Gather in the meeting room most weeks after the second service to ask questions and discuss the scripture passage and sermon Wonderful Wednesdays Poverty Mission Project: The group from FPCN that traveled to Houston to help hurricane Harvey victims were stunned to learn how large the homeless population is in Houston, and how few resources exist to help them. The need there is greater than ever, so, as a Wonderful Wednesdays mission project, the youth will be assembling hygiene kits to send to Loaves and Fishes, Houston, for their clients. What can you do to help? Drop off any of the following items in the baskets outside the office from now until 10/17. Monetary donations are also appreciated. Pare Down Your Food Container Collection Looking to get rid of a few of your food storage containers? Bring them to the church. We use these containers to send leftovers home with members or to bring meals to homebound members or shelters. Please be sure all containers have no warps or cracks and a tight fitting lid. Join newvoices in Concert and in the Community newvoices has traditionally looked to current community issues and needs for programming. This fall they embark on an ambitious project called Please Stay, a concert that examines the impact suicide has on our community, our schools, our families, and our future. Suicide is a major issue affecting us and we will dive into music that reflects the personal struggle, the public outcry, and the communal efforts underway to stop suicide now. This national issue has been the catalyst for recent choral compositions by many of the nations leading young musicians. Far from a lament, the concert will also feature music of hope and redemption. 4 Friday, Oct. 19, 5:30 to 8:30PM Hey! What s That Sound? If you happen to be in the building on Tuesday evenings you could hear the amazing sound of the Fox Valley Chorus Sweet Adelines. The group moved to First Presbyterian Church last month after 17 years at Grace Lutheran Church in Appleton. We are so happy to be in this space where our sound is more closely matched to those where we perform. If you are a woman interested in four-part a capella harmony, Sue Schmid (gimlets54@gmail.com) and stop in the Fellowship Hall at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesdays. Visit our website at The chorus is currently preparing for a Saturday, November 10 th performance to honor our nation s Veterans. Performances will be held at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the Jane Bergstrom Fine Arts Center at St. Mary s Catholic High School. Veterans and their families will be recognized during both programs. Thanksgiving Food Collection PLEASE BRING DONATIONS BY FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 16 TH AT NOON Every year at this time, the First Presbyterian Deacons collect nonperishable food items for distribution to struggling local-area families. 5 Poor nutrition causes nearly half (45%) of deaths in children under five 3.1 million children each year CROP Hunger Walk Our JOY and SPY youth will be walking in the Annual CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 14 th! 6 When I leave church after worship on Sundays, I feel renewed. No matter how draining or stressful the week has been, gathering and singing and praying together fills me with new hope and joy and energy, and launches me into the week ahead. That s how a heart works drawing in the depleted, deoxygenated blood, and sending it back out, filled with new oxygen and nutrients to share with the rest of the body. The task of the church is to draw people together into the heart of God, renew them with the breath of the Holy Spirit, and send them forth to share the love of Christ with this tired, depleted world. That s what we do, week after week going out to give ourselves, coming in to be renewed, then going out to give ourselves again. Something happens when we are gathered into the heartbeat of God. It happens to us as individuals, and it happens to the gifts that we give through the church. Our offerings, gathered together with prayer, are empowered to renew the ministries of the church within these walls and the missions of the church outside of these walls. It s a heartbeat that never stops thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump love in, love out. Over the weeks ahead, please think about how you have been renewed through this church, and how, through your giving, you can renew others. Then, on Celebration Sunday, October 28, we will gather together for a single service at 10:15 a.m., dedicate our pledges for the coming year, and share a potluck lunch to celebrate all the ways this church renews us and our world.
