Dear Parish Family, In recent weeks, the double theme of discipleship and the necessary reality of suffering for the Gospel has appeared regularly. Today s scripture texts each address this mysterious necessity yet again. In this Sunday s Gospel, we continue to read from the section of Mark s Gospel that reports Jesus journey to Jerusalem. Last Sunday we heard Jesus lament the particular challenges those with many possessions face in order to enter the Kingdom of God. Jesus then predicts his passion to the Twelve, who are amazed and afraid. In this part of Mark s Gospel, Jesus words to his closest disciples seem to be intended to prepare them for the events that will occur in Jerusalem. In today s Gospel text from Mark, we find James and John, the Zebedee brothers, completely missing the point of Jesus Gospel ministry. They are completely self-absorbed and self-serving. (In Matthew s Gospel s parallel, it is the mother of James and John, Mrs. Zebedee, who asks Jesus for this favor, also completely missing the point of his recent Passion Predictions.) Jesus points out, yet another time, and ever more clearly, that discipleship necessitates a willingness to embrace all that comes with preaching the truth, and ministering to sinners, including suffering of all sorts, even death. Of course, the jealousy this request for preferential treatment sparked among the other ten was both disappointing and bothersome to Jesus. He instructs the Twelve about how they must not be like the leaders among the Gentiles (meaning among non-believers). In our own day just as in Jesus day, people with power in any relationship can be abusive, both actively and passively. We are only recently as a society making ourselves increasingly responsible to be on the lookout for any abusive behavior (child abuse, spouse abuse, elder abuse, drug abuse, and all the other inappropriate uses of power, wealth, position, influence, trust, etc.) and then to take proactive steps to intervene in the abusive situation. This a very complex and difficult reality, but it stems for us Christians from Jesus imperative that we NOT be abusive like the leaders of the Gentiles. So, Church leaders whose loyalty to the institutional Church supersedes their loyalty to the safety and well-being of the Church members, risk being abusers of Church power. Persons entrusted with the money and wealth of others are at risk of mismanagement of the sustenance of others. Those who treat the Earth and our natural environment carelessly and recklessly (everything from roadside littering to causing oil spills and toxic waste contamination) abuse the Creation entrusted to us by God. Candidates for political office who spin the truth, who lie, who malign, who incite fear, who manipulate, who hate segments of the population and who pit one group against another, are themselves abusive who deserve not any of our trust or confidence. The list of examples possible goes on, but you probably already understand. Jesus explains the importance of service and sacrifice in the life of a disciple. In particular, he seems to be preparing the Twelve for their leadership roles in the emerging Christian community. Following Jesus example of sacrificial love continues to be countercultural in our day as well. We might take this opportunity to consider our models of authority and examine our own exercise of authority. On whose example do we model our leadership? Fr. Tom Kunnel. C.O.

4 TODAY'S READINGS TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: "Too much information!" We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don't want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in order. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it's about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John's outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been "too much information" for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can sometimes seem "too much" for us, is essential for our lives as disciples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in selfgiving service to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. READINGS FOR THE WEEK First Reading -- My servant shall justify many, and their guilt he shall bear (Isaiah 53:10-11). Psalm -- Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you (Psalm 33). Second Reading -- Let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help (Hebrews 4:14-16). Generalmente decimos esto cuando alguien nos da detalles sobre su vida que no deseamos o no necesitamos saber. Hoy, cuando Santiago y Juan le hacen una pregunta simple a Jesús y le piden ocupar lugares de honor en el Reino, Jesús podría haberles dado una respuesta simple. Pero, como suele hacerlo, responde una pregunta con otra pregunta, en este caso se trata de beber el cáliz del sufrimiento. Miles de personas se reunieron en la capital de El Salvador para celebrar la muerte del Arzobispo Oscar Romero, quien fue declarado santo. Campanas de la iglesia sonaron al unísono en todo el país y grandes multitudes miraron en grandes pantallas de video frente a la catedral de San Salvador mientras el Papa Francisco recitaba el rito de canonización de Romero y el Papa Pablo VI el domingo 14 de octubre. Pre-baptismal meeting for parents is required. Godparents must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Generally Baptisms are celebrated the third Sunday of each month at 12:00 pm. Reconciliation: Confessions are heard from 4:30-5:00 pm on Saturday. You may also make an appointment with Fr. Tom. Spanish confessions is available from 12:30 1:00 PM on Sundays. Marriage: Marriages should be arranged at least six months in advance. Participation in Pre-Cana is essential. Please call the Rectory to schedule an appointment with Fr. Tom.
