According to the announcement made by M. R. Vijayabhaskar (Transport Minister), this policy will help to hold drivers accountable in case of road rule violations and accidents. He said that it will cut down on accidents and effectively bring traffic rule offenders to book. He added that the decision was necessitated because many drivers produced photo copies of driving licenses after their original licenses had been suspended. FREE

The photo was taken by this Reporter on Aug. 25. Metrowater has dug a long trench on one side of Anna Main Road, K. K. Nagar to carry out some repair work. There are no barricades or sign boards to caution motorists about the open trench. The trench is not visible in the dark and poses a danger to motorists, especially 2-wheeler riders who may drive into the trench and injure themselves. Will Metrowater officials take action to caution road users at least at night when no work is in progress. 4 Page 4 Over 100 large Vinayaga idols in neighbourhood 12 commercial buildings in T. Nagar get notice for illegal use of power TANGEDCO has issued notices to owners of 12 commercial buildings in T. Nagar for having unauthorised power connections. After the major fire incident in Chennai Silks showroom in May, TANGEDCO s enforcement wing led by an ADGP conducted an inspection of high rise commercial buildings in the shopping hub of T. Nagar. According to a senior official, the dept. received records from CMDA on various buildings in T. Nagar and found that 12 of them have built additional floors beyond the permitted limit. Since the Electricity Act says that power connection to floors which are illegal is treated as unauthorised, notices have been served on the owners of these complexes. He said that they have been given two months to respond to the notices. 5 Police nab pickpocket, seize gold, cash T. Nagar police on Aug. 19 arrested a 38-year-old pickpocket in connection with several cases of theft in the city. Twelve sovereigns worth Rs lakhs and Rs. 4 lakhs in cash were seized from him. Police identified the man as Jeeva of Vellore. According to the police, on interrogation, the man confessed that he teamed up with his wife and sister to commit the thefts. Jeeva was picked up in Ashok Nagar during a routine check. Police said Jeeva was residing in a rented room in Sholinganallur with his wife and sister. The trio operated in buses, trains and other crowded areas and used a range of attentiondiversion tactics. After stealing enough valuables, they would visit Vellore at least once a month to dispose of their loot and lie low for a while, he added. Police have launched a search for Jeeva s wife and sister who are still at large. Ph: , , mambalamtimes@yahoo.co.in Web: LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Barricades hamper pedestrians in service lane Sir, When the authorities were demolishing Chennai Silks building after the fire, to prevent any untoward incidents, the area around Chennai Silks was barricaded, including the pedestrian pavement on the eastern-side service lane of Usman Road, T. Nagar. Even after the work has been completed and the debris cleared, the barricade placed in line on the pavement has not been removed. As a result, the whole length of the pavement is not available for pedestrians. The service lane is already narrow and, with the barricade and surging crowd, it becomes difficult to walk. To add to the problems, the shop owners are also encroaching on the already narrowed pavement causing further obstruction to pedestrians. The Corporation officials should take immediate steps to remove the barricades and prevent shop owners from encroaching on the pavement. K. Harihar, T. Nagar Civic problems in Lakshmi Street Sir, Lakshmi Street, West Mambalam, which connects Lake View Road with Ellaiamman Koil Street, is being misused by nefarious elements at night. Empty liquor bottles and plastic cups can often be found on the road near its junction with Pushpavathi Ammal Street. The junction has been converted into an open urinal by passers-by. It is unhygienic and causes an offensive smell throughout the day. Apart from that, piling up of debris and garbage paves the way for proliferation of mosquitoes which will surely be responsible for viral attacks like dengue and malaria among the residents. I appeal to Corporation officials to inspect the street and take the necessary action for the benefit of the residents. R. Lakshmi, Chari Street, West Mambalam Pavements misused for storing building material Sir, I am a resident of Chari Street, T. Nagar, which abuts Ramakrishna Street and Vivekananda Street. The police booth on Ramakrishna Street, near its junction with Vivekananda Street, is not effective. Under the very eyes of the police, the pavement near the booth is misused for storing building material like sand and bricks. On the opposite side, long casuarina poles are heaped against the compound wall of a building. Since the last few days, a cow has been tied to a tree near the spot. It is not only dirtying the surrounding, but its persistent mooing is causing a big nuisance to the nearby residents. Similarly, debris has been lying for several months on the pavement outside TVS Apartments on Chari Street. Will the officials concerned take immediate action to remove the encroachments? D. Nagar garlanded the body of a 37-year-old man during the funeral rites in their home in T. Nagar, they were shocked when policemen arrived and took the body away for postmortem. According to a police official, the family had lied to doctors about the cause of the man s fatal injuries which were sustained in a road accident. The victim, Deenadhayalan, met with an accident on Aug. 12, while riding on his bike with his wife Anitha and their 3-yearold daughter. According to eyewitnesses, Deenadhayalan lost control of his bike when he tried to avoid hitting a dog that suddenly crossed his path. The front wheel of the bike hit the pavement and all the three fell down. While his wife and daughter escaped with minor injuries, Deenadhayalan hit his head against a stone. He recovered immediately and reached home. Sometime later he complained of severe headache and lost consciousness. He was rushed to a private hospital where doctors pronounced him brain died and advised the family to take him to Rajiv Gandhi Govt. Hospital. At the govt. hospital, they told the doctors that Deenadhayalan had lapsed into an unconscious state after falling down at home. He passed away in the hospital on Aug. 17. The hospital handed over the body to Deenadhayalan s family members and they made arrangements for the funeral, a police officer said. When Guindy Traffic Police checked at the hospital and learned that Deenadhayalan had died and no postmortem was performed, they went to his house in T. Nagar, where the funeral rites were in progress, and took the body away for postmortem amidst protests by the family members. Sai bhajan programs in T. OBITUARY K. S. MALLIKARJUNA BHAGAVATHAR K. S. Mallikarjuna Bhagavathar (resident of Annai Jayashree Apartments, 22, Ramakrishnapuram 3 rd Street, West Mambalam) passed away on July 13. He was 82, and had been a resident of Mambalam for 15 years. He had written the book Sampradhaaya Bhajan, which is to be released shortly. He also conducted bhajan classes at home. He had received a number of awards including Bhagavatha Ratna award from Swami Haridhoss Giri, Bhagavatha Mahodaya award from Premi Anna and Sankeerthana Kalanidhi award from Bhagavatha Seva Trust. He is survived by his wife Bhagirithi Mallikarjunan, daughter Aparna Ganesan, son-in-law Melattur Ganesh Bhagavathar, son M. Venkataraghavan and grandchildren. V. K. RAGHUPATHY V. K. Nagar, took up the task of transforming an unused public space opposite Alandur Metro Rail Station, close to the subway and adjoining the pavement, to depict Fort St. George and its capture by the French in They made caricatures on the ground and used a vertical mirror to create an optical illusion of the event. They got permission from the officials concerned to undertake the project. A competition by National Association for Students of Architecture (NASA), which asked students to take up an abandoned urban space and transform it into a space ideal for a gathering, inspired these students to take up the initiative. Construction material and other debris are dumped by Chennai Metro Rail Limited in the 120-sq. meter space. The three students cleared part of the land to create an illusion of the historical event. Amrutha told Mambalam Times that the planning had started in the 1 st week of June and the project was completed on Aug. 19. They utilized around 30 sq. meters of horizontal space to depict the event. They used casuarina poles, colour cloth and other recyclable material to make the caricature resembling the Fort and two trenches, one depicting armed French soldiers entering the city from the sea and the other showing British soldiers protecting the Fort. They then erected a huge vertical mirror to reflect the caricatures made by them on the ground. Passersby could simply sit or lie down in front of the mirror to view Fort St. George and the soldiers. We raised Rs. 40,000 for cleaning, levelling and purchasing materials, said Amrutha. They had permission to display the project for three days and it was dismantled on Aug. 22.
