According to its librarians S. Murugan and K. Dheenadayalan, there are nearly 2 lakh books in the library. It has more than 15,000 members and nearly 400 books are lent out everyday. Apart from books, 10 daily newspapers in English and Tamil and 50 weekly magazines are also available for reading in the library. The membership fee is Rs. 10 per year and members can take 3 books at a time. 3 November 24-30, 2012 Census on domestic animals completed As part of the 19 th livestock census, Chennai Corporation, with the help of self-help Kumbabhishekam in Muthu Mariamman temple on Monday Kumbabhishekam will be performed in Sakthi Muthu Mariamman Temple (South Boag Road, T. Nagar) at 9 a.m on Monday, Nov 26. In preparation for the event, special homams will be conducted at 7.30 a.m from Saturday, Nov 24. Kaala yaga pooja and cow pooja will be conducted a 6 p.m on Saturday and Sunday. The census, which forms part of the five-yearly All India Livestock Census 2012, is funded by the government of India. Enumerators have collected information related to cows, buffaloes, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, donkeys, dogs and rabbits. Tibetan students protest demanding freedom from China The leaning trunk of a dead tree near the pavement at the junction of Mambalam High Road and Coats Road (T. 4 Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES November 24-30, 2012 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 36 MSS and Shantha Apte sang many songs in Savithri but only the songs of MSS came in for attention. The most popular of them all was Manamey Kanamum&. This song is being sung to this day by classical Carnatic musicians in their concerts. In spite of MSS, Shantha Apte, Y. V. Rao and all, Savithri was not a box-office success. Then came another South Indian film musical classic, Meera (1945), produced by Chandraprabha Cinetone and directed by Ellis R. Dungan. With MSS in the lead role, others in the cast were Chittoor V. Nagaiah as King Rana, (Meera s husband), K. R. Chellam, K.Sarangapani, T. S. Balaiah, Serukalathur Sama, T. S. Durairaj, Appa K. Duraiswami, Baby Radha (MSS s step-daughter, now Radha Viswanathan), Baby Kamala, and, in a minor role lost behind a white bushy beard, turban and all, M. G. Ramachandran! Lyrics were by Papanasam Sivan. S. V. Venkataraman was the music director and Thuraiyur Rajagopala Sarma also worked in the music department. Meera was a musical feast with MSS singing almost all the songs. Some of the songs like Kaatriniley Varum Geetham (the most famous of them all) were copied from songs by the famous Bengali singer Juthika Roy whose gramophone records were very popular in South India in those years. Not many are aware that Meera was launched in 1943 and N. S. Krishnan -T. A. Mathuram were to have acted in it. But with NSK s arrest in December, 1944 in the sensational Lakshmikantham Murder Case, he could not work in the film. Instead T.S. Durairaj played a minor role in the film but he created a poor impression. Meera was also made in Hindi and with it MSS became a national celebrity. The film had an on-screen introduction by the noted politician and poet, Sarojini Naidu who described MSS as the Nightingale of India. The film was seen by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the Mountbattens and other leaders who became her ardent fans and friends. After Meera, MSS chose to bid goodbye to movies and devote herself to Carnatic music and social service through her music. Warmly human and child-like in her simplicity, MSS was a rare human being with a sense of humility rarely seen in celebrities of today who are mostly ego and arrogance personified. More than 50 years later, Government of India bestowed on her the highest civilian title Bharat Ratna. None deserved it more than MSS! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Movies and Musicians - Early Cinematic Goof Ups... Anachronism has been defined as an error in chronology, especially a chronological misplacing of people, events, objects or customs which make it all so grossly or ridiculously out of place or context. Many creative persons have been guilty of such anachronisms, not excluding the great William Shakespeare. In a play based on Greek mythology he has Hector, a mythical hero, quote the human being and celebrated genius Aristotle! Critics took Shakespeare to task and questioned his merits as a playwright. Such anachronisms occurred often in Tamil Cinema in its early years during the 1930s, especially in its music, or more precisely, songs. Interestingly, it was a legacy from the theater where nobody cared - neither the playwright, producers, nor audiences. A few examples need narrating... In a popular play Bhaktha Dhruva, written by Chidambara Bhagavathar, better known as Thammudu Bhagavathar, the boy Dhruva plays with his playmates and all of them sing a song in chorus: Tennis..football adithu Rounders plays vilayaduvom! Tiffin konjam edukka Tea, coffee parthiduvom! Tennis&.football... tiffin...tea& coffee&. in a mythological play about Dhruva, Lord Vishnu and all? Well, that s an anachronism but the song was a hit and usually sung on stage by the ace comedian and latter-day superstar of Tamil Cinema and cult figure, N. S. Krishnan when he was still a drama actor in his teens. The song was greeted with loud cheers and enthusiastic shouts of Once more! Surely those were the days! LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Traffic signal needed at Bazullah Road-North Usman Road junction Sir, There is heavy traffic at the junction of Bazullah Road and North Usman Road during peak hours from 8.30 a.m to a.m and from 4.30 p.m to 7.30 p.m. There are a couple of schools in the vicinity and part of the peak time coincides with the school opening and closing hours. Since there is no traffic signal at the junction, pedestrians, especially school children and elderly persons, find it difficult and hazardous to cross the road. I request the traffic officials to survey the traffic pattern at the junction and install a traffic signal for the benefit of pedestrians. This will also help in regulating the traffic.-l. Waste dump yard in Valluvarkottam irksome to residents Sir, The waste transshipment yard of Chennai Corporation managed by Ramkay Enviro Engrs (which handles conservancy services in Corporation Zone 8) in Valluvarkottam emits foul smell throughout the day over a wide area making life difficult for residents of Saradambal Street and Balaji Avenue. The cranes and bulldozers employed in accumulating and transporting the garbage produces an irritating high decibel noise throughout the day. The area outside the yard is not cleaned and is often strewn will garbage and muck that falls out of the transport trucks. There are 5 schools nearby and it is a common sight to see parents holding their children with one hand and the other covering their nostrils. I request the authorities to shift the yard to outside of city limits and out of bounds of residential colonies. The present yard maybe converted into a bus stand.- S.
