2 6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philipians 4: 6-7 Sometimes you can t help but wonder if the people of God at Philipi worried as much as people worry today, especially when Paul says, Do not worry about ANYTHING. Many times this statement from Paul seems impossible. What do you mean, do not worry about anything? There is always something to worry about. Whether it is current events happening in the world or personal strife in our own lives or even the busiest time of the year for life activities... there can feel like a lot of opportunities to worry. When looking at The upcoming church calendar for October, details a lot of wonderful ministry that will be happening. However, sometimes in the midst of the busy-ness, we can t help but worry. We worry...will we have enough food? Will people show up for the event? Will we get enough donations? Will there be enough people to help at the event? Did we plan enough? What did we forget? The questions go on and on. Just look at some of the big events happening in October at Advent: A new ministry - the first Wednesdays Lunch + group Blessing of the Animals service Oktoberfest Trunk or Treat Advent is hosting the Joint CSRA Reformation Service All of these events, including our regular monthly activities, are truly exciting. However, all of these events take quite a bit of planning and preparation. We want it all to go well. We want those who participate to feel blessed beyond measure by being a part of such special events. We want members, visitors, and the surrounding community to feel God s love poured out and shared in abundance through these ministry opportunities. So what do we do when we begin to worry? St. Paul gives us the perfect answer prayer and supplication with thanksgiving. In the midst of current events, personal strife, and everyday busy-ness we are called to remember to pause and center ourselves in prayer. As we pray, we lift up all of our worries, concerns, hopes, dreams, and everything we can imagine and lay them before God. We then give God thanks for being a God who is active in our lives. We give God thanks for being a mighty God who loves and cares for God s people and God s creation.

3 We give God thanks and praise for all the wonderful people in our lives and especially those at Advent. We give God thanks for the gift of sharing in the ministry God has called us all to. We give God thanks! When we give thanks to God, we are centered and focused on what God is doing in and through our lives, and the life of God s church. It is then that we can begin to truly feel God s peace that passes through us beyond our understanding. God s peace then centers our hearts and minds on God who leads us forward. In the midst of this busy fall season, may we stop and pray together, give God thanks together, and may God s peace guard our hearts and minds, together, through Jesus Christ our Lord. In Christ s love, Pastor Andrea and Pastor Jason

13 Trunk or Treat this year with a few more treats!!! In October, Advent hosts one of our favorite events Trunk or Treat! It is a fun way to welcome the community. It is also one of the only ways some of the children will be able to trick or treat! This year we will have more treats! Of course, every trunk will have candy, but we are also participating in the Teal Pumpkin Project. The Teal Pumpkin Project is a national project to also hand out non-candy items from a Teal Pumpkin for kids with food allergies, diabetes and other special needs. The kids have a choice of a candy or a prize. Advent will supply the Teal Pumpkins and non-candy items for each trunk. Another new treat is Luna s Book Rescue. We have collected enough children s books so that each child will be able to pick a book out to take home. Trunk or Treat is Saturday, October 27 from 2:00pm 4:00 pm. Setting up will begin at 1:00. If you have never been, please consider coming we can even help decorate your car trunk! If you can t make it but would like to donate bags of candy or prizes (stickers, glow stick, small dollar store packs of toys) that would be greatly appreciated. This is such a fun event, come on out and join us!

18 God s Work. Our Hands. Projects - September 8th and 9th Advent was very blessed, and we were a blessing for many during our God s Work Our Hands Saturday and Sunday. It was a weekend guided and filled by the Spirit. On Saturday, over 50 members, family and friends work on 13 projects. Some worked all morning on a specific project, while others were able to work on many projects. On Sunday, we had over 40 people working on 9 projects. Those who could not be there, donated snacks and lunches for both volunteers and others. And like the loaves and fishes, our snack donations multiplied during the Saturday, so we seemed to have more than when we started. Projects were headed up by the fellowship, property, service and advocacy ministries. Our projects included trash cleanup at the Augusta Canal, Pendleton King Park and the Pass, painting at GAP Ministries, clearing brush and cleaning Advent s Playground and working in Advent s Community Garden. Inside activities included cleaning books for Luna s book rescue, packaging grits, rice, toiletries and diapers, cutting up magazines for art therapy collages, making cards for members and bracelets for Africa, cleaning and restocking Advent s Little Pantry, doubling grocery bags for GAP, making 50 lunches for Action Ministries and putting together autism bags. It was an amazing opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. May we continue serving our neighbor throughout the next year!

23 100 holes 1 day to fight homelessness 21st Annual Golf Marathon is October 29th! The Golf Marathon to support Family Promise of Augusta will be held October 29 th at The River Golf Club in North Augusta. We are so grateful to James Smith who will once again be out there hacking his way around the course. This marathon is the main fundraiser to meet the increasing needs of homeless families in our area. Family promise provides life skills, parenting classes, and serves as a link between guest families and local social service agencies. The children s daycare center provides a safe environment for homeless children. Family Promise also provides transportation to school, jobs, or interviews for a job. They provide transitional housing as a bridge to permanent housing. YOU can make a difference by a pledge to help Jim meet his goal. If you want to make a contribution please sign up in the Narthex. If you know of a business that might be willing to sponsor a hole please contact us. We appreciate your generosity in advance. Thanking you for all of your help, Nancy Tokarska co coordinator
