1 JULY 2018 From Pastor Patti We begin year two together. The Holy Spirit is leading us in an exciting journey to share God s desire for UMCPB to be a vibrant and influential presence for those who worship with us, for those in the community, and around the world. Our District Superintendent, Rev. Dr. Gary Spencer, has asked the clergy in the Atlantic Central District to read and discuss the book, Canoeing the Mountains by Tod Bolsinger. Mr. Bolsinger brings attention to the readers that we are living in a culture very different than generations prior; but our mission is the same. The Holy Spirit continue to go before us. We are called to reach out into the mission field to those right outside the sanctuary door, Christian community is about gathering and forming a people, and spiritual transformation is about both individual and corporate growth, so that they together participate in Christ s mission to establish the kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven. (p. 39). As we continue to grow in excellence through worship, our facility, discipleship opportunities and missions, we will grow closer to Christ individually and as the UMCPB family. Please let me know how the leaders can walk with you on your journey. Joyfully, Pastor Patti

2 Page 2 We had a fabulous time at our swim party. Thirty-two people came to the house with most getting in the pool. I told the group that at the rate we are growing, we may need a second pool next year. What a joy! I absolutely love spending time with the Amigos. It has become family. We laughed; we cried; we prayed; and we ate together. Volunteers showed to help and interact with the Amigos. Everybody brought something for the party. One person was celebrating a birthday. A couple was celebrating their 2nd anniversary. Several people had prayer concerns. One young man was so excited to come because he just got out of the hospital. Sounds like the church where we are family. Thank you for your continued support with Through the Roof Ministry! If anyone would like to join us, please see the schedule below. Through the Roof is the Name of our Special Needs Ministry. Amigos is a group of people with Special Needs who meet here Bi-monthly. It is important to register quickly as the Oberammergau Passion Play is in high demand and sells out well in advance. Build Your Kingdom Here Rend Collective is a Northern Irish Christian folk rock band. The message of their song Build Your Kingdom Here is centered around the prayer, Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). God uses His people, the church, to be part of bringing His kingdom to earth. By being the church, we are saying YES to be the hands, feet and heart of God. We are also saying YES to be the vehicle for Him to build His kingdom. Whether you are at school, at work, or at home, that is EXACTLY where the kingdom of God is. Right here!! God s Kingdom is His church!! - Chad Stoffel For more information about any of the ministries of the music department, please contact Cary Collins (cary@umcpb.org) or Chad Stoffel (chad@umcpb.org) at x17. 5 Page 5 Page 5 "TOUGH TIMES EVENTUALLY GIVE WAY TO HOPE AND A FUTURE!" These words make me think about Family Promise and the tough times the guest families face as they relocate from their previous home to their new home sometime in the future. Since they move from one Host Congregation to another Host Congregation every Sunday, they are always on the move until they get back into a home of their own. Can you imagine the despair of losing your job and/or house? Can you imagine the tough times associated with physically and mentally relocating every week? Can you then imagine the hope attained as you struggle to regain your self-sufficiency and knowing that you again can have a future in a home of your own and you won't have to relocate every week? This can, and does, happen for our Family Promise guest families as a result of the Host/ Support Congregations in Family Promise of North/Central Palm Beach County. UMCPB has been one of those Host Congregations since the local affiliate began hosting in August UMCPB has hosted 26 times and number 27 will begin on August 19. The members and friends of UMCPB have been very supportive of Family Promise and we thank you for that support. Family Promise partners with the interfaith community to help homeless children by empowering their family to regain self-sufficiency. These partners work together to help our neighbors who are in temporary need of safe shelter, food, transportation, mentoring, support to get a job, etc. The Host and Support Congregations and The Family Promise Staff help provide all of these plus the loving, caring, sharing, understanding and emotional support necessary for the families to rebuild their hope and a future. If you have never been an active participant in a Host Week, we encourage you to get involved and experience the thrill and humbling experience of serving the guest families, getting to know them and watching them as they make their strides to self-sufficiency. We hope you will help be an active participant for our August 19 Host Week! Be on the lookout for volunteer sign-ups beginning July 29 in The Gathering Place. If you have any questions or comments, contact Fred or Thom. Keep Family Promise in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks and God Bless for your continued support! 7 Page Page 7 7 From Pastor Patti Young Ministry, by William Joyner. I was raised on a farm. We had a problem with coyotes. They wouldn t mess with our cattle, but they d mess with our dogs, our small sheep, and things like that. Sometimes they, the coyote s, would kill them outright. Now, you can solve the problem by getting a gun. That solves your problem, but it doesn t solve the coyote s problem. Another thing you can do is capture that coyote and put him in a cage. That solves the sheep s problem, but you have not solved the coyote s problem. He s in a cage pacing back and forth and all he wants to do is eat sheep, that s it. You give that coyote a chance, opening the door to the cage, and he will run out. Keep the door to the cage closed, and he will pace back and forth, back and forth. There is only one way to fix that coyote s problem and that s to change his nature, his heart, and make him something he is not. There are people in church today who are, in one way or another, forced to be in church. These people, forcing themselves, cage themselves up, but in their hearts, they re pacing back and forth, back and forth, back and forth. If the door to their cage opens, they bolt. Some young people bolt upon graduation because they re hearts have never belonged to God. They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us, but they re going showed that none of them belonged to us. That s first John 2:19, the new international version, version which causes me to wonder if the ones who re about to go out from us really belong to us. We can wait to find out later, when it may be too late, or we can take some ownership like, right now. A small group could sponsor a student while they re away from home. The church could send a care package to someone away at university. The Ironmen could pay special attention to the young men. We could create something called, THE YOUNG MEN- ISTRY. If we, the church, would couple that sort of stuff with the open admission of being in prayer for young people everywhere, we would own ourselves some young people who would remain with us and return to us. Let s take some ownership! Ahm, I William Joyner, have never lived on a farm. The introduction to this bit of writing is taken from the Devotional Coyote Story. Thanks for having read this far.

10 Page Page 10 Amplified Student ministry is off to a great start this Summer. We recently wrapped up a 6 part series on the Shema. We have recently begun a new series on the Lord s Prayer. Unfortunately the Lord s Prayer has become too common place amongst the majority of believers. This series seeks to dig deep into the prayer and restore the beauty and power that it would have had when Jesus first spoke it. After that, we will be starting a new series called When Heaven Meets Earth. Imagine heaven see clouds? A pearly gate? Golden walls? For most of us, the word heaven conjures up a cartoonish image of a city floating on cotton, even if that s not really what we believe God s dwelling place is like. It s time to forget all of that. In this study, we want to begin to think about heaven the way the Bible thinks about heaven.
