1 MARCH 2019 From Pastor Patti 900 Brandywine Road, West Palm Beach, FL As I write this, the Special Session of the General Conference has not yet taken place in St. Louis, Missouri, February 23-26; but it will have taken place by the time you read this. The purpose of the Conference was to receive and act on a report from the Commission on a Way Forward, authorized to examine paragraphs in The Book of Discipline concerning human sexuality and to explore options to strengthen church unity. The impact of the decisions made are yet unclear, but what is crystal clear is that we will continue our mission to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world through UMCPB. ( We are preparing our hearts for our Lenten Journey, beginning with Ash Wednesday Service, March 6 at 6:30pm in the Chapel. We invite you to travel 40 days with us using Walter Brueggemann s Devotions for Lent called, A Way Other Than Our Own. We begin our Lenten journey addressed by the remarkable assurance that the God who summons us is the God who goes along with us. As the journey of the Hebrew slaves experience times of wilderness and wandering, to Jesus temptation in the desert, God has always called people out of their safe, walled cities into uncomfortable places, revealing paths they would never have chosen. (Back cover). Books are available in the office for $10. As with Advent, we often rush to Christmas morning without taking the time to prepare ourselves. This season of Lent, take the time to journey the 40 days of devotions to prepare your heart, mind, soul, and body to fully receive the gift of the resurrected Christ when Easter morning arrives. This year we continue our tradition of Thursday Lenten Lunches at 12:15pm beginning March 7 in the Chapel. Each week you will receive a short devotion and then share in lunch together in the Gathering Place. To-go lunches are offered for those who have short lunch breaks. We will hold our Spring Festival on Saturday, April 13, Maundy Thursday Service April 18, and Stations of the Cross at noon on April 19. We will celebrate Easter Sunday Services. Please join William Joyner and I as we lead our second Paint & Parable series at the parsonage on March 22, 2019 at 6:30pm. We will have a time of painting and studying a parable. The evening also includes spending time together, laughter, and of course, great refreshments. The cost for the evening is $20 and we can accommodate 12 people. We do not want the cost to be prohibitive, so please contact me if it is. In order to have the correct number of supplies RSVP s are required. Please contact me my cell phone or . (Information at the bottom of page). Thank you for the privilege of serving you as your pastor and for how you seek to strengthen God s Kingdom. I look forward to spending time with you. Please contact me on my cell (561) or me at patti@umcpb.org. Joyfully, Pastor Patti

2 Page 2 You Are Invited To Join Us On A Lenten Journey Thursday s Lenten Devotions & Lunch 12:15pm March 7 April 11 Reflecting on... Lent recalls times of wilderness and wandering from newly freed Hebrew slaves in exile to Jesus temptation in the desert. God has always called people out of their safe, walled cities into uncomfortable places, revealing paths they would never have chosen. Today, we are called to walk an alternative path-one of humility, justice, and peace. You are invited to consider the challenging, beautiful life that comes with walking the way of grace. 4 Page 4 An Update from the General Council by Bishop Carter Dear Florida Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Some are grateful for the results of the Special Session. And others sought a different outcome. All of this will take some time to process. Human sexuality is a topic on which our people have differing views. As evidenced by the vote of the special session, we are a global church with very different contexts. We were not able to achieve contextual differentiation as envisioned by the Commission on a Way Forward. By a majority vote, we passed the Traditional Plan, with some parts ruled unconstitutional. It now goes to the Judicial Council for review at their next meeting but our existing Discipline language is maintained. We are a global church. This is a great gift in that God blesses us with diversity and the gospel is lived and shared across cultures. This is a great challenge in that we have different understandings of the LGBTQ community and, indeed, the LGBTQ persons in our own churches. By a majority, the U.S. church seems to favor the One Church Plan that would have more openly welcomed pastors from the LGBTQ community and allowed for same-sex marriage. And, an overwhelming majority of the Council of Bishops endorsed the One Church Plan. I am a person of evangelical and orthodox faith and respect those who see this primarily as a matter of scriptural interpretation. I will continue to live my promises of consecration as a bishop by abiding by the Book of Discipline as a resource for oversight and supervision in support of the church s mission (BOD 403). Some believe the arc of history is moving towards more acceptance of LGBTQ people, not less. Pew Research teaches us that younger generations in the U.S., especially under 45 and more so under 30, will not participate in a church that rejects the LGBTQ community. A letter from United Methodists under the age of 35 was shared at the Special Session, with over 15,500 signatories. A greater number of LGBTQ voices were heard on the floor of the Special Session than ever before. Many of these were younger voices. I offer the following words to the LGBTQ community: Please know that you are of sacred worth. You are not the problem. You are not "out there." You are present in our churches. You bless us with your faith and your gifts strengthen the church. And my calling, for you and all people, is to remove the obstacles to your experience of the grace of God, and especially in the life of The United Methodist Church. I also offer these words to the evangelical community: Please know that your faith is a great gift to God and to your local churches. Too often, your stances have been misunderstood as driven by hatred, as opposed to being of deeply held faith. Your lives have been changed by the good news of Jesus, and you have a deep desire that others know this grace. Our denomination is blessed by you and needs your gifts in our calling to share God s love across the world. Our conference includes at every level of leadership evangelicals who are of the utmost integrity. We remain a denomination that is open to people of all nations, ethnic groups, ages, and sexual orientations. We hope to find better ways to embrace our diversity and be on mission together. Our POV process continues to be a resource available to you. Despite our differences, we will continue to work together to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world and to share God s love with all people. The peace of the Lord, Ken Carter Bishop, Florida Conference Note: To hear more reflection please join Bishop Carter for a webinar with Delegation leaders on Friday March 1 st at 11 AM (

5 Children s Ministry Page 5 UMW A new ministry is being launched by our Children s Ministry called Messy Church held the last Sunday of every month from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. It is an alternative form of worship for families that might not feel like a regular Sunday morning service works well for them. In Messy Church, all of the activities which include crafts, a meal, and a family time of worship will be based around a Bible story. Kate could use help in staffing the event. You can contact her at kate@umcpb.org or x107. Please support our Annual Bake Sale at the Spring Craft Festival on Saturday April 13, Our May Tea will be held on Saturday, May 11th and our Annual Auction is scheduled for October, Please support our various events as all funds raised goes to support our various Mission Programs in the church and beyond. Through the Roof Our time for Night to Shine was amazing because of your generosity. We watched our guest arrive with hopeful smiles. Our professional photographer took photo of our guests with their crowns and tiaras on in front of the step and repeat sign. The guest walked the red carpet as kings and queens of the prom. Thank you for your help in making this event a Night to Shine for our guest. Young Adults Haiti Cuba Family Promise Our young adults have been serving as a support team to other mission projects in the church. Christmas Dinner Theatre and Messy Christmas are just two of the projects that they have stepped up to assist. We love our young adults and are grateful for their missional spirit! Fritz Etienne will be heading to Haiti on March 23rd to connect with our sister church and school there. We will be publishing in the bulletin a list of items that are needed that he can take down with him as the trip gets closer. UMCPB is funding the school and teacher salaries in Thomas-Elie. Funding for 6 months has been sent to Cuba for our sister churches there. Robert Pinera, who has accompanied a couple of our mission trips there took funding to Pastors Ismel and Eider. It s hard to imagine that $75/month per church pays the pastors salaries and also supports many in need within their congregations. Our next host dates will be May 26 - June 2. All volunteer positions will be done online. People will be available at the back of the Gathering Place to assist with sign-ups following the 9:30 and 11:00 services for those that need it. With online sign-ups, you will automatically receive a confirmation as well as reminders.

6 Music and the Arts Page 6 Curbside Café will be Wednesday, March 6th featuring our spaghetti dinner. Remember, curbside service has been moved from the circle drive, to the back of the building by the kitchen (from 4:00 to 5:30). Simply pull up by the kitchen and someone will come out and take your order! Dinner will be served inside from 5:30 to 6:00. Mark your calendars for Saturday, April 13 for a day of fun on campus! There will be a myriad of activities beginning at 7:00am. All activities will conclude by 2:00pm. If you re in charge of a ministry area, this is a great opportunity to raise some operating dollars for your ministry. Get creative! The more, the merrier! The festival schedule is as follows: 7:00am 12:00pm Churchwide Rummage Sale (NOTE: Rummage donations are greatly appreciated and will accepted from Sunday, April 7th through Friday, April 12th.) 7:00am 9:00am Pancake Breakfast sponsored by Catalyst Youth Group 9:00am 2:00pm Fair Food (Yes! Huge kudos to the planning team of Night to Shine for all the hard work you did to put on Night to Shine for 145 guests with special needs. With parents, guardians, guests and volunteers, we had around 400 people on property for the event. Everyone was very gracious and welcoming. Thank you, brothers and sisters in Christ, for praying and supporting this event where we crowned each guest as a king or queen of the prom. God s love was fruitful as we watched our volunteers take special time to love on our guests. God makes each prom more and more special. Thank you, church for all your support. The Amigos group is growing and we need your help. If you are interested in serving with the Amigos, our group of adults with special needs, please let Phyllis know. 10 Page 10 Exciting News from our Youth Ministry Page 10 I am excited to announce that we have a brand new teaching series coming to Catalyst. Starting the week of February 25th we will be kicking off a 7-part series we are calling 'A Flexible Faith'. Young people are turning their backs on the Church at an alarming rate. A big reason for this is that our students are realizing that what they have been taught to believe in church and about the Bible does not line up with their real-life experiences. The truth is, the stream of Christian Orthodoxy is both wide and deep... but most Christians never leave their own little pool. Often, we fail to realize that there are many ways to follow Jesus faithfully because we have been taught that our tradition is the only alternative to non-belief. This series is designed to explore the lively theological diversity that stretches back through Church history and across the spectrum of Christianity today. We want our students to see that the faithful multiplicity within the body of Christ is a strength of our faith and not a weakness. This series is NOT designed for me to answer these difficult questions for the students. Instead, I will be presenting various answers and perspectives from across the Christian spectrum of belief. We will together as a group, wrestle with each one of those perspectives, encouraging students to think for themselves. Students will be encouraged to walk courageously through these tough questions, learning from their fellow Jesus followers, hopefully leading them to discover new depths of faith that can help them stay secure through the storms of life. Please be sure to check out the week-to-week schedule that I have provided with this article. I look forward to this exciting new series! Much Love, Josh
