For appointments, contact PHC in Doctor from Mambalam performs rare heart surgery in Australia Dr. Anand Iyer Padmanabhan, born and brought up in Mambalam, is working as a heart surgeon in Townsville Hospital, Australia. He recently conducted a very rare and tricky heart surgery to save a 66-year-old man who was brought to the hospital in a critical condition after a huge tree branch broke and fell on him. He was airlifted to Townsville Hospital for emergency surgery. When Dr. Anand opened the sac of his heart, he noticed excessive bleeding and none of the inner organs were visible to assess the extent of damage. He had to put the patient on a heart-lung machine through a bypass through the groin to get a better look at the damaged heart. When Anand noticed that the left sternum had been badly damaged, he had to use surgical precision to repair the tear to stop the bleeding. The surgery which normally takes couple of hours had to be completed within 30 minutes owing to the excess blood loss of the patient. Two of its wheels are damaged and the bin often falls over, strewing the area with garbage. Cattle, stray dogs and vermin have a field day rummaging through the garbage. During the minimal recent rains, the storm water drainage system failed and rainwater flooded the houses abutting the canal. There was no facility to drain the water as the canal itself was full and water remained stagnant for more than 3-days. Multiple attempts to get the Corporation to look into the matter have been futile.
