1 NOVEMBER 2016 United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches 900 Brandywine Road, West Palm Beach, FL OFFICE: FAX: WEBSITE: From Pastor Kent Church/Charge Conference Pastor s Report: State of the Church The United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches continues to demonstrate the grace of God and offering Christ to the community and world. People are growing in a walk with God and have a strong desire to be involved in ministry to the local community and abroad. The church is making a positive difference in our world and we want to continue to do so. At the same time we acknowledge that we are in a transitional period. UMCPB has been on a plateau this past year and even seeing a slight decline in average worship attendance. Offerings have been down, and we face financial challenges with the beautiful facility we have and the many ministries we do. The first step was to acknowledge where we are and that we don t want to stay on a trajectory of plateau or decline. Our desire is to be a strong and healthy church. We are here for a reason, we have a lot to offer, and we believe God has so much more for us to do and be. The strength of the church is being witnessed as we come together as a people pray and strategize ways that can move us from where we find ourselves to a preferred future. One of our first tasks is to rethink our vision and where we want to see ourselves three years from now. Our mission is clear to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We want to fulfill the mission in everything we do as a church. Through seeking God, prayer, and patience, we will etch out a vision for making disciples. There are a couple of areas that with some intentional focus I believe we could quickly begin a turn around. One is in the area of newcomer and hospitality. Connecting with new persons who come to the church, multiple follow-ups, walking them through to membership, and getting them plugged into a small group and/or service area would be a part of this. Also tracking attendance and making contacts of those who have missed church. We are seeing a need for a dedicated staff person to lead this ministry. It takes a lot of time, energy, patience, organization, and training. Another area for intentional focus is discipleship and small groups. Statistics show that healthy churches have strong discipleship and small group ministries. While we have discipleship and small group learning opportunities going on, we know we can constantly improve. (Kaizen!) We recognize the need for a dedicated staff person to give leadership to this vitally important aspect of the church. Special Needs Ministry is an area where God is at work in our church, therefore with great anticipation we seek to staff this ministry with a part time position. Many people in the community are being reached in this ministry, and not only those with special needs, but caregivers and people who have a heart for helping in this area. It s a joy to be a part of this journey. The United Methodist Church of the Palm Beaches will embrace the direction God is leading us and we will give ourselves fully to the guiding of the Holy Spirit to live in and through so we may bring honor to the Lord Jesus Christ. May God s great work of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world happen through UMCPB. Rev. A. Kenton Crow Jr.

Page 3 I ll Be Home for Christmas is a heartwarming show set in 1941 San Francisco during the Golden Age of Radio. Howard West, a widower, shares an apartment with his two daughters, Norma and Angie, and grandson. Micky. His son-in-law, Pete, is serving in the military. As they prepare for their Thanksgiving dinner, they are filled with hope that Pete might be coming home for a visit. Lives are focused around the radio which offers much-needed escape from an unsettled world with great music and radio dramas. As the days go on with no word from Pete, their anxiety mounts. Until finally, on December 7th, the radio delivers devastating news. Where is God in the midst of such tragedy? The opening night of our show will be on December 7th, the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. How fitting that we will share the story of a family that struggled to make sense of war and yet found great hope through the Child in a manger. Today, many families are still spending their days filled with anxiety as their loved ones are in harm s way protecting this great country of ours and fighting for hope and freedom overseas. Today we still ask the question, Where is God in the midst of this? Don t miss this important message not just for our time, but for ALL time: Christ came to us to bring peace, hope and joy. TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE through our Bookstore. You can also purchase tickets online through the church website. DINNER THEATRE DATES: December 7th, 8th, 9th TIMES: Doors open at 6:00 / Dinner served at 6:30 / Show at 7:30 MENU: Turkey & Dressing / Cranberry Sauce / Mashed Potatoes & Gravy / Green Beans / Salad / Bread / Dessert COST: $25 - Adults / $15 - Children (12 and under) / Group discount: 16 or more, deduct $2 per ticket For more information about any of the ministries of the music department, please contact Cary Collins or Anthony Hevia at x17 or x27 or cary@umcpb.org or anthony@umcpb.org. 5 Missions Page 5 "Missions is the overflow of our delight in God because missions is the overflow of God's delight in being God." John Pipe Haiti- Our Response in Haiti In Haiti, an estimated 25 percent of the country has been affected by Hurricane Matthew. Some 300 to 800 people have been killed, and 29,000 homes, schools and other structures were damaged or destroyed. The health, education and protection needs are massive, with an estimated 750,000 people requiring urgent assistance. We are especially concerned for vulnerable children, including some 2,000 little ones separated from their families, children at risk of deadly cholera, and up to 130,000 children out of school. The church, school and school building we built and support in Haiti was completely destroyed by the hurricane. With your prayers and help We will rebuild. Fritz our church representative will be travelling to Haiti to assess the damages in person, bring down a few much needed items for the children and teachers and to commission the rebuilding of the school. The Needs in Haiti are beyond our comprehension but we MUST help in whatever capacity we are able too. Cholera prevention and basic health services. Setting up "child-friendly spaces" to provide children unable to go to school with a safe and protected space supported by trained staff, while their parents deal with the aftermath of the storm. Stockpiling non-food items including hygiene kits, baby items, household kits, mosquito nets and so much more. It is never easy to witness the devastation caused by a deadly storm like Matthew, but with your help, we will be there for the school children when they need us the most. For ways that you can help this Mission Project, please contact Joseph Radonis at jradonis1@yahoo.com or Mr. Fritz Etienne at fritzl4@live.com Mission Boxes: Donations to the Mission Boxes for the month of November will go toward our overseas missions in Cuba and Haiti, Thank you for your continued generosity. CROS Pantry: Bring in some extra nonperishable items for the CROS Food Pantry. Please remember the CROS Food Box is in the kitchen serving area. Global Ministries Resources: Please take some time to explore some of the things that our denomination is doing in the mission field through Global Ministries and UMCOR. 6 Through The Roof Ministry Page 6 Extending God s extravagant love by opening our hearts and doors to persons with disabilities Through the Roof wishes to thank all those who made the delicious dishes from around the world for the Fall Festival at UMCPB. The food was enjoyed. At the October Amigos TAG praise worship, Kevin Wimer was baptized. We discussed baptism and even dipped our hands in the baptismal font to remember our own baptisms. Check out our Facebook page for some moments of the service. In November, we are joining together to hold a Thanksgiving feast for our friends with special needs in group homes. It is a time to be thankful and we would like to share that time with our friends. As brothers and sisters in Christ, we are asking if you would either contribute to this cause, come help serve or just come and enjoy. Dinner will be served at 2:00. I'm sure there will be a fun activity as well. If you are interested, please Phyllis at phypar@comcast.net or contact Debby Oetinger. I am truly grateful for the love and support of the members and friends of UMCPB.
