Nagar) has been pre- sented Lions Club International s Best Social Service award for her Education through travel program. The award was presented by Dr. G. Manilal (Vice-Chairman, Lions International Multiple Council). She is an Educational Travel Evangelist focusing on a new medium of Education through travel which presents a myriad of options for young minds. She founded Space Kidz India to propagate this new medium of education. A Tourism Management student of Alagappa University, she was among 1000 women entrepreneurs in the world chosen by Goldman Sachs to pursue management training in Indian School of Business in September Through Space Kidz India she manifests her thoughts on travel and culture. Srimathy conceived this idea to create a platform for Indian students to explore the pinnacle of space education (NASA). Through this program she was able to motivate 850 young inquisitive minds on a life changing journey. Started as an idea for kids, this concept also became an opportunity for industry partners like airlines, travel companies in the US and local restaurants. The State of Florida also recognized this as an income generating model. The US Commercial Service, Washington DC, appreciated this unique work by presenting a merit certificate. Recently, Space Kidz India partnered with a pilot training school (Phoenix East Aviation) in Florida (USA) to provide a launch pad for young Indian aviators, the first Indian entity to offer this unique training program. Space Kidz India embarked on a unique mission to find future scientists in schools in Tamilnadu. This competition brought scientists, scholars and educationalists under one roof with a common objective - to select the Young Scientist. Boston Hill Community College extended a scholarship for the winner and runners-up along with a robotics workshop in MIT and visit to Harvard. Space Kidz India partnered with The Hindu and Hindustan University to continue the search in a broader area for the Young Scientist of South India in February The winner got to attend a space camp in NASA and flying experience in Phoenix East Aviation School. Nagar) to make way for an ambulance caught in pedestrian crowds for more than 20 minutes while trying to reach a shopper who had suffered a severe heart attack at around p.m on Aug. 27. A doctor who had come in the ambulance managed to stabilize the patient s condition and he was rushed to a nearby hospital. Old lamp post poses danger Book on Dravidian culture released Chennai Arts & Literary Council (VGP Complex, 1st Avenue, Ashok Nagar) released a book Liberate India authored by Prof. Dr. Raja Marthandan in a function held in Hindustan International School, Guindy on Aug. 21. The book, priced at Rs. 600, is on Dravidian culture and its development in ancient India. The book was released by S. Ramanathan scored music for three films during 1952which included two featuring the legendary icon and first superstar of South Indian Cinema, M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. They were Amarakavi and Shyamala.. Bhagavathar had earlier suffered imprisonment for thirty months because of his alleged involvement in the sensational Lakshmikantham Murder Case. He, along with the comedy icon of Tamil Cinema, N. S. Krishnan, went to prison and suffered untold anguish and pain even though they were not involved in the killing of the blackmailing journalist C. N. Lakshmikantham. After his release from prison, regrettably, Bhagavathar did not succeed in staging a comeback and the films he made or acted in did not meet with success. His first film after release was Raja Mukthi (the title itself suggests the salvation of the Raja of cinema but that did not happen.)he lost heavily in the production, which was his own. Some songs were melodious but that did not help. The next film Amarakavi (1952) was done under the banner of Nagoor Cine Productions.F. Nagoor (the brilliant art director of South Indian Cinemaand one of the founders of celebrated Newtone Studios in the Kilpauk area of Madras City) was persuaded by Bhagavathar to bring in the finance besides his own money and other kinds of support, and Nagoor was able to promote the studio along with his friends - talented audiographer DinshawK. Tehrani and camera maestro Jiten Bannerjee. Amarakavi was written by the noted writer Suradha and the lyrics were by A. Marudhakasi. G. Ramanathan,composed the music along with T.A. Kalyanam who was fairly active as a music composer in that period. The film had, besides Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, the dream girl of South Indian Cinema, T. R. Rajakumari, B. S. Saroja, the inimitable comedy pair N. S. Krishnan - T. A. Mathuram, M. G. Chakrapani, P. K. Saraswathiand K. A. Thangavelu who was fast making a name as comedian. In this movie, one song Sedi maraiviley oru poongodi is sung twice, once by Bhagavathar as soloand again as a duet with P. Leela. This song has a captivating melody and was excellently rendered as usual by Bhagavathar. However, the movie did not do well and flopped much to the regret of many of Bhagavathar s fans. There were some rumours that the thirty month sojourn in prison had affected Bhagavathar s voice but his singing in the movies he made after he came out of the prison does not reveal any such change or defect. His voice continued to be the same as before but, for some unknown and puzzling reasons, the films did not do as well as before. Some felt that trends in Tamil Cinema had changed after 1952 with the entry of Sivaji Ganesan and the cult film Parasakthi. Soon thereafter began the age of MGR, Gemini GanesanS. S. Rajendran and others, and Bhagavathar was no longer in fashion as somebody remarked. His life later was full of tragedy. The other film of 1952 was Shyamala in which Bhagavathar played the lead role and was paired with the multilingual singing star S. Varalakshmi. This film was produced by Yuva Productions and was also made in Telugu under the odd sounding title Tingu Ranga. The producer was P. S. Seshachalam with his wife Veenavathi playing a major role. Besides Bhagavathar and Varalakshmi, the film had the star comedian and icon of Telugu Cinema, Relangi, and a pretty Telugu actress Ashalatha. The film was written and directed by B. A. Subba Rao who made mostly Telugu films, while the Tamil dialogues were written by Kambadasan. Along with G. Ramanathan, T. V. Raju, a popular Telugu film music director also worked in the movie while the lyrics were by Kambadasan and C. S. Natarajasundaram (very little is known about him today.) Bhagavathar sang a few songs and one of which, Jeeva priyey Shyamala became popular.however, the film did not do well and flopped at the box office. Workshop on digital film making conducted By Our Staff Reporter Dr. Vajchra Raj (MD, Sivas Studios and resident of 11 th Avenue, Ashok Nagar) conducted a 2-day digital film making workshop Call your shots for students and amateur film makers on Aug. 25 and 26. He also signed an MOU with Hindustan College of Arts and Science for conducting regular crash courses on digital film making for Visual Communication students of the college. His book on digital film making was released on the occasion. Dr. Raj s studio is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment which was demonstrated in the workshop. After completing MBBS, Raj decided to pursue a career in filmmaking and completed his post-graduation in Film direction and production in New York Film Academy and Hollywood Film Institute. Its senior member Ranganatha Chakravarthy is a passionate scrabbler. He has been playing competitive scrabble since the first tournament held at Anna University in He has represented India in two world championships, and has won several open national championships and a couple of international championships. He said that the game develops spelling accuracy, vocabulary building, arithme- tic, team work and mental maths. He, along with other the members of the association, is willing to promote the game in schools by conducting free workshops. He said that the World Youth Scrabble Championship is being held in Sri Lanka later this month but not a single youth from Tamilnadu is representing the country. Aug.25 to Sept. 8 is being observed National Eye Donation Fortnight. She said that 2.5 lakh corneas are needed annually to treat corneal blindness but only 25,000 corneas are currently being harvested. The students were shocked to hear that India has the largest number of blind people in the world today, especially caused by corneal problems. All the students took a pledge to donate their eyes. The session was interactive with students asking many questions. The importance of using protective eye wear to avoid eye injuries during sports and bursting of crackers was highlighted and demonstrated. Kutti Ganesan (Founder General Secretary, Vinayagar Chathurthi Vizhakuzh) has installed a 600 kg Vinayagar idol made of organic materials outside JYM Kalyana Mandapam (Venkatanarayana Road, T. Nagar). This idol has been made with a mixture of jaggery, cashew, elaichi and other ingredients. It took 10 persons 15 days to complete it. Ganesan said that the use of organic materials ensures that no harm is caused to aquatic animals after immersion. There will be Annadhanam on Sept. 5 and immersion will take place on Sept. 7. He said that every year many residents dump Vinayakar idols near temples and on pavements instead of immersing them. Due to religious sentiments, conservancy workers do not clear them along with regular garbage. Ganesan said LIC launches low premium budget plan Life Insurance Corporation of India launched a low premium budget plan Jeevan Rakshak last week. The life of anyone aged between 8 and 55 can be insured under this plan. The minimum sum assured is Rs.75,000 and the maximum is Rs. 2,00,000. The yearly premium for Rs. 2,00,000 sum assured is very low, ranging from Rs. 6,793 to Rs. 18,656 depending upon the proposer s age and premium paying term. For the convenience of the proposer, premium paying term ranging from 10 to 20 years is also available. According to an official, under this plan the premium is around 30% lesser than ordinary endowment type of policies. It has been introduced for the benefit of the common man from all walks of life. On maturity, sum assured plus loyalty addition, if any, will be paid. Short-circuit causes fire in house There was no casualty in the fire accident caused by an electrical short circuit in a residential house located in 8/31, Vasudevan Nagar, West Mambalam on Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. Fire personnel attached to T. Nagar Fire & Rescue Station led by R. Ravichandran (Station Fire Officer) rushed to the spot on being alerted and brought the fire under control before it could spread to adjacent houses. Most of the furniture and other flammable items in the house were destroyed in the fire. Till the fire personnel arrived, the inmates and neighbours tried to douse the fire by throwing water from buckets and pots. Multimedia presentation on Chenda Melam Renowned violinist M. Lalitha (a resident of Mambalam) gave a thematic multimedia presentation on Chenda Melam on Aug. 29 in Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (Mylapore). It is part of a series of presentations she is giving on Musical Instruments in Divinity each month. The presentations are funded under the Production Grant (Ministry of Culture, Government of India). The instruments featured so far include veena, flute, gethu vadyam and mridangam. For each presentation, she does extensive research and study on the history, evolution, mythological significance and sculptural evidence of the instrument including its usage in rituals and references in literature and musical compositions. It is the 6 th edition of the festival and will showcase feature films that portray issues pertaining to mental health and illness. The theme this year is Leading Fulfilling life with Mental Illness. Each film screening will be followed by an interactive session with a panel consisting of a psychiatrist and a media personality. SCARF will screen about 50 entries of short films made by amateur directors, students and others. 20 of them have been short-listed for the competition section for the best three films which will be selected by an eminent jury. Sundaram Finance will sponsor the cash awards for the winning directors which will be presented by P.C. Sreeram (leading cinematographer). On Aug. 31, at 6 p.m, Mohan Raman (film historian) will talk on Maname Nee Nalamaa- Celluloid Parvaiyil, a chronicle of mental health depictions in Tamil cinema. The two main objectives of the festival are to improve awareness about mental health and beat the stigma attached to mental disorders and to stimulate and promote interest on mental health issues among film makers. There is no entry free. All are welcome. Session tomorrow on public speaking Toastmasters International has organized a session on How to speak fearlessly in front of an audience at 10 a.m on Sunday, Aug. 31 in Anova Corporate Services,11th Avenue, Ashok Nagar. Anybody older than 18 can attend the session. The entry fee is Rs.100. There will be regular sessions on Sundays. More details can be had from Sudha Rajesh Minor accident at busy junction Two motorists, one of them a woman, were involved in a minor accident which created traffic congestion at Thambiah Road-Srinivasa Street junction in West Mambalam at 4 p.m on Aug. 28. While the woman sustained a slight injury, the other was hurt in the head and rushed by pedestrians to a nearby hospital for first aid. Young musicians invited to Marghazhi Vizha Naalaiya Sigarangal (an association which works to promote upcoming musicians) will conduct a number of Carnatic music events for those in the age group during this year s Marghazhi Thiruvizha.
