United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches 900 Brandywine Road, West Palm Beach, FL OFFICE: FAX: WEBSITE: office@umcpb.org Making Space in your heart for the BOTH/AND is possible only by not putting a period at the end of a person s life story. God makes room for our growing relationship of faith through His amazing grace that surpasses our understanding, but gives assurances through the lives we live and the faith heroes who came before us. I love the quote by Holley Gerth in the Everyday Matters Bible for Women (pg. 1497), Faith isn t about what we can muster up or power through, or pretend to understand...because we are all flawed and broken faith is about who we place it in the One who knows how small we are and sees that, not as an obstacle, but an opportunity to show His bigness through us. My favorite faith hero is Rahab, the Other. She was among the least in society, and yet because she lived the faith Jesus calls us to live, God chose her to be in the direct lineage of Jesus, the Christ. Why her? She was kind to the enemy. It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed with the people in her city who refused to obey God. For she had given a friendly welcome to the spies. (Hebrews 11:31 NLT ) Embracing the both/and in the spirit of Jesus allows us to give space to those whose preferences are different than ours and celebrate and worship God together. The rich diversity in our congregation that reflects our community reflects God s desire that though we are many individual parts, we are one in Christ. He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love. (Ephesians 4:16 NLT ) Throughout September, we will explore how the Fresh Expressions movement is a part of UMCPB s next step of faith. We will be referencing Bishop Ken Carter & Rev. Audrey Warren s recent book, FRESH EXPRESSIONS A New Kind of Methodist Church For People Not In Church. We are Wesleyan and believe that God is present in all lives. We are evangelical and believe that we have a calling to share the gospel. We are apostolic and believe that we cannot wait passively for people to pour into our church. We are United Methodists and believe we, as disciples of Jesus Christ, are to go make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. I am looking forward to sharing God s love with you as we seek to share God s love with others. Joyfully, Pastor Patti

5 "The gospel is only good news if it gets there in time" Carl F. H. Henry Page 5 Page 5 We have been once again approved to host Tim Tebow Foundation s Night to Shine on February 9, Since this is our third year, our grant for the prom is decreased significantly so that Tim Tebow Foundation can host more proms around the world. Our prom costs $10, to host. Tim Tebow Foundation is granting us $2, Therefore, we are prayerfully raising money so we can still host this incredible event. To that end, we have letters asking for a tax-deductible donation of $75 to sponsor an attendee at the Tim Tebow Foundation s Night to Shine Prom. If you know of a company or person who may want to help, please Phyllis at Phyllis@umcpb.org or phypar@comcast.net so a donation letter can be sent. Last year, 375 Night to Shine proms were held around the world. We were privileged to honor 100 guests with special needs at our Night to Shine as is part of our Through the Roof ministry for adults with special needs at UMCPB. Can you imagine how many smiles were created that night? Experiencing so many individuals with special needs being honored and valued was for each of us a little glimpse of heaven. We are hoping you can help us make this incredible night just as special this year. The Amigos Growth Group Meets every First & Third Sunday from 4:00-6:00 pm if you are interested in volunteering, please call Rev. Phyllis Parthemer For additional information on Our Special Needs & Congregational Care Ministry, please contact Rev. Phyllis Parthemer at or or phyllis@umcpb.org At every Night to Shine event, each guest is crowned king or queen of the prom and is treated as royalty. The gala night includes dancing, limo rides, makeup and shoe shining stations, flowers, lots of food, goody bags, a karaoke room, and even a room for the parents to escape for some peace and quiet. This year our goal is to accommodate 120 guests at our Night to Shine prom. Would you prayerfully consider helping us financially meet this expectation? A donation of $75 will cover one guest to have his or her Night to Shine. The donation is greatly appreciated and fully tax deductible. You can send the checks made out to UMCPB with Through the Roof/Night to Shine on the memo line or you can log onto our website umcpb.org and click on donate. God is certainly evident in all aspects of Night to Shine. We hope you can be part of the UMCPB Night to Shine this year. Thank you for considering this important request. 6 Page 6 Do you know why adults ask kids what they want to be when they grow up? For more information about the IRONMEN MINISTRIES, please contact Dino Benvenuti at (561) or (umcpb.ironmen@ gmail.com ) Join us for Men s Breakfast the 2nd Saturday of every month at 8:00 a.m. They re looking for ideas. Everyone wants to know what God s Will is for their life, I never knew what I wanted to be and it s getting late. A big part of my life growing up was about kids. When I was about ten my older brother was getting divorced and he had three young daughters. The next thing I knew they were coming to live with us because their mother couldn t take care of them. So, my parents took them in and raised them with my sister and me (I was the youngest until then). Now, I was no longer the baby and was changing diapers (not disposable the kind you wash out in the toilet) and other such duties, but I didn t mind. I never felt neglected, it was just a new part of life. A little later my oldest sister got divorced and her two sons came to our house too. Somehow, my father was supporting all of these kids on one income. When I was thirteen I was invited to church and got saved. I brought my mom to church, the girls and the two boys too. My father always stayed home making sauce, but everyone else in the house came and church became very important to us. Shortly after that the boys had a little sister and she came around too. When I went away to college my favorite song was Why Me Lord by Kris Kristofferson. At first it sounded like a complaint, but the lyrics are more about not deserving God s love and blessings. Why Me Lord, what have I ever done to deserve even one of the blessings I ve known Tell me Lord, what did I ever do, that was worth loving you or the kindness you ve shown? That s a great lesson in humility and an attitude of gratitude. Before I left for college my other sister got married and had a daughter, she was the cutest thing and she was around the house all the time. My sister got divorced and later married again and had a son. When I graduated from college I decided to join the Navy and served for four years in different parts of the country. When I came back I went to school in Miami and eventually took a job driving a truck (that s all Elvis and I have in common). Then I met my (now wife) and we started dating. She had a daughter (I call her mine now) that was ten at the time. As she was growing up we had our son and the adventure continued. He was always a great athlete and I coached him in baseball and basketball so I was around a lot of other kids too. In fact we started coming to this church because of baseball. I met Pastor David McEntire at a practice one day and we started talking. Later I got off the truck driving and started in Sales. I was making more money and at one point I almost felt guilty so I started tithing. I didn t know why I was being so blessed and then my sister-in-law got divorced (do you see a theme here?) and came to live with us with her two kids. Talk about a Full House. The Lord provided for us. 2 Corinthians 8:14-15 talks about your abundance may supply their lack. And later in Chapter 9 the abundance for every good work. That s how God helped us provide for the extra kids and family. So, my daughter grows up, gets married and has a son. Then she got divorced and we helped with our grandson. He s come to this church and been to Men s Breakfasts before. I coached him in Tee-Ball and beyond. Now he s grown and living in Georgia with his other grandparents. Then, my niece got pregnant, unmarried and did not want to keep the baby. A few of us got together and decided to help raise the child by alternating weekends. She s going to be thirteen at the end of this month. That brings us to our two grandchildren. It looks like their parents are headed for divorce and the only stable home for the kids is ours. They ll be with us full time now, so there s no Cialis commercial for my wife, but we love them with all of our hearts and wouldn t want them anywhere else. We can get them to school easily enough and bring them to this church that they both love and just do the best that we can. I started thinking about all of this the other day and it occurred to me, what if all of the events in our lives about young kids was just getting us ready for this? We all make mistakes in parenting and I could have said why me to having to go through it again. I could have been ready to retire soon (if I didn t refinance again). I ve paid my dues, I worked every day, learned how to tithe, I don t drink (anymore), cuss (my vocabulary has grown) or chase women (my wife hates when I do that). But when we go through a Purpose Driven Life and you still have questions about what you re here for, or why things happen, I just know that God brought me through all of that to be ready for this new chapter. Dear Lord, thank you for your love, protection, guidance and grace. Help me be ready for what comes next and to step up to the plate when you put people that need us in our lives. In Jesus name, Amen. Article submitted by Nick

Patti Aupperlee Beware of Hurricane Harvey Charity Fraud Scammers are now using the Hurricane Harvey disaster to trick people into clicking on links, in Facebook, Twitter and phishing s trying to solicit charitable giving for the flood victims. Here are some examples: Facebook pages dedicated to victim relief contain links to scam websites. Tweets are going out with links to charitable websites soliciting donations, but in reality include links to scam sites or links that lead to a malware infection. Phishing s dropping in a user's inbox asking for donations to #Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. Previous disasters have been exploited like this, and the scammers are going at it again. Be wary of anything online covering the Hurricane Harvey disaster in the following weeks. Don't fall for any scams. If you want to make a donation, go to the website of the charity of your choice and make a donation. Type the address in your browser or use a bookmark. Do not click on any links in s or text you might get. Whatever you see in the coming weeks about Hurricane Harvey disaster relief... THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK
