Dear Parish Family, On this last Sunday in the Liturgical Year we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King. It is a good time to reflect on this most unusual king and his kingdom. The proclamation of the coming of the Kingdom dominated the preaching and teaching of Jesus. He taught his disciples to pray, Thy Kingdom come. (Matt. 6: 10) He told them to Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all of these things will be given to you besides. (Matt. 6: 33) He handed on this purpose to the apostles, Jesus said to his apostles: As you go make this proclamation: The Kingdom of heaven is at hand. (Matt. 10:7) What is this Kingdom of God? We hear and read this expression many times and seldom stop to think what it really means. The Kingdom of God is described for us in the first chapter of the Book of Genesis. It is a kingdom of holiness, justice and peace. Man is the Lord and Steward of this creation. Made in the image of God, man has an intellect and free will and is at peace with God, with himself and with all of creation. But this peace-filled creation scene is short-lived. Man is not satisfied he wants to be like God and so exercises this absolute independence and is banished from the Kingdom. God does not give up on humankind, rather brings good out it in a costly way. So in the fullness of time God sends his only Son, Jesus Christ to restore and usher in a new the Kingdom of God, a kingdom which is not of this world. The kingdom begins in this world but finds it completion in the next world. Since this Kingdom of God is not of this world Jesus describes it in worldly images understandable by human experience, in parables. Since we know spiritual things indirectly through our knowledge of material things, the parable goes from the known to the unknown, from the material to the spiritual. The parable is a story describing some ordinary occurrence. But it is a story that is told to convey to the hearer a higher, spiritual truth. In other words it is an earthly story with a heavenly ending. It is this heavenly ending which is the real meaning the teacher intends. Here are some parables of the Kingdom: The sower and the seed (Matt.13:3-23) the mustard seed (Matt. 13:31-32) the growing seed (Mark 4:26-29) the wheat and the weeds (Matt. 13:24-30) the pearl of great price (Matt. 13:45-46) the unforgiving servant (Matt. 18:23-35) the workers in the vineyard (Matt. 20:1-16) the wedding feast (Matt. 22:2-14) the rich fool (Luke 12:16-21) the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-30) Jesus is the King of this Kingdom. But He is a most unusual King; he is a crucified King. And from his royal throne on the cross he extends his royal invitation to his subjects. If anyone will come after me he must pick up his cross daily and follow me. In Baptism we have accepted this invitation. There are no states in this Kingdom that are more perfect than any other. Everyone is called to reach the potential that he has been given. It is a most unusual kingdom. The greatest in the Kingdom are the childlike. The weak conquer the strong, the foolish confound the wise and a camel gets through the eye of a needle, we add by subtracting and multiply by dividing because nothing is impossible with God and there is only one law: Love God and love others as Jesus loved. W hat a wonderful W ORLD! Fr. Tom Kunnel. C.O.

4 TODAY'S READINGS CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It's easy to understand today's scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus' words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he "has made us into a kingdom" (Revelation 1:6)--one people united in love and peace for all eternity. READINGS FOR THE WEEK First Reading -- One like a Son of man received dominion, glory, and kingship (Daniel 7:13-14). Psalm -- The Lord is king; he is robed in majesty (Psalm 93). Second Reading -- Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead (Revelation 1:5-8). Gospel -- For this I came into the world, to testify to the truth (John 18:33b-37). 11/18 Will be Reported Next Week Will be reported next time Volunteers Wanted for the Greatest Story Ever Pageant: Sunday, December 16. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Saturday: Rv 22:1-7; Ps 95:1-7ab; Lk 21:34-36 Sunday: Jer 33:14-16; Ps 25:4-5, 8-10, 14; 1 Thes 3: :2; Lk 21:25-28, It s a pot luck evening, so bring something to eat so we can eat before we make merry. Bring something simple finger food /desserts/wine. Then let s fill the hall with the sound of Christmas!!

5 We believe the kingdom is already here. Not just in heaven, or in the future, but here and now. Christ s kingdom has come and is coming. There s a phrase in Catholic theology and spirituality: already and not yet. Pope John Paul II, among others, used that phrase. Christ s kingdom is already; Christ s kingdom is not yet. Christ reigns on earth already; Christ reigns on earth not yet. The not yet part is easy to see. Where does the already come in? There s a famous remark from a Modernist priest named Alfred Loisy: Jesus came proclaiming the Kingdom, and what arrived was the Church. Maybe his remark was a little like those T-shirts that say I went to XYZ and all I got was this lousy T-shirt. Loisy may have been disappointed. But look at Jesus parables explaining what the kingdom is like: It s like a mustard seed growing in a field, the smallest of seeds, but it grows larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree for all the birds of the air to nest in. It s like leaven, like yeast, that a woman mixed with three measures of flour until the whole was leavened. The kingdom is a work in progress, but Christ has begun to reign on earth in the Catholic Church. Vatican II calls the Church the kingdom of Christ now present in mystery. And of course there s good and bad in the Church. Jesus kingdom parables talk about that too. The kingdom is like a man who sowed good wheat in his field, but while men were sleeping an enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, so that the wheat and the weeds grew up together. And the man s servants said, shall we root out the weeds? And the man said, no, you might tear up the wheat along with it. Let them both grow together till the harvest, and the reapers will sort them out. Again, the kingdom is like a net thrown into the sea that catches up fish of every kind, bad fish as well as good fish, which the men take ashore and sort out, keeping the good but throwing away the bad. There are good fish and bad fish, or as we might say good apples and bad apples, in the Church. The Church is the kingdom already and not yet! Christ the King reigns on earth in the Church already and not yet, because Christ is still suffering in his Church wherever his Church is persecuted, as it is today in so many places around the world, especially in the Muslim world, but also in other places including India and China. Here in the Western world, including the United States, we ve seen some eroding of religious liberty, though nothing to compare to the persecution of Christians around the world. And of course Christ s kingdom is not yet because we are sinners. Whenever we lie, or hold a grudge instead of forgiving, or indulge in envy or resentment over what others have instead of being grateful for what God has given us, or look at someone lustfully, whether in real life or on a screen, or give in to needless worry and anxiety instead of trusting God, Christ s kingdom is not yet. We re living as if Caesar is Lord and not Jesus. Whenever we form or take part in cliques or factions or tribes of any kind and close our hearts or our minds to people outside our group, whether we look down on them, scorn them, hate them, or simply don t care about them, Christ s kingdom is not yet. The mustard seed grows into a tree for all the birds of the air to nest in not just the ones who look like us or talk like us or think like us. The Church, the kingdom of Christ now present in mystery, exists as God s means of calling all of humanity to union with himself and of gathering together the human race into one, of breaking down all the tribal walls that divide us into separate camps: Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female; black, white, Hispanic, Latino, Asian, African, Middle Eastern; rich, poor, blue collar, white collar, uptown, downtown; Latin Mass, English Mass the list goes on and on. There s nothing necessarily wrong with all of these tribes only with the walls we put up against each other. Walls between tribes are part of the kingdom of Caesar, not the kingdom of Christ. In the kingdom of Caesar, people who are different are treated differently and there s injustice and it s important to understand that and resist it. But in the kingdom of Christ, none of those boundaries is supposed to matter; we re all brothers and sisters, no matter what other tribes we belong to. That s why the Church is called Catholic, which means universal. That doesn t mean no differences matter. It certainly matters whether you re in the kingdom, in the Church, or outside it. Those inside the Church are our brothers and sisters. Those outside the Church are our neighbors, and we re called to love and serve them, to see them as potential brothers and sisters. And even in the Church there are good fish and bad fish, wheat and weeds. That s another difference that matters. But it s not up to us to separate them out. Christ will do that. May God give us the grace to live more and more as subjects of Christ the king and not Caesar, to live more and more in the already and less and less in the not yet. Thy kingdom come. Amen.
