Jesus is led by the spirit into the desert not primarily to be tempted, but for prayerful communion with his heavenly Father. The desert had a strong attraction for the Israelites. They had been close to God when they had wandered through the desert during the Exodus. They had encountered God in the desert around Mt. Sinai, where God had given them their revered Torah. Desert is a physical space with very little distractions and attractions. It is also a place where one s vulnerability and inadequacy is exposed. During the sojourn of the people of Israel they also fell into idolatry, wooed by the pagan tribes that lived around them. It is very interesting to note all the replies that Jesus gave to the devil is taken from book of Deuteronomy, especially the portion that deals with desert journey of Israel. Temptation is a part of human life. With Jesus as with all of us, temptations are also tailored to our personal condition. His in particular at this time, were appeals to the basic drivers within all of us for security (bread), for power (kingdoms), and for recognition and fame (jumping from the Temple summit). Jesus is taking on the human nature with all its power and weakness. We all can identify with this Jesus who is beset with temptations. He teaches us how we can rise above the influence of the devil. Human refusal to respond to God s invitation is described in biblical terms as sin, the misuse of human freedom. We are familiar with the story in the Garden of Eden. One of the ironies about belief in the reality of sin is that it s tied in with belief in human dignity. To believe in sin is to believe in human freedom and personal responsibility. Whenever we seek to avoid responsibility for our behavior, we re trying to give away our power to some other entity, be it a person, or fate, or society, or the government, or our work-place boss or even a legal court that lacks moral grounding. Lent tells us to treasure our basic baptismal values in the face of temptations, as Jesus did. Detachment from possessions, avoiding compromises and holding firm to challenges rather than live fake lives. With God s grace, we too can walk with strength when the road is potholed with temptations. Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

5 Cooking Guide for LENT Rice and Beans One of the easiest and simplest meals that can place us in solidarity, in even a symbolic way, with much of the poor of the world is Rice and Beans. This meal is healthy, nourishing and filling. Praying with its preparation and eating it feeling humble and honored to share it with our sisters and brothers in so many countries - can be a great source of devotion for us and our families. Preparing rice and beans is very simple. In its most basic form, a variety of dry beans can be soaked overnight (itself a reflection on our "dryness" and our need for "living water" to be restored). A variety of ingredients are optional, but not necessary, to add different flavorings and cultural leanings to the beans. It is common to sauté onions and garlic in a pot, and simply to add the beans along with enough water to cover them. This is brought to a boil and then let it simmer for an hour. This is served over a generous bed of rice. The rice is easily prepared by putting a cup or two of rice in a pot, with twice as many cups of water, and a touch of salt. This is brought to a boil and then reduced to a simmer for minutes, depending upon the type of rice used. Other ingredients: Along with the onions, any of the following can be sautéed and added in a variety of combinations. Sliced peppers - sweet or hot whole or crushed olives chopped cilantro diced tomatoes a variety of uncooked pastas or barley If prayer is "raising our minds and hearts to God," and being in a relationship with God, then anything can be prayer. And preparing a meal can certainly be a wonderful prayer. And, if our cooking is for our family or others with whom we live, then it can be a great act of love. JESÚS Y EL DEMONIO Como nos recuerda el Evangelio de hoy, el demonio tentó a Jesús con citas de la Sagrada Escritura: haz un milagro que te convenga. Véndete. Pre-baptismal meeting for parents is required. Godparents must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Generally Baptisms are celebrated the third Sunday of each month at 12:00 pm. Reconciliation: Confessions are heard from 4:30-5:00 pm on Saturday. You may also make an appointment with Fr. Tom. Spanish confessions is available on 1st Fridays of the month at 7 PM and from 12:30 1:00 PM on Sundays. Marriage: Marriages should be arranged at least six months in advance. Participation in Pre-Cana is essential. Please call the Rectory to schedule an appointment with Fr. Tom. Anointing of the Sick: Before you enter the hospital for elective surgery or other serious treatment, and for those who have need of spiritual healing. In an emergency, call Fr.
