Dear Parish Family, Mark's Gospel story of Jesus' encounter with the man seeking eternal life is essentially a vocation story (Mark 10:17-30). It is the only story in Mark in which the individual called responds not by following, but by going away. Why does this young man find the teaching of Jesus so difficult to accept? Religious Jews believed that wealth was a sign of God's blessing. Rich people were regarded as those God had blessed, and poor people were regarded as those God had cursed. The words of Jesus How hard it is for the rich to enter eternal life provoke astonishment among the disciples because of their apparent contradiction with the Old Testament concept that wealth was the divine seal of one s holiness. Since wealth, power, and merit generate false security, Jesus rejects them utterly as a claim to enter the kingdom. The negative outcome of the man's choice to walk away strikes a note of realism. It also attests the special power of possessions to hinder Christian discipleship. Jesus uses the rich man's departure as a teaching moment to instruct his disciples about the dangerous snare that earthly possessions, success and prosperity can have. Total detachment from one's possessions is required of every authentic disciple. Jesus saw the danger of material possessions. They can fix our heart to the world and make us think of everything in terms of price rather than value. Every Christian is challenged by the teaching of Jesus and the values of the society, which upholds the principle that worth really does come from material wealth; for example from the number of cars we own, the size of our homes, the amount in our investment portfolios. When capitalist systems are solely market-driven, heartless, and materialistic, they contradict the Gospel teachings of Jesus. The Gospel of Jesus challenges the "prosperity gospel mentality." Jesus is not speaking against material wealth, but condemns being enslaved to and enchained by wealth. It becomes a blessing when it is shared with others, and it becomes an obstacle and a prison for those who do not have the wisdom to share it with others. As Jesus looked at the rich young man, he looks at each one of us with love. He is reminding us to do "one thing more." We have to allow his loving gaze penetrate us to the core, and unlike the young man we must open ourselves to transform our lives, upset our values and rearrange our priorities. "While the poor of the world continue knocking on the doors of the rich, the world of affluence runs the risk of no longer hearing those knocks, on account of a conscience that can no longer distinguish what is human. God reveals man to himself; reason and faith work hand in hand to demonstrate to us what is good, provided we want to see it; the natural law, in which creative Reason shines forth, reveals our greatness, but also our wretchedness insofar as we fail to recognize the call to moral truth." 4 TODAY'S READINGS WORDS OF WISDOM The spirit of wisdom, as we discover in today's first reading, comes to those who pray for her. Wisdom, like the word of God, carries a message of consolation as well as of great challenge. The Letter to the Hebrews tells us that the word of God, infused with the wisdom of God, is "sharper than any two-edged sword." We cannot shrink from the wisdom of God, or from the word that has the power to penetrate our hearts and minds. Jesus, the living word of God, the embodiment of wisdom, has strong, deeply penetrating words for the rich young man who comes to him seeking answers to his most profound questions. Just when the young man thought he had done enough to fulfill God's commands, more was asked of him. 5 St. Francis of Assisi was impressed that Jesus Christ chose to be poor all his life: while being born in a stable, while as a preacher depending on the help of others, while being stripped of everything at his passion and death, and while remaining poor for us in the lowly forms of bread and wine in the Eucharist. Francis wanted to imitate Jesus literally. So, if Jesus was poor, Francis would become poor. We know that Francis grew up in a wealthy family in Assisi. His father owned a business as a cloth merchant, and he wanted Francis to learn the business. Francis did work at it for a while, but eventually he became more attracted to helping the poor, giving away lots of money to repair broken down churches, giving away cloth from the business to lepers. Slowly Francis became more distant from his parents and their way of life. Bernadone, the father of Francis, was worried that his son was wasting money and asked the Bishop of Assisi to make Francis come back to his senses. Both Francis and his father appeared before the bishop, and Francis decided to make a complete break from his father and what would have been his inheritance. Francis took off all his clothes and handed them back to his father. Francis then put on clothes of a beggar. Besides being like Jesus, why did Francis want to imitate His poor way of life? Francis experienced what material things, money in particular, could do to break up a family. He saw this when his father demanded that Francis stop giving away money earned from his business and return to work in the business. Money broke up his family. His father and he never seemed to talk to each other after the experience before the bishop of Assisi. We all have heard stories about how family relationships have been destroyed because of arguments over money. But Francis also observed that the constant search after more material things led to the drifting away from the search for God and it made it harder to share what one owned with others. The Bishop of Assisi thought that Francis and his early friars, who gave away all their possessions to enter his community, went too far in deciding to own nothing in this world. Francis responded to him: My lord, if we possessed any property, we should be forced to have weapons to defend it, since possessions are a cause of disputes and hatred and an obstacle to the love of God and neighbor. That is why we wish to have no property in this world. In the mind of Francis, Jesus had good reasons to live poorly during his public life since it allowed him to have time and energy to proclaim the values of the kingdom of God and invite people to bring those values into their own lives. Jesus had nothing that would interfere with having deep relationships with others. Francis simply wanted to be like Jesus; but he also saw the benefits of poverty which allowed him to concentrate completely on God and the Kingdom of God, and it placed no obstacles between him and his neighbor. All of us need material things. But we might spend time thinking about whether or not we feel like we need more material things even as we have plenty now. We might consider if we too worry we must protect and defend our possession against others. Possibly we can hear God inviting us to not be afraid to simplify our lives and be much more generous in sharing with others the way Jesus did. Have you seen how material things actually limit what you can do for others? How might you simplify your life?

La sabiduría, como la Palabra de Dios, lleva un mensaje de consuelo y a la vez constituye un gran desafío. La carta a los hebreos nos cuenta que la Palabra de Dios, que está empapada con la sabiduría de Dios, es "más penetrante que una espada de dos filos". No podemos acobardarnos ante la sabiduría de Dios ni ante la palabra que tiene el poder de penetrar nuestro corazón y mente. Jesús, la Palabra viva de Dios, la encarnación de la sabiduría, le dice cosas fuertes y muy penetrantes al joven rico que acude a Jesús en busca de respuestas a sus dudas más profundas. Precisamente, cuando el joven pensaba que había hecho lo suficiente para cumplir los mandamientos de Dios, se le exigió más. Lo mismo sucede en nuestro caso. Pre-baptismal meeting for parents is required. Godparents must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Generally Baptisms are celebrated the third Sunday of each month at 12:00 pm.
