2 A Letter from Father... Page 2 April 30, 2017 LEFT WITH AN EMPTY TOMB The funeral and prayer services are over, the lingering piles of flowers and hand written notes keep their memory alive and we are reminded of yet another school shooting. A teacher is dead; a child dead. At times like this; this happening in San Bernardino and so many similar events around the nation and the world, I am moved to write about faith, doubts and crisis. It is very, very easy to be a person of faith when all goes well. When life is without any real daily crisis, when the hardest thing to accept are the death of elderly parents and going to the doctor for a stubbed toe, it is easy for each of us to be a person of faith. But when a crisis tears at our hearts or when a young spouse dies or worst still a child dies, or an important relationship falls apart, then very often we feel our faith ebbing. Many times we enter into a period of anger at God and a time of doubt. This does not mean that we have lost our faith. It simply means we are called to a deeper faith. It was easy, I would imagine, for the disciples to believe in the Lord when they felt the magnetism of His words, when they witnessed His healings, when they saw His miracles. But it was much harder for them to believe when He was taken away to be killed. It was harder to believe when they realized that they could be killed for having been His followers. But when He came to them and they saw Him, their faith was restored. And Jesus tells them about a greater faith that He has called you and me to. The Lord looked down the ages at us and said, Blessed are those who have not seen yet believe. We pray, God help my wife to be cured of cancer. God please save our marriage. God protect my child who is in the Army. If we see our prayers being heard, all is well and good, it is as if we had seen the Lord. But how much greater is our faith when we hold on to the Lord when our prayers are not answered. Two Sundays ago, we were called to believe in the Resurrection. Our own faith in the Resurrection is not based on experiencing a presence of the Risen Lord, but on an Empty Tomb. When we feel empty, when we feel that the Lord is no longer in our lives we have to recognize that more than ever He is Alive, Among us. We are called to recognize that God is present in bad times as well as in good times and then choose to believe. Our faith is based not just on our experience of the good, but also in our choosing of God during a crisis. The crisis, while not caused by God, can lead us to a deeper faith in Him then we have previously. Peace,

Designated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as a National Sanctuary of Prayer and Pilgrimage, the Basilica is our nation s preeminent Marian shrine, dedicated to the patroness of the United States, the Blessed Virgin Mary under her title of the Immaculate Conception. This patronal church is home to over 80 chapels and oratories that honor the Mother of God and represents the people, culture and traditions that are the fabric of the Catholic faith and mosaic of our nation. Nearly a century in the making, this great Marian shrine, affectionately referred to as America s Catholic Church, has been a work in progress since the laying of its foundation stone in Now, as its one hundredth anniversary approaches, a monumental effort is underway to complete this Hymn in Stone as envisioned by its founder, Bishop Thomas J. Shahan, with the mosaic ornamentation of the Trinity Dome, it s Crowning Jewel. A collection will take place in our diocese this weekend of April 29th and 30th, Our support of this national collection for the Trinity Dome will help bring to completion what our predecessors began nearly a century ago at our nation s patronal church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thank you for your support Class Registration Registration for the English Religious Education Program will take place from 8:00 AM to Noon on Sunday, May 7th and May 21st. Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast The Knights of Columbus will host a Pancake Breakfast in our parish hall next Sunday morning, May 7th, from 7:30 AM - Noon. The beneficiary of the Knights charitable efforts will be Notre Dame High School s After School Athletics Program. Admission donation asked is: $7 per person. The menu will included: scrambled eggs, buttermilk pancakes (patrons may ask for 2nds), 2 pork sausage links, hash brown potatoes, coffee or decaf and fruit punch.
