2 A Letter from Father. Page 2 August 10, 2014 Parish Workings The Parish hall s floor, which was in a terrible state, has been refurbished. The beautiful hardwood floor now looks almost brand new. Also, with the help of some members of the parish, we were able to paint the lower portion of the walls of the hall. The refurbishing of the floor was done at a cost of $6, We are close to getting a final contract for the painting of the parish buildings. The first phase should consist of the inner courtyard - church and school. The cost is around $140, We are still making a study on the contract. The inner courtyard is in dire need of painting, so hopefully, we can finalize a contract so as to begin. The upkeep of our parish structure is the responsibility of all of the members of the parish. We all need to be involved in maintaining the well-being of the parish buildings and utilities. We would ask that we can be generous as possible in supporting the Building Fund and Diocesan Development Fund programs. Peace, STEWARDSHIP GIVING PRAYER Good and gracious God, we thank you for all we are and all we have. Everything is a gift from your infinite generosity. We marvel at how bountiful is your kindness. We rest in appreciation of your enduring mercy. As we explore our responsibility to be good stewards, fill us with the compassion of Jesus, your Son. We are now accepting donations for the Goodwill Fundraiser. ALL items must be gently-used, clean and in working condition. Items that are acceptable are: Antiques/Collectibles Artwork & Frames Bedspreads/Blankets Books/CD s/dvd s/records** Clothing/Shoes (Infants-Adults) Cookware/Dishes Glassware Small Appliances** Sporting Goods Jewelry/Accessories ** All items must be in working condition. No furniture, medical equipment, exercise equipment, bicycles or automotive parts or liquids will be accepted. You may bring your items to the Consolata House on Saturdays from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM and Wednesdays from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM. You may also drop off your items from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM on Sunday. Also, if anyone is willing to help unload trucks bringing items across to the parking lot on 13th Street, please call Toni Bastian (951) Students who will be in the Confirmation program in the upcoming school year will receive service hours for helping. Our preschool offers a full and half day program for children that are 4 years old by September 1, 2014 (in accordance with the new State of California guidelines). Feast of the Assumption - 24th Annual Filipino-American Celebration The Filipino-American community of Corona, Riverside and neighboring cities will host its 24th Annual celebration of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Friday, August 15, at 6:00 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 877 N. Campus Ave, Upland. A rosary and procession will start off the celebration at 5:00 PM. Fr. Romy Seleccion will be the main presider. A dinner reception for all attendees will be held after Mass at the Parish center. Please come and celebrate this very special event. 6 Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 6 August 10, 2014 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the last several weeks, the history of confirmation has been set out as a rite following baptism and preceding First Communion. Eucharist was a sacrament of spiritual maturity, attuned to the legal age of majority, which was considered to be fourteen years or so. Medieval bishops were often generous, if not especially pious, in seeing to it that children were confirmed before adulthood. A pattern more familiar to us surfaced in the Diocese of Toulon in France in 1748, where it was decreed that children are to be confirmed only after receiving First Communion. This was an amazing shift in practice that undermined centuries of theology and tradition by which confirmation was seen as a bridge between font and table. The innovation swept through France and across Europe, despite constant complaints from Rome. French-trained bishops like Cheverus of Boston and Carroll of Baltimore, founders of the American church, established the practice here. The order of the sacraments was thus disrupted in France and in the United States and remained an eccentric exception to the rule until big developments in Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. GOD S WORD TODAY Where do we find God? Let s ponder this question as we prepare to listen to God s saving word today. After a long lonely journey in the desert, Elijah comes to a cave at Mount Horeb, where God promises to pass by. Imagine the Lord God promising that you, too, will soon discover God s very presence. Elijah discovers God not in the monumental occurrences around him, but in a tiny whispering sound. The disciples in today s Gospel are in trouble. Several miles from shore, their boat is being battered by stormy winds and the Lord Jesus is not in the boat. In the middle of this turmoil, they discover the Lord Jesus. Where do we find God? Today s scripture teaches us that God is present in the stillness as well as in the turmoil. Let us open our eyes, ears and hearts to discover God present in this holy place.
