2 A Word from the pastor s But Jesus would withdraw to deserted places and pray. Luke 5:16 Many times throughout Jesus ministry, Jesus would take time out of the busyness of life to withdraw and pray. As summer has arrived, we know that many of you will be taking some time to withdraw as well. We hope that in your travels you will continue to find time to pray. We truly hope you will be renewed and refreshed in the Spirit. We hope you will also remember your Advent family as you continue to be good stewards We thank you all at Advent for your hard work and dedication throughout this past year. We have truly accomplished great things together in Jesus name. We will continue to the tradition at Advent where most ministries will take a break for the month of July. This has been extremely helpful to allow for our faithful servants to recharge, renew, and relax. After this time of reprieve, we are able to come back excited and ready to serve this fall and winter seasons. Because of this, we will only have one newsletter for June and July. Continue to look at your weekly This Week at Advent for updates, changes, and other ministry opportunities. However, before we get to July, we still have wonderful ministry opportunities in June. Synod Assembly is June 1-3 where Pastor Andrea, Pastor Jason, Zack Teffeteller, and Diana Perry will gather together with hundreds of others across our synod to gather in worship, prayer, workshops, and so much more while exploring the topic: Reformation 500 Now What? VBS this year is June 4 th -8 th. It will be an evening VBS from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Dinner will be included during this event. There are activities for Pre-K through 5 th grade. Middle school and High school youth are here to help lead and guide groups from one activity to the next. This year there will be an Adult Bible Study led by Pastor Andrea. We hope that both children and adults will come and join us this year for this amazing time together in God s Word. June 10 th will be VBS Sunday. The children, youth, and adults from VBS will share with us all, the themes, music, and biblical knowledge they learned during the week during our worship time together. Please plan to join us for this exciting worship opportunity. June 24 th we will install Advent s newest church council, Angie Hubble, President; Erin Taylor, Vice-President; Marcy Jimenez, Secretary; Steve Merzlak, Treasurer, and Diana Perry and Zack Teffeteller as Council Members at Large. We thank them for their leadership and service in God s name. June 24 th we will have a special blessing for our youth heading to camp. We have two youth going to Affirm, 5 youth and two adults going to the National Youth Gathering, and three youth going to Lutheridge. We pray that the Holy Spirit will fill them with God s love and strengthen their faith in the Lord. Wherever your travels take you this summer, may God bless you on your journey. May you do something different and unique. May you grow in faith as you take some much needed time of rest and renewal. And while you are enjoying your time away, please remember your church family in your prayers, but also in your continued generosity. Your continued stewardship during these summer months even though you may be away, continues to allow us to fund the ministry
3 that God has called each of us to here in this place. We truly thank our Lord for all the wonderful things God is doing here at Advent Lutheran Church. Let us pray, O God, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: Preserve those who travel: surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey s end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. [Adapted from the prayer for travelers in Prayers and Thanksgivings, The Book of Common Prayer (1979 edition).] In Christ s love, Pastor Jason and Pastor Andrea Pray for Healing & Provision: Marge Rahn, Edgar Bollinger, Tania Hayes, Mary & Art Suprek, Irmgard Crowder, Maggie Heaney, Ken Voss, Daisy Morgan, Ted DeVilbiss, Alice Glisson, Hilda Sullivan, Patty Williams, Mike Teffeteller, Suzanne Fouche, Shirley Chipman, Liza Fincher, Lee Hoops, Ramona Galloway, David & Betty Kadlewicz, Mable Plueger, Kathie Roper, Erika Larson, Virginia Reedstrom, Randy Lester, Otis Smith, Raquel, Diana Walker (friend of Hilda Sullivan), Bruce Carlton (brother of Melinda East s neighbor), Lily Tung, Judy Younce (Debbie Merzlaks sister), Charles Tanner (Marcy Jimenez's uncle), Richard Carey & Ann, his mother (Art & Mary Suprek' nephew), Gerry & Patti Meehan (Ken Voss' brother-in-law.) 6 Advocacy Ministry Expanding the Community Garden We had our first harvest from the Community Garden on Sunday, May 27! During the service, we blessed them and added them to the Little Free Pantry. If you haven t been out to see the garden you will be amazed at how much it has grown. Now we are getting ready to expand the garden. We are having a planning meeting on Sunday, June 3 after the service and everyone is welcome! We need to discuss and brainstorm what to do next. We could put in elevated and raised gardens, fruit bushes and trees, rain barrels, composters, sheds. We need advice from our experts and ideas from everyone. On June 16th, we will work on the expansion. We will meet from 9:00am 12:00pm with lunch included. As we did for Earth day, we need adults and kids. No experience is necessary. We will be building some more beds so some carpenters would be great. We will also have some inside service projects also if you are interested.
7 Service Ministry No Vacation from Hunger! GAP Ministries Food Pantry Needs YOU! When everyone is on vacation, food contributions drop dramatically, but the folks who come to GAP are just as hungry as in the winter. This year, Advent is holding a Food Drive to help sponsor the Food Pantry for one week this summer. Instead of monthly donations, we are asking for donations to help stock the Food Pantry for one week in July. What do we need? Canned Fruit Pasta and Rice Cans of Vegetables Canned Meats All items may be placed in the Food Pantry Donation Box by Sign-Up Central. Deadline for Donation is July 1 st. How many pounds of food can we collect? 50 pounds? 75 pounds? 100 pounds? Look for report in August Newsletter!
