2 A Letter from Father... Page 2 March 6, 2016 Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan women: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate everyone of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this though the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. 4 Parish & Community Activities Page 4 March 6, 2016 SFDS Ministry Fair Did you ever wonder what it takes to be involved in a Ministry? Ever wanted to do the readings at a Mass or sing in a choir? Did you know we have a Youth Group? Well, this is your chance to find out! In the parish hall on Sunday, March 6, from 7:30 am - 1:30 pm will be our annual St. Francis de Sales Ministry Fair. There will be a special Burrito Breakfast hosted by the Knights of Columbus. In addition the Knights will be offering a very limited number of doughnuts for a nominal donation. This is your chance to ask question from the members of the ministries and find out how you can answer God s call to serve Him! Knights of Columbus St. Patrick Corned Beef & Cabbage Dinner Tickets can be purchased from Knight in the parish hall during the Ministry Fair; and courtyard outside the church after the 5:00 pm Spanish Mass today. The St. Patrick s will be held in nearby St. Catherine of Alexandra Church parish hall, on Saturday evening, March 19. Doors open at 6 pm.; with dinner at 7pm. The event includes great food and drinks, prizes, Celtic music and fun for everyone! All proceeds go toward our Religious Education program. St. Ann s Sewdality News. The St. Anne s Sewdality will be meet on Thursday, June 11th, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM, in the multipurpose room. 6 Fourth Sunday of Lent Page 6 March 6, 2016 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the first steps to a Catholic wedding takes place in the parish rectory, as the newly engaged come forward to set a date. We owe this scenario to reforms made by the emperor Charlemagne late in the eighth century. He required that nobles and commoners alike have public weddings, and also required that marrying couples be examined for factors that would block a marriage, such as previous marriages or close kinship. The pope was more conservative, however, and resisted the emperor s creativity. It was enough for the pope that the couples exchange consent. That tradition is passed on to this day, to some couples surprise. In 866, Pope Nicholas ruled that a marriage was legal and binding even without a liturgy or public celebration. After that, it was the consent of the couple, not the blessing of parents or priest that make a marriage count. If consent was lacking, such as through abduction or fear, then the marriage could not take. Charlemagne got a great deal done, but he was a political flash in the pan, and the empire had virtually collapsed by the year Europe broke into a checkerboard of princedoms and languages, and at last all marriages came under the church, the glue holding the known world together. El filósofo romano-español Séneca (siglo I) afirmaba: "la religión es algo que para la persona común es verdad, para el sabio es falso y para el poderoso es útil". A su vez, el romano-judío Pablo de Tarso declara que en Cristo, Dios ha revelado que la persona común y necia derribará la falsedad de los sabios (1 Cor 1:18-31). El latino creyente reconoce que su fe nació del dolor de la conquista y no niega los abusos clericales, pero confía en el Evangelio reconciliador.
