1 ST. MARY MAGDALEN Page 1 BRIGHTON, MICHIGAN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED CONGRATULATIONS! At the 9 am Liturgy on Pentecost Sunday, we prayed for the guidance of the Holy Spirit and then chose four new members for our Pastoral Council. The role of the council is to work with me to provide pastoral leadership to our community. On one hand, they provide 12 sets of eyes and ears to watch what is going on in our community and to listen to our people as they express their needs, concerns and hopes. The Holy Spirit chose Terri Banas, Mary Beth Potrykus, Jeri Gawlowski and Bob Metz. In addition, I asked the other nominees to serve on the other two councils that serve with me to provide direction to our parish. Dan Schifko has volunteered to serve on the Time and Talent Council. This group works to encourage our parishioners to share their time and talent with our community and the larger community through service. (This is the recruiter council!) Finally, I invited five other nominees to serve on our Finance Council. This council prepares our annual budget and monitors our expenditures throughout the year to make sure we are prudent, honest and wise in how we spend the finances entrusted to the parish. Along with the Properties Team they make sure our buildings and grounds are well cared for. The new members of the Finance Council are John Hammang, Ray & Sue Hlavarty, Jill Angell and Dan Hazen. Congratulations to all of you and thank you for your commitment to serve our community! THE HOLY LAND This fall, from Sept 18-30, Marilyn Pence Rhadigan and I will be leading a group to the Holy Land (with a stopover in Paris). The cost is $4,999 which covers the entire trip including all meals, tips and extra fees. The journey will allow for some extra time at some of the special sites and some free time in Jerusalem. For the first time we will also be going to Magdala and viewing the archeological digs that have uncovered the 1 st century town and celebrating Liturgy in the newly built church of St. Mary Magdalen which overlooks the Sea of Galilee. If you are interested, I invite you to pick up a brochure in the office. The final date to join the group is June 1! IS IT SAFE??? A question I am often asked, is it safe to go to the Holy Land? I assure you, I would never take anyone there if I had any concern for our safety. Our bus driver and guides will be Palestinian. Having been there five times (when things were more troubled than now) the Holy Land is the quietest it has been for years. It is safe to go! Fr. After predicting a drought which did, in fact, take place, God directed him to the pagan city of Zarephath. There, despite a severe famine, a widow provided food for him for a year. Today s reading picks up from there. Galatians 1: Galatia was a Roman province in central Turkey. Sometime after Paul had preached the Gospel there, other Christians came who insisted that to be a good Christian one also had to follow the Jewish law and be circumcised. Today s reading is autobiographical. Paul defends his teaching, pointing out that he did not receive the Gospel secondhand but directly from the Risen Jesus. Luke 7: This Gospel story reveals the nature of Jesus ministry and opens a window into the Kingdom he proclaims. In Luke s story, Jesus recognizes the need and invites himself into the widow s sorrow. Jesus tenderly reassures the woman do not weep and with his own authority, Jesus speaks the young man back to life. Reflect: What is the measure of confidence and trust you have in what Jesus can and will do for you?

I have one-time sessions topics or a series of topics if you are interested. Summer is a restful time if you want to include some faith-centered, get-together times with friends. A Mary Garden Simple and Symbolic Create this with a statue of Mary and your imagination for an indoor or outdoor display. The flowers and herbs of Our Lady are symbolic of her virtuous life. The Madonna Lily represents her purity; roses, the queen of flowers, represent Mary, the Queen of Heaven; marigolds represent Mary s simplicity and lavender recollects Mary s flight into Egypt with Joseph.
