One of the favorite quotes of Pope John Paul I, the ever-smiling Pope who reigned only a few weeks, is God is our father, but even more is God our mother. Was he influenced by the words of Isaiah, As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you? The image vividly described in our first reading, suggests a privileged intimacy, a wondrous dependency, even a child s first ecstasy. Have you ever seen a nursing babe, arms outstretched and lost in speechless delight? Is that what Isaiah was getting at? Is that how God is to us? Though we live in a time when some mothers abandon children or even end their lives for some ungodly reason, there is something deep in us that says, if we cannot trust a mother s love, what else is there we might trust? If the God we worship is imaged in a mother s love, how could we ever fear peril? How could our deepest heart s desires not be met? Even in the midst of threats or most painful relinquishments, we need not worry. Fear has no place where love abounds. Every child and every child of heart knows it. In this great trust, peace will flow like a river. Peace, in the final analysis, means oneness with God s will. The search for peace must begin with individuals like you and me, then radiate out to family, community, nation, and world. The peace filled person becomes a missionary! Jesus advice that one isn t to greet anyone along the way isn t to mean a cold unfriendliness, but a reminder that there is a seriousness and an urgency about seeking and spreading peace; we must not indulge in distractions, but get on with the work. Jesus further advises that his missionaries for peace take no walking staff, travelling bag, or scandals this to dramatize one s willingness to trust in God s providence. The person then becomes vulnerable, making it possible for God to work through our vulnerability. How does this apply to Christians (then and now) who live in town and hold down a steady job? The missionary charge to the 72 suggests that even followers of Jesus who are registered voters with a permanent address should be people who travel light, live a little more trustingly than the culture around them, and exhibit a sense of purpose that clearly goes beyond producing and consuming goods and getting entertained. Even settled Christians can live in a way that invites questions about where such people are coming from and where they think they are going. The man, woman and their life style becomes a message! We are the only GOSPEL that most people will ever encounter in their life. Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

I come to say that we need some kind parishioners to step up and help in our Religious Education Program for the coming year. We need Catechists, Subs and Helpers. We are losing three Catechists who have been with the program for a combined total of thirty years. Their children long ago completed the program, but these ladies continued to give of their time and effort to your youngsters. Now, they must move on to pursue other interests. We thank these special women, but WHO WILL TAKE THEIR PLACES? We need a Co-Teacher for 2nd Grade, a Teacher for a small 6th Grade and an additional Teacher for 7th Grade as well as a Helper for Monday evenings and a couple of people to sub when needed. Please don't think that someone else will step up to the plate. WE NEED YOU. This fund supports pastoral projects in a place that is often marked by division and tension. With so many people in Africa on the move, providing pastoral care to meet their spiritual needs is often difficult. Creating fellowship among various groups, ethnicities and tribes is crucially important in order to avoid tribalism, discrimination and racial violence. Thank you - ASANTENI Gentle Reader, The sacrament of reconcilia on, formerly known as confession, is probably one of the most unknown, undervalued, and underes mated sacraments we have. The Catechism of the Catholic Church now groups the seven sacraments into the sacraments of ini a on (bap sm, confirma on, Eucharist), the sacraments of healing (reconcilia on, anoin ng of the sick), and the sacraments at the service of the communion (holy orders and matrimony). In its discussion of the sacrament of reconcilia- on, the Catechism suggests five different names for the same sacrament: conversion, confession, penance, forgiveness, reconcilia on. In a way, these five names refer to the different stages a person goes through when preparing for and cele-bra ng the sacrament. First, we need to realize that certain thoughts and ac- ons are harmful to ourselves and the community and thus harm our rela onship with God. Second, we name our sins before God, in the presence of a priest. Third, we express our willingness to repent for the sins commi ed and to do penance to make amends. Fourth, God heals us from our sins through the absolu- on spoken by the priest. Fi h, true conversion, confession, and pen-ance lead to forgiveness and reconcilia on with ourselves, with the church, and with God. Ordinarily, this sacrament is celebrated pri-vately between the confessor and the person mak-ing his or her confession. The rite is very simple: a er the sign of the cross and the gree ng, the priest proclaims a brief passage from Scripture. A er this, the penitent confesses his or her sins to the priest. In response, the priest may give advice and suggest some form of sa sfac on, which most o en consists of prayer, fas ng, or giving of alms. Then, the penitent prays for forgiveness. The priest absolves the penitent from his or her sins and to-gether they give praise to God. I suggest you make an appointment with your priest and schedule your next confession. Do let him know it has been a while. I am sure he will be happy to navigate you through the sacrament. Also, most parishes have prayer cards available in their reconcilia on chapels so you need not worry about knowing those by heart. Cuando le damos la paz a la persona que está cerca de nosotros en la Misa, compartimos el roce de un apretón de manos o un abrazo, el contacto visual sincero y palabras amistosas. Las Escrituras hablan de una paz similar. Pre-baptismal meeting for parents is required. Godparents must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Generally Baptisms are celebrated the third Sunday of each month at 12:00 pm. Reconciliation: Confessions are heard from 4:30-5:00 pm on Saturday. You may also make an appointment with Fr. Tom. Spanish confessions is available on 1st Fridays of the month at 7 PM and from 12:30 1:00 PM on Sundays. Marriage: Marriages should be arranged at least six months in advance.
