Nagar has begun. Chennai Corporation workers were seen using an excavator to dig a trench on Mambalam High Road on Feb. 14. The subway, which will be 100 metres long, will be built at a cost of Rs. 1.4 crores. FREE

Gold appraiser held for fraud Police on Feb. 8 arrested Venkat Narayana Rao (resident of Nesapakkam, K. K. Nagar and employed as gold appraiser in a private bank in Koyambedu) for conniving with a bank customer and issuing false valuation to the bank for issue of loan worth Rs. 52 lakhs against fake gold jewellery last year. The incident came to light a fortnight ago during a routine gold loan audit at the branch when the said gold was also physically examined and found to be fake. On going through the records, the officials found that the appraisal was done by Venkat. Based on the complaint lodged by the bank, Koyambedu police interrogated Venkat who confessed to the crime. According to the police, Venkat colluded with his friend Mathiazhagan of Ramapuram in pledging the fake jewellery and cheating the bank. The two then split the money. Police are on the lookout for Mathialagan who is absconding. Man carries lamp on head An old man was seen walking along Reddy Kuppam Road (West Mambalam) carrying a Petromax lantern hung from a 3-foot high stand on his head at 2 p.m on Feb. 13. He told this reporter that he had taken the lantern to get it repaired at a nearby shop and was taking it back home. He said that it is used in wedding functions conducted at night, usually by North Indians. 5 February 16-22, 2013 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 46 Murugadasa (Muthuswami Iyer) made Venugaanam which was scripted by that neglected genius of Indian cinema, K. Ramnoth. The well-known Gemini Studio screenwriter, Ki. Ra ( K. Ramachandran) wrote the dialogues while the lyrics were by Kamabadasan, the Sri Lankan Tamil poet who was active in Tamil cinema in the bygone decades. G. Govindarajulu Naidu, a noted film music composer of that day, scored the music. Venugaanam had in its cast, besides Satagopan and N. C. Vasanthakokilam, noted artistes like K. Sarangapani, Kulathu Mani, A. Sakunthala (later Mrs. P. U. Chinnappa), S. M. Subbaiah and M. V. Mani. It was made at the Central Studios, Coimbatore which played a significant role in the history of Indian cinema This film too did not help its hero because NCV received more prominence than Satagopan! The most successful film for Satagopan was Madanakamarajan (1941). Produced by Dindigul Amritham Talkies at Gemini Studios and bankrolled by S. S. Vasan, it was the first Tamil film to be made in that studio. It was a folk tale written by B. S. Ramaiah, the noted writer and playwright of his day, and was directed by B. N. Rao. It had a fine cast with Satagopan as the hero and M. V. Rajamma, K. L. V. Vasantha, M.R. Swaminathan, T. S. Durairaj, M. S. Sundari Bai, Kothamangalam Subbu and others. The film was a solid hit and enjoyed three-month-long runs at many places. One song by Satagopan in Mohanam raagam Prema, Prema, Nee Illaamal Uranguvathengey...! became a hit. Indeed this song was the only hit in Satagopan s film career! While Madanakamarajan was being shot, Vasan produced his first Telugu film Jeevan Mukthi in which Satagopan was cast as Lord Vishnu. But he did not sing in this movie. A remake of the Tamil film hit, K. Subramanyam s Bhaktha Chetha (1940), the Telugu film flopped and was not screened at many places. Indeed Vasan liked to forget this film! Later Satagopan left movies and went back to his musical career in which he fared better. He also taught music in colleges. He relocated himself in Delhi where he lived for some years. He later wrote and set to music songs for children. Sadly his family life ran into problems and he walked out of a train one day at a junction in Andhra Pradesh and was never seen again. Indeed he has not been heard till today. Where is he? No one seems to know. And it is all shrouded in mystery Very sad indeed. ******* M. L. Vasanthakumari One of the earliest behind-the-screen voice-lending female play-back singers of South Indian cinema, a top-ranking classical Carnatic musician who created her own characteristic style or baani of singing (a baani which still blooms in every raga in her disciples like Sudha Raghunathan), M. L. Vasanthakumari was equally at home in singing a heavy ragabased movie song and a light, zippy nippy Hindi-movie or Western music-based tune. Her inimitable voice was not only melodious but also highly malleable and ductile. Such a musician par excellence was a brilliant disciple of the legend that still lives, G. N. Balasubramaniam (GNB). She enjoyed a successful innings as a playback singer in Tamil cinema for over a decade during the s. Many of her film songs became hits and are heard, remembered, sung and hummed by many to this day. The galaxy of MLV s glittering movie-song-gems is large and some of them are Gopalanodu naan aaduven ( Vaazhkai, 1949), Kannan mananilayai ( Ezhai Padum Paadu, 1950), Aahaha vaazhviley (Manthirikumari, 1950), Ayya saami aavojee saami ( Oar Iravu 1951, one of MLV s most popular songs based on the film music maestro C. Ramchandra s hit song Gorey...gorey... in the Hindi movie Samaadhi ), Ellaam inba mayam ( Manamagal,1951, a duet with P. Leela, an immortal melody of Tamil cinema), Chinnanchiru kiliye Kannamma ( Manamagal, 1951, a famous song written by the Rebel Poet of India, Mahakavi Subramania Bharathiyar, duet with singing stage and screen actor of yester-decades, V. N. Sundaram), Konjum puraavey ( Thaai Ullam, 1952), Aadal kaaneero ( Madurai Veeran, 1956), Ranga, Ranga, Ranga, manamohana ( Mamiyar Mechhiya Marumagal, 1959) and Aadaatha manamum vundo (Mannaathi Mannan, 1960). Most of these songs had a classical Carnatic music raga as the base, thus contributing to their immortality.
