2 A Letter from Father... Page 2 August 12, 2012 Oh, how Boring!! Our Gospel lessons over the past few weeks and for several weeks to come, focus on the Eucharist. Jesus said, I am the bread of life Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in you. These are powerful, mysterious words that point to the life-giving gift of the Eucharist. The richness of our Catholic Faith lies in the Eucharist. Many people have given their lives for their belief of the real presence of Jesus. At our Eucharistic celebration, we gather to hear God s word and to eat His body and blood. Truly amazing and awe-inspiring! For many, this is just ROUTINE! When we allow anything to become just routine, we tend to lose the importance of it and sadly, the whole meaning of it. Can you remember your First Holy Communion day? The many months of preparation were over; now, dressed in your First Communion attire, you very nervously processed down the aisle to receive for the very first time, the body and blood of Jesus. The pictures were taken, the party was celebrated and for awhile, the awe continued. For many, it has just become part of Catholic routine. It would be beneficial that we take time to reflect deeply on our Gospel lessons; to hear the words that Jesus speaks, This is my body. This is my blood. Eat this bread and you will have life in you. The bread that we eat in our Eucharistic celebration is the body and blood of Christ. It offers a different and true life: the life of the saved, of God s children. We are freed from the slavery of sin, from bad habits and dispositions. We have been fed and can walk in the light of God s truth. Allow your Amen as the response of the priest s The Body of Christ. Express your deep rooted faith. Make this a conscious response that renews your life in Christ. NEVER let this amazing gift of life-giving grace, the Body and Blood of Christ, become just a mindless, boring routine. Peace,

All parents are required to attend the MANDATORY Parent Meeting. If a parent cannot attend, another adult MUST attend in your place. The registration and parent meeting date will be on Sunday, September 16th. For students who will be in Confirmation I, II, or III, the parent meeting will be at 8:00am, September 16th. For students in grades Kindergarten through 8th Grades, the parent meeting will be at 10:00am (September 16th). Registration will take place after each meeting. If you are registering your child for the first time, you MUST bring a copy of their Baptism certificate. You may pay by check or with cash. If paying by cash, please bring the exact amount. So, if you re cleaning things out and find extra ribbon, buttons, card stock, glue sticks or anything of that nature, you can drop off the items anytime cards are being sold. Just a reminder. This Wednesday, August 15, 2012, is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION. 6 St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church Page 6 August 12, 2012 CIVIL DISCOURSE "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God." These words bring us up short! What could we be doing to grieve the Holy Spirit? Alas, the same things that the Ephesians were doing in the time of Paul, that is, fighting, shouting, reviling each other with fury, anger and malice. Just tune in to talk radio some day or observe some "road rage" on the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean about our belief in Christ's message of peace and reconciliation? The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity. It is communion with God and with each other. A good first step would be to speak civilly to each other, even in disagreement! Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The roots of this week's feast of the Assumption can be traced back at least to the fifth century, when it is noted in the Armenian lectionary. Celebrated in Jerusalem, the feast in honor of the Theotokos, the Mother of God, became the principal feast of Mary throughout the Christian world. The place of celebration was at the tomb of Mary in Gethsemane and was therefore known as the "Dormition of Mary." In some cultures this feast is celebrated today with a resting statue of Mary, much like a wake service of modern times. The liturgy of this feast provides images of "the place of your rest" in Psalm 132 and reverence for the Ark of the Covenant that held the signs of the Promise. Like that Ark, Mary is for us the ark of the Savior, the one who bore the Son of God. When the doctrine of the Assumption was defined in 1950 the Gospel reading for the feast was changed to include the verses of Mary's song, the Magnificat. The scripture readings for both the vigil Mass and the Mass of the day speak to us of life after death as well as the path to be followed in order to reach it. The key to this promised immortality is found as we take to heart the words of the vigil's Gospel, "Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it." James Field, Copyright (c) J. S.
