4 Page 4 MAMBALAM TIMES: Ashok Nagar - K.K.Nagar Edition July 17-23, 2016 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 16 Madurai Muthaiah Dhandapani Desikar was born on August 27, 1908 in a small village Tiruchenkattakudi, famous as the birth-place of the renowned saint and one of the Nayanmaars, Siruthonda Nayanar. In this village there is an ancient Shiva temple and it had many devotional singers since many centuries known as Odhuvaars. Desikar s grandfather Murugayya Desikar was a popular odhuvar and his son Muthaiah was also a much sought after odhuvar. In the late 19th century Muthaiah created history by being invited to what was then known as Federated Malay States (FMS, later it separated into Malaysia and Singapore). He was so popular in that country that he made many visits and, sadly, during one of those visits he passed away-fromhome, in Malaya& (This writer had the pleasure of knowing Dhandapani Desikar intimately and had spent many delightful hours with him and his second wife M. S. Devasena. She was active in Tamil films for some years and played the heroine in many of his films. Desikar was very humorous and was an interesting conversationalist. Some of the anecdotes and jokes he had told this writer cannot be put in print even in this permissive age!) Even as a lad Dhandapani Desikar had his characteristic melodious voice and, with the ambience at home and the surroundings of the temple, it is not surprising that he began to sing the various religious hymns sung by his father. Noticing the interest and the talent in the boy, the father initiated him into training as odhuvar. The obedient lad picked up fast, revealing the future oak in the tiny acorn. To give him grounding in classical music his father sent him to be the disciple of Sattayappa, a nagaswaram expert of the local temple. After some time with him, Desikar wanted to undertake the study of Classical Carnatic music. But his father wanted him to be an odhuvar like himself. Soon his father sent him for intensive training to many gurus and, in the next few years, Desikar proved to be a good singer of devotional hymns with an excellent foundation of classical music. At the age of eleven he had his debut with a concert and he had to stand on a stool to enable the large crowd to have a glimpse of the diminutive Desikar! Invitations to sing in many temples in Thanjavur district began to come his way, but Desikar was not keen in following the traditional profession of his forefathers. He revealed his desire to a close relation who took him to Kumbakonam, then one of the centers of Classical Carnatic Music. Many top musicians lived in this famous temple town and here Desikar began to learn classical music at the feet of the celebrated violin maestro Kumbakonam Rajamanickam Pillai. When he was hardly eighteen he received an offer to move to Madurai, the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu of the day, where he got a job on a modest salary. The family was not so well off and Desikar wanted to make his own way in the world of music and not be a burden on the family. At Madurai he met many noted classical musicians from whom he imbibed more knowledge. They were immensely impressed by his abundant talent and predicted a great future awaiting him. Soon he began to sing at many festivals not only in Madurai but also in places like Nagapattinam and Madras. At the age of 20, he made his debut as a Classical Carnatic vocalist at a temple in Madurai. His performance won appreciation from the legends of music like Veena Dhanammal and Kanchipuram Naina Pillai. His rising popularity led to his marriage with Gnanambal which was celebrated with pomp and circumstance. Destiny took over the life of Desikarat at this juncture. While he was living in Madurai, one of the active persons in the early decades of Tamil Cinema, T. C. Vadivelu Naicker, a writer and also a Tamil filmmaker, met him with an offer that Desikar could not refuse. The well-known Madras-based movie company Vel Pictures was then launching Pattinathar, the story of the noble saint of Thiruvetriyur near Madras. Vadivelu Naicker was working on the movie as writer and he brought Desikar to Madras to play the lead role in it on a monthly salary of one thousand rupees. Thus Desikar landed in Madras where he would live for the rest of his life... According to an official, at the time of collecting fine, the registration number and vehicle details are entered and saved in the database with the new machine. 5 July 17-23, 2016 I am an organ donor sticker pasted on motorcycle By Our Staff Reporter A 2-wheeler owner has pasted a sticker with the message Make use of my body parts after my end on the rear bumper of his motorcycle to announce that he is an organ donor. Appeal for restoration of 2-way traffic at Ashok Pillar At the Ashok Pillar junction, crossing the road is fraught with danger for pedestrians and cyclists. At the junction, a two way traffic system was in place, which was converted to a one-way system on account of Metro Rail construction. Traffic police officials promised to restore the two-way traffic system, but failed to do so even after the project was completed, say residents. Though the junction has a pedestrian crossing, vehicles don t wait for people to cross. Also, no traffic policeman is available at the junction to assist pedestrians even during rush hour. This arrangement does not affect only the residents of Ashok Nagar, but also residents of West Mambalam, Jafferkhanpet and K.K. Nagar. None of the utilities that have been created for pedestrians are pedestrian-friendly. There are large metal posts on the road which make it very difficult for people to see the incoming traffic while crossing. At the 15th Avenue crossing, people have to run to cross the road. This is just an example of the bad state of traffic engineering in the city, said V. Ravichandran, president, Citizens Guardians. Following a series of com-plaints from the residents of Ashok Nagar, police officials restored the two-way traffic near the pillar in But the relief was temporary. A year later, the traffic police again introduced the one-way system citing Metro Rail project. On one half of the road, vehicles coming from Vadapalani stop so that pedestrians can cross the stretch. But those on the other half going towards 11th Avenue don t bother to stop even if the signal turns red. Also, taking a roundabout route to reach Uthayam Theater is a waste of time and fuel. This is an inconvenience in every sense of the term, said Jainulabdeen, a resident of Ashok Nagar for the past 20 years. On the other hand, traffic personnel say that the two-way traffic can be restored only if the ongoing flyover construc-tion near the Vadapalani signal is completed. The traffic headed towards Vadapalani can be regulated only if Ashok Pillar junction is made one-way, till the flyover is completed, said a traffic police official from Ashok Nagar. Nagar has remained locked for over two months. It was useful to persons visiting the playground behind it and to devotees who visit a popular temple close by. I am an athlete and spend 3 hours a day practicing in the playground. As the toilet is locked, in times of need, I am forced cross the road and go to the toilet inside Natesan Park said a lady. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Sir, I am a practising Chartered Accountant and have been living with my family in Baroda Street, West Mambalam for the past 60 years. Three years back the house next door was purchased by Lalitha Jewellery. After prolonged renovation, the new building is being used as a hostel for around 140 of its employees. We are facing several problems because of the nuisance created by the inmates of the hostel. They throw garbage, cigarette butts, empty cigarette packets and plastic into our compound thereby dirtying our premises. We are unable to open our windows due to the loss of privacy. Ladies of the house find it uncomfortable to go to the terrace to tend to the garden or hang clothes as there is always an audience of 2 or more men from the hostel who sit on the parapet wall and smoke and sing songs. To add to the problems, several taps have been fixed on the terrace of the hostel where the men bathe in the open. Page 7 Hostels in Baroda Street hinder residents With 140 persons occupying a house, the water table in the area is going to drop drastically and there is going to be heavy strain on the sewerage system. Another building opposite Classic Apartments on our road is occupied by the employees of Kumaran Stores. Similar problems are being faced by the neighbours there as well. They also dump empty liquor bottles in the street corner. It is sad that in a purely residential area like Baroda Street, a number of houses are being converted into private hostels by shop owners. They are acquiring independent houses and converting them into cheap housing for their staff. It is high time the authorities stepped in and took action to prevent the conversion of houses in residential areas into hostels. There are a few long standing civic issues in the street. The garbage bin kept on the roadside is broken and needs to be replaced. As the wheels are damaged, Corporation workers find difficulty in moving it and transferring the garbage to the lorry and, in the process, spill most of it. This accumulates on the road leading to an unhygienic condition. The street name board at one end of the road is leaning and is likely to topple over as its foundation has been damaged by the roots of a tree adjacent to it. Nagar sought the Association s help in restoring his LPG subsidy after he inadvertently selected the option 5 to quit subsidy while booking a refill. When our member approached the gas agency with the issue, he was advised to write a letter indicating the oversight during booking the refill to restore the subsidy. His subsidy has since been number TN02/AD1423 has been lying abandoned on the road margin for several years. I appeal to the Corporation officials to look into these complaints and take suitable action at the earliest for the benefit of the residents.
