Eileen Keane, Msgr Robert Ford, Lois Holmes PLEASE ADVISE THE RECTORY ( ) WHENEV- ER A PARISHIONER BECOMES HOMEBOUND, ILL, OR HOSPI- TALIZED SO ARRANGEMENTS CAN BE MADE FOR A PRIEST, DEACON OR EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TO VISIT AND BRING This Second Sunday of Lent always has an account of the Transfiguration of Christ in the Gospel and the Great Promise to Abraham in the first reading from the Book of Genesis. These stories of faith take us deeper in to shaping our identity. This should clarify to us also our discipleship. The Book of Genesis in a foundational document for the Jewish people and for us who follow Jesus Christ. As we understand more this historical relationship of God with His People, the more we come to understand Jesus coming in the flesh to save us. The Book of Genesis is all about the beginnings of human beings not in a scientific way but in the way of faith. The story of Eden is our own story. The disobedience to God and the means promised to save us is all about our own life. Our faith teaches us that God loves this world so much that He never abandons us. Instead, God is always renewing His love for us and rescuing us from that which would destroy us. Our God reaches into time and history out of love, not with any intent to destroy us. God s way of loving is the real way of loving: always for the good of the loved one. God chooses a people to be His own, not because he rejects all other peoples but because His People have a special role to play in bringing salvation to all other people. So we have been chosen, not just for ourselves, but for the world as well. Abraham is among the first to hear this calling of the Lord. It is a call to follow the Lord, even when it seems impossible. Abraham, and then Sarah with Him, begin to follow God s plan, though at the outset it was not clear to them. Right away there is the Great Promise: Look up at the sky and count the stars, if you can. Just so, he added, shall your descendants be. The Gospel from Saint Luke gives an account of the Transfiguration. It was such a strange experience even for those who were present that Peter begins to talk about making tents! And the Gospel tells us that Peter did not know what he was saying. It was clearly such a strange and unusual experience that other Gospels even speak of Peter sort of being out of his mind! But the Transfiguration account is given today because the great voice from heaven speaks out, just as in the Baptism of the Lord: This is my chosen Son; listen to him. We will be also transformed. We will reach that stage of experiencing the joy of it is good to be here. Our present task is to listen to the Lord, whose words alone lead us on to life eternal. Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

5 Cooking Guide for LENT BROTH from SCRAPS During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, we are called to help one another and be merciful, as Jesus is for all of us. It is only with your help that the Cardinal s Annual Stewardship Appeal continues to be a beacon of hope for our brothers and sisters through our ministries and charities. Let us make a pledge today! Our help brings smiles to these children UNSCRAMBLE THE WORDS FIND A MESSAGE using the Letter in the ( ). R F E E H I T R O F P I E S T R U E P A E H W H Y H E A ( ) ( ) ( ) ( ) Clue: NOT TO BE GIVEN UP FOR LENT Answers are words from this week's readings Contributed by Jill Ammerman The message is :H O P E HEIFER, FIREPOT, EUPHRATES, YAHWEH Always wash vegetables and potatoes before cutting or peeling them. Use a zip lock bag or plastic container with an airtight lid to store in the fridge. "Scraps" are potato peels, carrot tops and shavings, onion peels, broccoli stems, celery tops and strings, bell pepper tops, tough asparagus ends, green bean ends, the central core of a cabbage. These are all things most of us just throw away. Using about twice as much water as vegetables, add a bit of salt, and bring them to a boil. Then turn the heat down to let the vegetable pieces simmer. After the vegetables have become very soft - about an hour - scoop out the vegetables and carefully pour the broth through a strainer. When cooled, the broth can be saved, even frozen in various sized cartons. It is remarkable what a powerful grace can come from choosing to save potato and onion peels. Saving these and other vegetable scraps can open up a place of deep reflection upon and solidarity with those in this world who have so much less than we do. It is so easy to use the broth from scraps as a base for a number of wonderful, quick, healthy soups. Just add some cooked rice or pasta or egg noodles, perhaps a tablespoon of tomato paste, thinly sliced and sautéed onions, some frozen vegetables or crushed tomatoes. Red beans or black beans that have been soaked over-night, or canned beans can be added to the broth. Barley or lentils can add another layer of flavor. A partially beaten egg can be drizzled into the boiling broth, for an egg drop soup. The soup can be further seasoned, for a variety of flavors, with garlic powder or grated ginger or crushed red pepper. Try any of these ingredients, or in various combinations, to add "substance" to our soup. When we pray our grace before meals, we can give thanks and praise to God for the blessings of this food that not only nourishes but also joins us to the less endowed humanity. PRAYER BEFORE MEALS Bless us O Lord, and these your gifts, which we are about to receive, from your bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
