Mark in his Gospel narrative of the healing of the blind man, takes pain to tell us where the miracle took place, the name of the person and the circumstances that finally led to the miracle. Jericho is fifteen miles from Jerusalem and Jesus is on this final journey to enter it in triumph. Bartimaeus (son of Timeus) knows who Jesus is, 'the expected Messiah, son of David.' The account combines features of a miracle story and a vocation narrative. Bartimaeus is one of the few people cured who is identified in Mark; he was seemingly well known in the Christian community of Mark. Beggars were given scant notice on the roadside. Bartimaeus calls to Jesus twice after first being silenced. This underscores his persistence in faith. The sight that Bartimaeus receives is obviously physical. But for Mark's readers it is meant to be seen on a deeper level. Biblical blindness is frequently identified with lack of faith, and sight with faith itself. Jesus brings out the faith dimension in his final statement. Faith not only "saves" from physical blindness; it saves from eternal death as well. The man now deepened in his convictions follows Jesus "on the way" to Jerusalem with his disciples. The "way" of Jesus and of his followers is one that inevitably leads to Jerusalem and suffering. Bartimaeus has passed from a suppliant to a disciple, from a beggar to a respected member of a community and from the danger of being overlooked to a life of faith and favor. In our contemporary society there are any number of people who are overlooked. They may be homeless, unemployed, elderly, institutionalized, or disadvantaged in some way. In addition, there are people who are lackluster, dull and uninteresting. It is so easy for us to look past people. It is amazing to think of the number of people who enter and exit our life, and how many of them go largely unnoticed. But how we brighten up in the presence of people of means, stature, or influence! We have all the time to wait long hours to catch the glimpse of a celebrity and 'no time' to greet a 'stranger.' Jeremiah places pregnant and unescorted women and the people who today might have wheelchairs and canes in the front line of the post exilic triumphant cortege. And how sensitive Jesus was to those on the side lines of the society of his time! Whether it was an old and bent woman who touched his clothes, a mother on the way to her son's burial, a short and unimpressive Zacchaeus scurrying up a tree, or a rejected woman slapped with immorality, no one was overlooked. In reaching out to Bartimaeus, who could scarcely make himself heard, Jesus gave a man sight-and gained a disciple. Our high priest stands before God on our behalf. We have a mighty intercessor but also a very human one-one who understands what it means to fail, to become disheartened, to be tested, even to be rejected in favor of the common criminal Barabbas. On the streets of Jerusalem, he became the humanity that was 'disrespected in the extreme'. Jesus knows what it means to be overlooked and be the underdog. And in our dealings of every day, he asks us to remember just that, 'to see HIS FACE in every face that we want to avoid'. Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

Fr. Tom made the children feel right at home in their Father s house. Rick, our music man, was in top form and all of our kids were great. There were 214 people, big and little, to participate in the celebration. Our next FAMILY MASS will take place on Sunday, November 22nd at 10:30 AM. Chris and Carolyn Yates will provide the music as Rick will be celebrating his father s 90th birthday. UPCOMING SPECIALS May Pang is planning a wonderful event for the youngsters on SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1st during class time Saint WAX MUSEUM. Stop by to see the kids in grades 3 and up dressed up as their favorite saints and be amazed by the knowledge they have gathered about each one. Fr Tom has invited grades 6, 7 and 8 to a special Mass to celebrate ALL SOULS on MONDAY, NO- VEMBER 2nd at 6:30PM. Everyone is welcome to join in, moms and dads, brothers and sisters as well as everyone else who is interested. The kids are encouraged to bring pictures of loved ones who have passed. They will be posted on a board for all to see and be remembered in prayer. Parents please note that the children will go home after Mass (around 7.15 PM). Pope Francis. Come and be a part of this night, where the Cathedral will be have its doors open to all New Yorkers so they can come, pray, and love the Lord. The Parish Council is currently looking for three members to join the team. As a parish council member you will represent the parish. The responsibility of the Parish Council is pastoral planning, developing pastoral programs, improving our parish services, evaluating the pastoral effectiveness of various programs and services in our parish. Although the Council does not make any final decisions, that is left to Fr Tom, the recommendations of the Council are taken seriously and anyone who volunteers for the job should likewise be sure that he or she can attend the meetings. The meetings are usually the last Thursday of the month. We hope you will consider this very important ministry. If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to any of current Parish Council members. Our next Parish Council meeting is Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7:15. Pre-baptismal meeting for parents is required. We require all Baptismal families to be registered at St. John s. Godparents must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Generally Baptisms are celebrated the third Sunday of each month at 12:00 pm. We celebrate Reconciliation: Confessions are heard from 4:30-5:00 pm on Saturday. You may also make an appointment with one of the priests. Spanish confessions is available 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month and from 12:30 1:00 PM on Sundays. We celebrate Marriage: Marriages should be arranged at least six months in advance. Participation in Pre-Cana is essential. Please call the Rectory to schedule an appointment with one of the priests. We celebrate Anointing of the Sick: Planning to enter the hospital for elective surgery or other serious treatment, and for those who have need of spiritual healing. In an emergency, call the Rectory at any time. Although the cross still stands the interior of the church was gutted. The cross was installed on the tower the year before to replace the cross that had served the church since the the turn of the century. Shortly before midnight, a giant 85-foot crane was moved into the side yard of St. John s 29 May 1962 Church to tackle the job of tearing down the bell tower which menaced the pedestrians and vehicular traffic. This bell now sits in front of our entrance. We celebrate Holy Orders: Any gentleman interested in exploring the question of vocation to the priesthood or the permanent diaconate should contact Fr. Tom Kunnel. We would also be happy to direct anyone interested in living their lives as Religious Sisters or Brothers. We celebrate the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults: We welcome you to full membership in the life of the Church. The instruction for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist for adults. If interested please contact Dcn Robert Pang. Parish Registration: All adults (over age 21) should register in the parish themselves and should use envelopes or parishpay.com. Tithing is 5% of income. This registration is our only means of certifying anyone as a member of the parish, especially for Baptism and Confirmation sponsorship letters and for scheduling Baptisms and Weddings.
