2 Page 2 CURRENT DISASTER RESPONSE UMCOR and our partners are responding to Hurricane Florence in the United States and Super Typhoon Mangkhut (Ompong) in the Philippines. Please join us in prayer for the areas affected and consider a gift to UMCOR Disaster Response. As we assess the impact of these storms, we will provide timely updates as we receive information. Hurricane Florence As of 8am on Sept. 20, UMCOR is pleased to report that conferences are as prepared as possible to respond to the damage caused by Hurricane Florence. We ask that those wishing to assist to please not self-deploy or donate unsolicited items. We anticipate additional updates related to Florence emergent needs and will provide such as we receive them. In North Carolina, Disaster Response Coordinators and Early Response Teams will assess damage in the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Florence later this week and into the weekend. However, some areas affected by Hurricanes Matthew and Irene were not affected by Hurricane Florence and are still in need of long-term recovery volunteers. Volunteers can express interest by ing disasterresponse@ncc.org, or calling North Carolina Disaster Response Page: In Western North Carolina, teams are also preparing to assess damage. Reports of flooded sewage systems are raising health concerns. Therefore, potential volunteers are asked to ensure all vaccinations are up to date. Western North Carolina Disaster Response Page: While South Carolina is not ready to receive volunteers, the conference asks that those interested monitor UMCSC.org for future requests. We will also provide information on how to volunteer on this page. South Carolina Disaster Response Page: Donations can be to your church designated for Hurricane Florence

Our music will be provided by the Royal DJ s, a special needs group. We will need candy for trick or treating that night. You are welcome to wear a costume, but please keep the costume in the non-violent side. Invite your friends. Come have fun. We will have hot dogs for sale though the dance is free. We are also having a day for a craft sale on November 3 from 10:00-2:00pm. We have invited the community of individuals with disabilities to come and sell their home made crafts. Another Vietnam Veteran is coming to sell Christmas wreaths. Of course, many of our very own Amigos will be here selling their homemade crafts. Please save the date, NOVEMBER 3, to support our friends. We will have food for sale as well. 4 Page 4 Around the globe, countless gifted and qualified people face financial obstacles that hinder them from preparing for the vocation God has given them, especially youth and young adults. For ethnic students who will be the first generation in their families to attend college, or for those people of color who haven t historically had access to resources that make higher education possible, the road toward education has often been unwieldy. What would it look like if the church today imitated Jesus affirmation of the full dignity and God-given potential of all women and men especially those who ve historically been assigned to the world s margins? On World Communion Sunday your giving helps to provide scholarships for national and international graduate students whom God has gifted to learn and to serve. Equipping Disciples Like Mary Grace to Serve in Jesus Name As a small child Mary Grace Galapon labored as a housemaid in exchange for food and clothing. Yet, allowed to attend church, she found hope. As a member of The United Methodist Church, your giving on World Communion Sunday has allowed this deaconess, of the Mindanao Philippines Annual Conference, to pursue an education that is now changing her community as she works to eliminate poverty. Mary Grace s work, and the impact of hundreds more like her, are possible because you give. Will You Equip World-Changers? Will you give generously on World Communion Sunday to make education and vocational impact possible for more students, like Mary Grace? Will you equip gifted and qualified students from around the globe to become the world-changers God created them to be? Nelson Mandela said, Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world. And because the people of The United Methodist Church believe that all of God s children have been created and gifted to build the kingdom Jesus ushered in, we re resourcing them to do just that. Because of your giving on World Communion Sunday, the most powerful tool to change the world is in more hands.

7 From Our IRONMEN Page Page 7 7 From Pastor Patti 5 things better men, better do Some praying. You can show up to church on any given Sunday, but someone who prays, well that guy acknowledges the Somebody outside of himself who is most able to help him navigate this. Do you feel lost? Ask God for direction. People who truly trust God can be found talking to him. Bible studying. Look, even if you attend a Sunday school class and get a small dose of Truth, you will still be challenged. It ain t enough that you listen to Pastor Patti go on about her understanding of the bible. Know, yourself! Spiritual Relationships. Don t attempt to do life alone! Encourage other men to do what will make for a positive impact on their spiritual lives and discourage that which will not. They are likely to return the favor. Small Grouping. Spiritual growth does not happen in isolation, it occurs in community. Join a small group! And don t be embarrassed about being a freshman with regard to this Jesus stuff. Even the Seniors have much to learn. Your own Ministry. You are not disqualified from this! Seek out a Service Project. Mentor someone. Have you met Josh, our new Youth Pastor. He is both, young and little and would dig getting good help. Your help is made good and better by the previous four things mentioned in this writing. Hoping to see you in Heaven, William. 8 Page 8 22 nd Annual United Methodist Women Auction October 24, 2018 To Expand Concepts of Mission Page 8 For the past 21 years, the United Methodist Women (UMW) of UMCPB has held their annual auction. We have received and auctioned off wonderful items donated by the church congregation. Questions for you: Do you know why the auction is held? Do you know where the money from the auction goes? I would guess most answers would be something like, It s a fundraiser for UMW events. They must give the money to somebody. The theme and purpose of this year s auction will be to answer these questions. We will be spotlighting the missions that are near and dear to the heart of this local UMW unit. You will have an opportunity to learn about each of the missions we support: Red Bird Mission C.R.O.S Ministries Missions sponsored by UMCPB Through the Roof Ministries Life s Changes Camperships for Warren Willis summer camp Camperships for UMCPB Fine Arts Camp and Vacation Bible School New this year: we will have an area set-up so that you can give directly to one (or more) of the missions spotlighted in a fun and unique way geared directly to that mission. We are still in needs of donations for the silent and live auctions. Aside from the missions we support as a local unit, we are also a member of the larger United Methodist Women that we make a pledge to each year. Part of the proceeds from the auction goes to fulfill this pledge. The United Methodist Women began in 1869 as the Woman s Foreign Missionary Society who first organized in Boston in response to a lack of women s healthcare in India. They started with 8 members. Today we are worldwide with 800,000 members. The purpose of United Methodist Women is: WHAT: Live & Silent Auction WHEN: WEDNESDAY, October 24th TIME: 5:30 8:00pm WHERE: Church Gathering Place United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. Please consider supporting this mission driven event by donating an auction item(s) or participating in the event itself. Donation forms can be found in this month s Herald on page 6 or on the tables in the back of the Gathering Place. Any questions please call the church office (561) or office@umcpb.org

11 Page Dear Friends, We had our first meeting of the Mission Coalition on Saturday, Sept. 8 th at the Ironmen and Real Women breakfast. I ve heard a lot of positive feedback regarding the meeting. For those who could not attend, the gist is to re-think the way we have been doing missions. The following section outlines what was discussed. If you were in attendance, you can either skip the next section or use it as a refresher. Also, feel free to forward this to the members of your particular mission. Part One: Why we do what we do. We took time to remember the why of our mission. Sometimes in our busyness, we lose sight of why we are in service and we just consider it another thing we have to do (or what ). The following link beautifully sums up the importance of keeping our focus on our why. Part Two: Re-thinking the way we do missions at UMCPB. The mission committee has almost exclusively focused on foreign missions. All of the great local missions have acted basically as an island unto themselves. Under the new model, ALL missions, local and foreign, will fall under the umbrella of missions. Additionally, we will collectively take ownership of ALL missions, not just the one(s) that we are serving on. This means that we help each other through prayer, coordinating events, and at times stepping in to help. Realizing that it is a rare person who longs to be on another committee, Pastor Patti, Joe Radonis (missions chair) and I met to determine a new format for missions. Joe coined the phrase Mission Coalition which we loved. Additionally, Patti had the idea of meeting on the second Saturday of the month and piggyback off the Ironmen and Real Women breakfast which begins at 8:00. Instead of a formal meeting, members of the Mission Coalition will get their breakfast and eat in the multi-purpose room (111/112) so as to not disturb their programming. As we sit around the tables enjoying our breakfast, we will simply dialogue about upcoming mission events. No reports, no roll call, no agenda, none of the trappings of a formal meeting. Instead, simple reports will be ed to Joe, Patti and myself. Unless necessary, they will not be covered during breakfast. They will simply serve as a reporting to the congregation through the church newsletter, or perhaps a periodic mission video update during worship. The goal is to be done with breakfast by 8:45 no later than 9:00. Part Three: Expanding the Vision. For the purpose of this discussion we lumped church missions into two simple catagories: those visible to our community, and those invisible to our community. UMCPB does an amazing job with missions and has great Kingdom impact through its efforts. In spite of that, we recognized that even our neighbors across the street have little to no idea what is happening here. We are great at the invisible missions (which are just as important!), but our community desperately needs to SEE the church in action. Patti has been saying for some time that money follows missions. I would like to add one word to that: money follows VISIBLE missions. I firmly believe that when our community sees a church living out their faith, that they will be attracted to it. But our visible missions need to be well thought out and something that resonates with the hearts of those in our community. This is in keeping with the words of Christ: (Continued on Page 12)

12 Page 12 (Mission Coalition Continued from page 11) 14 You are the light of the world like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. So here s what we re asking you to do. Before our next Mission Coalition breakfast on October 13 th, be thinking of things we could do that is visible to our community. One suggestion is to do a walk to raise funds for NC hurricane relief. We could invite community members to join us in the walk. The 3+ mile loop of Brandywine and Village takes about an hour to walk. Imagine getting the chance to meet and talk with folks from the community for an entire hour while raising money for hurricane victims. What a great opportunity to start building relationships! I m eager to hear your ideas. Finally, we have two big mission events that are coming up in the near future. The first is the Hustle2EndHunger event sponsored by CROS coming up on Saturday, Oct. 6 th. If an you interesting haven t sentence or quote already, please go on our website to register to walk, volunteer or from the story here. to To catch the reader's attention, place donate. Second, the UMW Auction is coming up on Oct. 24 th. This is the biggest fundraiser of the year for UMW and is used for camp scholarships, mission trip scholarships, and many more things. Please plan to attend this fun event. You might have a treasure or service that you could donate to be auctioned as well. Well, that about covers it. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday, Oct. 13 th at 8:00 for breakfast. Blessings, Cary Collins Joe Radonis Pastor Patti cary@umcpb.org jradonis1@yahoo.com patti@umcpb.org REMEMBER: When you are down to nothing, God is up to something.

15 Page 15 Page 15 Appreciating your Pastors in October Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine. 1 Timothy 5:17 October is Pastor Appreciation Month. While that may not seem like a big deal to you, I am confident it is to our Pastors. Shepherding God s flock can be a lonely and weary task at times. Hundreds of pastors leave the ministry each year. Marcus Merritt, the author of the original article, personally ministers to discouraged pastors on a regular basis, so he knows firsthand the importance of public affirmation. Both the Old and New Testaments record stories of men who felt the loneliness and weariness of ministry. In 1 Kings 19, Elijah slumped under a broom tree and longed to die. He later told God that he felt all alone in the ministry. Paul lamented in 2 Timothy 4 that no man stood with him. God eventually showed Elijah that he had 7,000 supporters, and Paul came to understand that God was with him, even when he felt deserted by men. Pastor Appreciation Month is designed to keep our pastors out from under the broom tree! An encouraged pastor is a blessing to his/her congregation and his/her family. Our church can encourage and bless Pastor Patti simply by treating her and her husband to a date night at a nice restaurant. In fact, we should not have to wait until October, we could give them a date night on a regular basis. We should also treat Pastor Phyllis and a friend of her choosing to the same night out. Here is another way to encourage and bless our pastors. In lieu of a gift/lunch, etc., that we ask the congregation to make a 2nd mile gift to the church general fund. We think both Pastors would be happy with that and perhaps the extra funds will relieve some of the stress and pressure they are feeling. Parishioners wanting to take them to lunch or dinner would just be one more thing they need to schedule. These small gesture will go much further than you can imagine. It does not matter so much what you do, just that you do something meaningful for our pastors in October. The Apostle Paul spoke about the weight of the churches he led. By observing Pastor Appreciation Month, you are literally lightening our pastors load. Please do not let October pass without publicly appreciating Pastor Patti and Pastor Phyllis. If you have any questions please contact any Staff/Ministry Team member or office@umcpb.org, Marcus Merritt serves as a state missionary for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board in Church-Minister Relations.
