2 Page 2 FROM THE PASTOR A Welcome is never forgotten Trick or Treat. My mother bundled me up warmly under my Batman costume. Yes I loved the caped crusader! My dark blue cape swirled in the night air as my friends and I ran from house to house. We jumped up on the porch and screamed, Trick or Treat!. Three Musketeers, Snickers, Whoppers, Baby Ruth, Zagnut, and Hersheys chocolate filled our bags! Some neighbors tossed in pennies, bags of potato chips---and all donations were accepted with a smile and a thank you!. My parents didn t follow us on the sidewalk. We never took our candy to the local police station to check for razor blades or straight pins. And we were out long past the hour the street lights came on! Different time. Different day. We were warmly welcomed by our neighbors---even those we did not know. The small brick house stood directly across my elementary school. The corner of Catalpa and Maxwell street. Two old (probably at least 50 ) people lived in the house. I never knew their names. Once a year, Halloween night, I was surprised by their welcome. The line formed at their door.while children and teens cried out, Trick or Treat ---this dear couple opened their home to young people. A warm smile greeted us at the door! Come in please!. She led us through the living room to the kitchen. Her husband stood near the stove dipping red delicious apples into creamy caramel. Take one apple. She led us through the kitchen to her back porch. Have a wonderful Halloween! Be Happy!. Ever year, the same gift-----a tasty caramel apple AND A WARM WELCOME. Forty five years later, I could show you the house. I have never forgotten. Why? The taste of those apples? No, the warmth of their welcome! Now, I am not recommending that you open your doors on October 31 st ----I am merely asking you to consider the warmth of your welcome. Will friends and neighbors remember you for the job you have, the car you drive, the lawn you maintain---or will they remember you for your WELCOME? Will your colleagues remember you for the hours you work, your pursuit of excellence on the job, your drive towards the top---or will you be remembered for the WELCOME you provided to your fellow workers? Will your classmates remember you for your fashionable clothes, the music you turn up each day, the girl or guy on your arm or for your WELCOME to the new boy or girl in school? Take an apple. Have a wonderful Halloween. Be Happy. 45 years later ----I have not forgotten their WELCOME. WELCOME During the month of October---we celebrate the grace of God which identifies us Lutherans! May we always be remembered for the WELCOME we extend as a Church! May our welcome to visitor and member, sinner and saint, be memorable and life changing! Peace. See you at worship! Pastor Matt

8 Page 8 Property Board Service Board The Adventurer Advent s Service Board continues to collect different items in support of various organizations and ministries. These items include plastic grocery bags, eye glasses (to include reading glasses), food items for the GAP Food pantry (especially canned meats and women s feminine hygiene products), hotel toiletries, popular paperback books, and winter coats. Anything you can help with is appreciated by the recipients. Donations can be placed on the Service Board table outside the adult Sunday school room or the wheel barrow in the Narthex. This year we will again sponsor an Angel Tree for children up to 12 years of age. This is a fun event and gives far more joy to the givers than words can describe. The registration begins in October, the tree goes up in November, and the presents are distributed in December. GAP food pantry continues to operate in spite of the heat and little or no air conditioning in the building. On an average your Service Board volunteers 50 hours a month. In support of Lutheran Services of Georgia Developmentally Disabled Adults Program, the Service Board has started a note or card sending project. Volunteers send each client a piece of personal correspondence each month. If you have any extra unused cards you would like to donate to this project, please drop them off on the service board table. Thrivent Financial Services has again donated $ with which to purchase food for the GAP Food Pantry, We are very grateful for their continuing support. INTERFAITH An Opportunity to Serve On October 2nd 9th Advent will host Interfaith guests. It's always a special time as we welcome these folks into our church which will become a temporary home for the week. What a joy to be able to help those less fortunate as our Father would have us do. The children that come to us through this program are always so ready to meet new people and become a part of our lives, and the children are what this programs all about; getting the parents back on their feet, and working and providing for their children. I cannot imagine not having food or a safe place to sleep or any of the other luxuries that we enjoy. There are still spaces to be filled on the sign up board in the Narthex! Please consider blessing our Interfaith guests!

9 Issue 8 Page 9 Property Board VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. As part of our commitment to Georgia Interfaith Power and Light, we need to have a Creation Care Team. The purpose of the team is to assist the church in identifying ways of conserving the resources the Lord has given us. It will require someone to head the team as well as several team members. They will work with the church on ways to conserve energy, as well as disseminate information which comes from Georgia Interfaith Power and Light. Once the team is established, two team members will attend two morning classes offered by Georgia Interfaith Power and Light this fall where they will receive instruction on how to carry out the duties of their team. The establishment of the team will enable the church to receive up to $25, in matching grants for energy improvements. Please consider this opportunity to help the church and reduce our energy costs. If interested, or if you have questions, please see Gary Lawrence, the Property Board Chair. Special Thank You THE SISTERS OF SAINT HELENA would like to extend a huge THANKS to everyone who donated clothing for them to recycle. They greatly appreciate the thoughtfulness and G o o d W o r k s o f t h e m e m b e r s o f A d v e n t L u t h e r a n!
