2 A Word from the Pastors " If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7 It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. 9 For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10 but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 What is the first thought that comes to mind when we think of February? That is right, Groundhog Day! Well maybe if you live in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania it might be the first thing we think of when it comes to February. However, for most of America, February brings with it thoughts of Valentine s day. Valentine s Day is a secular holiday that is set aside to help us show loved ones that we love them. So why is Valentine's Day such a central holiday in February? Because of one important word...love. The word love shows up 586 times in the Old and New Testaments. This does not include any variations on the word like the past tense loved or even the on going present action tense of loving. If we were to include these other variations, the number would probably be doubled. In the Greek there are four words for love, but they all have different meanings. One word is eros. This is how we get the work erotic. It literally means I love you because you have something I want. Another word is storge. This is parental love. It is the instinctual love that parent has for a child. Philio is the third kind of love. It is brotherly love like the name of the city Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love. The last one is Agape. This is unconditional love. Agape love is the opposite of eros love. Eros is love for the sake of the self, but agape is love for the sake of the other. Out of those 586 times love is used in the Bible, the two ways love is described biblically are philio and agape love. In 1 Corinthians 13, which is known as the love chapter, the main way love is used is through agape love. Love as seen through Jesus Christ. A love for the sake of others. St. Paul tells us at the center of agape love is patience and kindness. Agape love is not envious or boastful, arrogant or rude. It doesn't insist on its own ways and it does not rejoice in wrongdoings. Agape love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. This is perfect love. So how can we live up to this kind of perfect love? The answer is alone we can t, but in Christ Jesus we can begin to try. You see 1 Corinthians 13 is not an outline for perfect love, but it is an outline of God s love for us.
3 We know and believe this to be true because we have a God that has shown God s love for all creation through Jesus Christ. We see this most clearly in the love chapter of John 3 where we hear in verses 16 and 17 about THE perfect love: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 "Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3: This brothers and sisters is true love and it isn t reserved for just one day out of the year. This love is a love we hear and live in everyday of our lives because God has redeemed us in Christ Jesus. We live in this love and are called to share this same love as we love one another as Jesus first loved us. This kind of love has truly endured and will continue to endure. We know this to be true because of the final words of 1 Corinthians 13:13, Now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love!!! For that we say, Thanks be to God, now and forever! Amen. In Christ s love, Pastor Jason and Pastor Andrea Pastor s will be on Vacation February First Communion classes will begin in mid March. If you are interested in having your child participate in these classes please contact Pastor Andrea or Pastor Jason.

6 Let's Tackle Hunger Advent Youth are proud to announce that we are participating in the 2018 Souper Bowl of Caring! Souper Bowl of Caring uses the energy around our nation s largest sporting event to mobilize and inspire youth to fight hunger and poverty. Students collect food and raise money for charities that provide food to the hungry and compassion to those in need. For the month of February, we will take donations of canned goods. On Souper Bowl Sunday, February 3rd, you will have a chance to donate money and cheer on your favorite Super Bowl team. All canned good donations will benefit GAP Ministries, to help with hunger within our community. The money donations will be sent to the ELCA Good Gifts (See pg. 19) to purchase new tools or farm animals to help families. With new tools and techniques, crops will grow stronger than ever. Eggs, milk and meat from the farm animals provide a lifetime of food to eat and sell on the market, helping a family escape the cycle of hunger and poverty for good. We will then report our total to Souper Bowl of Caring so our students become part of the national efforts. And remember, the team that raises the most money will win the Super Bowl!! Help us make this year s goal a reality as we strive to beat last year s donation of $231. Please give generously on Souper Bowl Sunday, February 3rd!

11 Thank you are insufficient words for your donations to the Angel and Food Trees this 2018 Christmas Season. All 35 children and their 14 families received presents and a robust family meal. Special words of thanks go to the individuals who donated money that was put towards the purchase of turkeys and Nancy Tokarska purchased extra goodies to make the meals even more special by using her Thrivent Financial Services seed money. These families are for the most part, the working poor. Struggling pay check to pay check, to provide for their children. You are the reason this project was so successful, without your help, it would not have been such a wonderful blessing. We also give thanks to Pastor Jason, Peter Koehler and Juergen Jaath for loading and delivering the gifts and food to True Vine Missionary Baptist Church. On behalf of the Service Ministry of Advent Lutheran Church, THANK YOU. It was a pleasure working with the generous members of the church. See you all next year for our Angel and Food Tree project. Where does a portion of your monetary support to Advent s Service Ministry go? To the Richmond County Juvenile Justice System (JJS) Snack program. For nearly 10 years Advent has supported the JJS by donating snacks. Three times a year our church provides hot dogs, buns, condiments, potato chips, desserts and drinks to 60 youth who are enrolled in programs to address behavior issues. These children, identified by the Richmond County Juvenile court system as at-risk, have been court ordered to attend programs to deal with their anger, school and home behavior issues or being victims of a predatory sexual nature. They lack the financial resources to ensure they have something to eat after school, often there is little to no food in the family home due to do below-poverty level household incomes. This food may be all they have to eat after school and before their next meal at school the next day. Youth come to Saturday held Community Service with no lunch. By providing this food, the juveniles are able to be fed while attending these programs. It is hard to focus on changing life style and behavior when you are hungry. Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile program. Your Service Ministry is Moving! Effective February 10 th this ministry will meet after Worship at Church. For those attending Sunday School during the Service Ministry meeting, the minutes of the meeting will be posted on the Community Bulletin Board and sent to members of the Ministry via . COME JOIN. We welcome new ideas and hands and opinions on what YOU propose as new service projects. At the February 10 th meeting we will explore new ideas and projects for the September God s Work, Our Hands experience. Let s get started! SEE YOU THEN. Respectfully, Your Service Ministry. Linda Lawrence

19 Lutheran Services of Georgia is Now Inspiritus Same Services. Same Mission, Vision and Values. New Name. Lutheran Services of Georgia recently changed its name to Inspiritus. After reflecting on the organization s work and impact, the board of directors for Inspiritus believed the new name better embodies the essence of the organization s mission to guide individuals and families whose lives have been disrupted on a path from surviving to thriving. The new name derives from the word inspirit, which means to fill with strength or courage, and that is what Inspiritus does. Inspiritus helps individuals and families discover their inner strength and resilience, leading to a more fulfilling life. LSG s transition to Inspiritus was not a move away from its Christian roots and faith. Instead, the name intentionally references the Holy Spirit that guides its work and that lives inside of each person. In removing Lutheran from the name, the intention was not to distance itself from its Lutheran identity but rather to create a space where all feel welcome. Be assured that the services and programs offered will not change, and Inspiritus remains a part of the Lutheran Services in America network and a partner of Lutheran Disaster Response and Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. For more information on the change, visit
