2 A Letter from Father Page 2 January 8, 2012 From the pen of Fr. Louis. KNOW THAT YOU WILL BE BLESSED WHEN YOU SHARE YOUR GIFTS!! The Three Kings - Melchior, Balthazar, Caspar - find Jesus after a long journey! They bring Him some amazing gifts - gold, frankincense and myrrh - not really gifts for a baby child, but wonderful gifts for the Son of God, our King, our Savior, our Lord. The Kings were overjoyed to find the Christ Child and they bowed down before Him and did Him homage. They had traveled a long journey, endured the difficulties of rough roads and had saddle sores from riding their camels on such a far distant trip. Yet, they endured and were blessed to arrive at the place where the Christ Child lived. I imagine that the gifts we received at Christmas are now being used, put away, or exchanged. The joy we felt in receiving them becomes a memory as we travel on in this New Year. If we can, let us take a few moments to stop and ponder the sacrifices made to give us these gifts. Time was spent in choosing the right gift. Money was spent to purchase it and then so carefully wrapped-up in brightly colored paper presented with loving care. We felt happiness, joy, awe and excitement. This is good to experience! We may come to the realization that we have received so many more gifts. We may come to know that God has blessed each one of us with something special. We may come to see how God has blessed us in our lives. It is important to look into our hearts to know how we have been blessed. It may be that our voices can be used to sing in the parish choir. Maybe our reading skills can be used to proclaim God s word as a lector at Mass. Our desire to share our faith with our children can be put to use in our religious education program. Do we have a heart of compassion that can be used in visiting the sick and homebound? The wise Kings brought their gifts to God. We, too, are asked to bring our gifts to God in service of the church and God s people. In giving our gifts, we will be blessed. You can count on that!! Peace,

A few will be in on the secret: the colors of the beads are derived from the gifts of the magi - gold for wealth, purple for power, green for good health. The gifts are also a key to the identity of the Christ Child: the incense for God; the gold for a king; the myrrh, fragrant burial ointment for one who comes to die. Centuries ago, today's feast bore the heavy burden of celebrating all the manifestations of Christ's identity: the birth of Jesus, the coming of the magi, the baptism of the Lord, the wedding feast at Cana. It was too much for one day. Fortunately the one day has blossomed into a whole season of grateful celebration, stretching behind us into Advent and ahead of us into the Baptism of the Lord and to Christ's coming again in glory. Tonight, be sure to light the Christmas lights and gather at the crèche for a favorite carol and a prayer. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.
