See Information on Page 11 United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches 900 Brandywine Road, West Palm Beach, FL OFFICE: FAX: WEBSITE: office@umcpb.org Hebrews 11:1-2 NLT Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. 2 Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation. The UMCPB tapestry that comprises our church family is colorful and diverse; yet the image of God unifies us. As disciples seeking to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world (UMC mission statement), we are unified with Christians around the world. This month I witnessed an abundance of faithful and beautiful ministries here at UMCPB! These ministries become another thread of the faith tapestry that has woven us together for over 125 years. Threads of God s Word spreading, along with his love, sweat, tears, heartbreak, and compassion you have shared throughout the month is amazing. Giving hope and joy to others, trusting God as he continues to strengthen the bonds that tie us all together to make up the UMCPB family. It is by faith we gather to make sandwiches for children in the CROS Ministries network; we participate in the music ministry; we pour God s love and grace into the families in Family Promise; adults and students grow in faith through Fine Arts Camp, VBS, Warren Willis camp; we gather in worship each week; we gather for a Sweet Hour of Prayer; we attend growth groups. We bring God s comfort in the Prayer Shawl ministry and hospital visits. We celebrate the legacy of individuals who have died and share in the lives of those who get married. It is by faith our church tapestry includes the many who honor God through the administrative responsibilities of the church. It is by faith that hearts are transformed through the blessing of serving with Through The Roof. It is by faith that Curbside Café offers love and hope through a dinner made by love. In August, we will be transitioning to a four-week faith series focusing on four Scriptural faith pillars (Abraham, Moses, Noah, and Rahab) who exemplified a life grounded in faith and trusting in God s grace. UMCPB lives out ministries of faith as shown in Hebrews 11. God s thread of grace weaves these diverse characters together so that we might continue the story. The colorful characters from Hebrews 11 continue to shape how we live out It is by faith today. It is by faith that our church tapestry includes those who continue to cast a vision for building on the legacy of greatness to meet our neighbors in an ever-changing neighborhood. The vision is to engage individuals in our neighborhood through common interests... a dog park, a nature trail, and a renovated basketball court. The faith that the people in Hebrews 11 lived out is the faith that we at UMCPB live out colorful and diverse by God s unfailing grace. Joyfully, Pastor Patti

4 Page 4 Page 4 A Big Thank you to everyone who participated, donated and attended our Benefit Concert Haiti Rebuild Project held on Saturday, July 8th We all had a great time with the various artist, dancers and crowd participation. Without your generous donations we could not have sent our Haiti Representative, Mr. Fritz Etienne down to Haiti with supplies to start the rebuilding of our Church/School in Thomas-Elie, Haiti. As you may recall, In October, 2016, Hurricane Matthew destroyed the building that was built by funds from UMCPB and used by the people of Thomas-Elie as both a church and a school that serviced over 150 children. We desperately need your help to rebuild. The people of Haiti are counting on us! "God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply" Hudson Taylor For more information on our Mission Ministry, please contact Joseph Radonis Chair Mission jradonis1@gmail.com We appreciate your continued support and we will be giving you updates as they become available on our church/school. Mission Boxes: Donations to the Mission Boxes for the month of AUGUST will go toward our overseas missions in Cuba, Peru, Haiti, and India. Thank you for your continued generosity. CROS Pantry: Bring in some extra nonperishable items for the CROS Food Pantry. Please remember the CROS Food Bin is in the kitchen serving area. Visit For the many ways you too can help. On August 6 th, the Amigos will be combining with the Children and Youth to hold bingo night in the Gathering Place from 4:00-6:00. (The Amigos will first have praise and worship then join in the Bingo fun.) On Tuesday, August 15 th from 4:00-6:00, Through the Roof will be hosting a second curbside at UMCPB. Gloria s famous Cuban pork and beans will be prepared by Gloria and Jim Harmon to be served curbside. We are naming it Pig Out Curbside. It will cost $6 for a meal of Cuban pork, rice, beans, cornbread and a cookie. All of these proceeds will go to Through the Roof Haiti: The school that we support in Haiti needs our help to rebuild and we are seeking $20, to begin this effort. Please consider supporting this mission by visiting the Go- FundMe page that has been set up to fundraise for this reconstruction effort. You can find the Go- FundMe page on the church s Facebook page or by visiting Ministries. This will be held two weeks after the choir s Curbside of spaghetti that supports missions. Next year, on February 9, 2018, we are honored to host Tim Tebow s Foundation Night to Shine prom at UMCPB. This is our third year to host this spectacular event. Tim Tebow s policy is to give the full grants to churches who have never hosted the event. So, instead of receiving the full grant, we are receiving $ ; therefore, we need to raise $ on our own. With that in mind, TTR has been working hard at raising money. If you are interested in sponsoring a guest with special needs for this prom, we are asking for a tax deductible donation of $75 for one guest. Write the check to UMCPB with Night to Shine guest in the memo lines. You can even give $10 a month between now and February to sponsor one of the guests. This gift will allow one guest to come, walk the red carpet, dance, enjoy catered food, karaoke and receive a gift bag from UMCPB. It truly is a Night to Shine for our guests. In Christ s Love, Phyllis

6 Page 6 Why is that always a question for me? I believe in God, I have faith, I know that Christ died for my sins and rose to give me eternal life. But why am I always so surprised when I noticed that he's working. Don't I know that He always is there.don't I know that scripture tells me that he will not forsake me. God is always working in my life. I just have to open my eyes and see it. But the world seems to get in the way. Things that happen daily and things that I can get upset about consume my thoughts and get in the way, which blinds me to the fact of his work in my life. As I was preparing this devotional, He was working on me right then. He is a part of my thoughts and life. Do you want to feel Christ? Take time, sit down and search for something that he wants you to share with someone. This was a tough devotional to prepare for because I thought someone would step up and do it this month so I just put it off. I didn't prepare in advance. Monday still no one. Now what? 4th of July and I still didn't have a clue what I wanted to talk about so I started praying and it consumed my thoughts. Wednesday came and still nothing. I got online and started googling some of the thoughts in my head about a topic. God worked, maybe not like I thought, but does He ever do it my way? I was led to a great article that I shared with Staff Parish and got a great response and thank you from the person who I shared it with. But still nothing in my ideas for what to do for a devotional. Is God working in my life? Thursday morning, early, I get a text message saying that the article that I put in July s Herald, from the last men s breakfast, really helped them. Bamm! God at work in my life. What a blessing to see it. I think God works like that. So after that text, I was reading my Bible in Psalm 8. 1 Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. 2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? 5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Continued on Page 7

7 Page 7 I wasn t just reading the Bible, I was studying and researching and He was there. No, I was aware of Him. He never is missing in action, I am! A light bulb moment! A blessing from the God that put everything under my feet. How Majestic are you Lord! My mind started just overflowing with words to share! God is working in my life. Looking back at what we talked about last month, getting close to God and looking for his direction in decisions that we make. You have to do it to see Him working. Reading to read is a good thing, but digging deeper is a better thing! For me, I think it has to do with the fact that reading the Bible and studying his word are two different things. Many times I read the Bible just to get it done. Studying the Bible is when I'm searching for something. In my small men s group last night, we talked about that. Whenever I do look for something while I'm reading I find it or he answers it. Can you relate? The things You have done for us! Is God working in my life? Oh yeah! God enlightens His word when we look for it and work through what we're reading and what we're studying. We serve an awesome God but we have to be faithful to that. Is God working in your life? Do you read your bible? If so share when and how. If not or occasionally. What will entice you to read it? Do you agree or disagree with the statement reading the bible is different than studying the bible. Explain? If you have ever experienced God working through something you read or studied, please share! Why does God wants us to read and study His word? Share some other ways you notice God working in your life! For more information about the IRONMEN MINISTRIES, please contact Dino Benvenuti at (561) or (umcpb.ironmen@gmail.com ). Mission studies are offered each year - a geographical, topical, and spiritual growth study. These studies motivate, inform, and enrich our commitment to global ministry. Local leaders are trained to lead one of the three mission studies through the organization's Mission u program offered around the country. Those leaders, in turn, are able to lead mission studies in their local and district groups. Reading Program: 2017 The Reading Program encourages members to think critically about current issues through an annual selection of member-reviewed books. It offers an excellent opportunity to deepen your spirituality and to broaden your understanding of our mission work. The Reading Program Leads to Action! For 140 years, United Methodist Women have been involved in mission that includes prayer, study and action. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The purpose of the program is to encourage United Methodist Women members to: Expand understanding of and participation in God s mission. Increase sensitivity to all human beings their needs, interests and concerns. Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today.
