As a Parish Family, let us remember in our prayers all our beloved departed members of our Parish Community, Angelina Benicasa, Frank Walsh, Nelida Cortes, Joseph Iorio, father of Lee McGarvey, Ken Melia, Angelo Mercurio, Michael K. McGuiness, Jr., Michael K. McGuiiness, Theresa (Patti) Veen, John McCann, Charlie Card, Beverly Pane, Francis Cooney, Sr., Nicholas Bruni, brother of Marge Olsen, Patrick McQuaid, brother of Helen Bark, Eleanor Jurasek PLEASE ADVISE THE RECTORY ( ) WHENEVER A PARISHION- ER BECOMES HOMEBOUND, ILL, OR HOSPITALIZED SO ARRANGE- MENTS CAN BE MADE FOR A PRIEST, DEACON OR EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TO VISIT AND BRING COMMUNION TO THEM. Dear Parish Family, In today s Gospel Jesus makes three objections: the Pharisaic scribes do not practice what they preach, they adopt a very narrow and burdensome interpretation of the Torah, and they seek public acknowledgment. Jesus exhortation to do what the Pharisaic scribes teach is a compliment to their expertise. They know the Scripture and interpret it well. Sadly, Scripture is not the script by which they live. This is why Jesus calls them actors (the literal translation of the Greek word usually rendered hypocrites, a word Jesus uses repeatedly when talking about the Pharisees). Jesus discourages imitating these actors. Recall that some Pharisaic scribes distinguished heavy or serious commandments and light or less serious commandments among the 613 they identified in the Torah, while others did not. In Jesus day, each approach was represented by a famous teacher and expert in the Torah. Hillel typically favored a broad interpretation, while Shammai typically favored a strict or narrow interpretation. Strict interpreters laid heavy burdens on others and refused to lighten the burdens by means of a broader interpretation of obligation. Everyone in this culture needs to be seen and affirmed publicly in order to have status or honor. Jesus complaint therefore concerns excess in the search for recognition and acclaim. Imagine the excess that must have characterized the Pharisees phylacteries and cloak fringes if Jesus charge is to make sense to his listeners. Jesus taught his followers to address God as Father (Mt 6:9). The point quite simply is that Jesus disciples ought not to engage in an allconsuming search for honor by selecting titles, like father that they may not deserve. This passage has no relationship at all to the modern practice of addressing ordained male priests with the title father. The Catholic priest is ordained to continue the loving work of the Father. His fatherhood comes from God and must point to God. I am called father because the mandate of the Sacrament of Holy Orders is to make the Father s love real for His people. When I don t do that, then I don t deserve to be called father. Matthew 23 isn t just about priesthood, though. It is about how all of us use our position in the Church. We all have authority, some as priests, some as teachers, some as parents, some as catechists, etc. Many of you are parents. Do you parents demand that your children respect you because you are on an ego trip and want someone in the world to look up to you? Not if you are good parents. If you are good parents, and you are, you demand that your children respect you as the representative of God in this stage of their lives. You also want them to learn respect for all those whom God has given any form of authority. The same message can be applied to all of us in whatever share of authority the Lord has given us. Most of us are confirmed. That means that we are given positions of leadership in the Church. The basic message of today s gospel is that everything we do must be about Jesus Christ, never about ourselves. We have to understand that we are His servants. Our priests must manifest God s fatherhood, not their own fatherhood. Our teachers are part of the teaching ministry of Christ, and are teaching for his glory, not teaching for their own glory. In all things, God must be exalted. If that means at times stepping back while another continues the Work of God more effectively than we can, so be it. It is better to humble ourselves and be exalted by God then to exalt ourselves and be humbled by God. Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

4 TODAY'S READINGS THE GREATEST AMONG US Whom do you admire? Is it the President of the United States or a movie star or a billionaire? These are people whom the world exalts as great. Like the Pharisees in today's Gospel, they have places of honor wherever they go. Would you like to follow in their footsteps? The scriptures for today offer different examples for us to follow. Jesus tells us that the greatest among us are the servants. These are the people we are to honor and imitate. We are called to be like Paul, who worked hard to serve the needs of his communities, and Jesus, who gave his life in service to the world. First Reading -- Do we not have one father? Did not the one God create us? (Malachi 1:14b -- 2:2b, 8-10). Psalm -- In you, Lord, I have found my peace (Psalm 131). Second Reading -- You have received not a human word but the word of God (1 Thessalonians 2:7b-9, 13). Gospel -- Call no one your father on earth; you have but one Father, the one in heaven (Matthew 23:1-12). The Outreach Ministry is beginning their annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive this weekend. 5 REMEMBERING OUR DEAR DEPARTED The great mysteries of life and death are at the core of all that lives. We journey in and out of these mysteries in the time dimensions of the past, the present and all that is to come. Today, we remember the women, men and children in our lives who have been re-claimed by God, but whose life force is still very much alive in us. Turkey or turkey breast Rice Beans (white, red, black) Corn (2-15oz cans) Green vegetables (2-15oz cans) Juice Coffee/Tea Fresh potato (white or sweet) Stuffing Cranberry sauce or apple sauce Candy, mints or nuts Cookies Spaghetti and sauce Peanut butter Surprise Item Bring all items to Connelly Hall 11/18-19 before/after all Masses. Pavo o Pechuga de Pavo Frijoles (blancos, rojos, negros) Maize (2-latas de 15oz.) Vegetales verdesa (2-latas de 15 oz.) Jugo Café/Te Papas frescas (blancas o Patatas dulces) Relleno Fruta en lata o salsa de manzana Salsa de cranberry Dulces, menas o nueces Gelatina o pudin Alguna sorpresa Por favor traigan todo a Connelly Hall el fin de samana de 11/19 How long ago they may have lived does not diminish the bond that connects us to them and upon whom we draw inspiration, courage and strength. The life force of all that has ever lived surges through us, and our life journey on this earth is an invitation for us to add our own unique measure of grace to this powerful force of life. Soul is defined as the principle of life (Oxford English Dictionary) and today, the Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed (All Soul s Day) is a time to remember and celebrate that life force. A number of years ago I was in a neo-natal intensive care unit with the parents of a very sick new born infant. It was close to midnight, all the lights were dimmed and the infants were sound asleep amidst the muffled sounds of monitors and machines that were keeping them alive. At one point, a tiny, quiet beep sounded that only the nurses recognized as a signal that one of the babies had just died. Suddenly, every child in that specialized unit was awake, restless, whimpering and/or crying. The nurses explained that the life force that connected all these very ill babies was so real that the death of one was felt by all the others in some mysterious and profound way. The only way the babies would settle down and return to sleep was to go from one incubator to another and physically touch whatever part of their little bodies was exposed and rub a hand, a face or a foot. We helped do that and the restlessness ceased and the whimpering stopped and soon all was quiet once again. I have thought of that experience very often and for me, it clearly and dramatically shows that we are bonded to one another in deep and mysterious ways and although, through death, life takes a different form, death cannot sever that bonded-ness. Today s remembrance is a marker during the liturgical year to enable us to celebrate our connection to the principle of life and consequently, our profound connection to one another. It is an invitation to celebrate that powerful bond that lives within us that was strengthened by those we loved who have been re-claimed by God. Everyone who has gone before us throughout the ages, everyone we have loved, and who have loved us in return have added their unique touch to that life force coursing through our veins. John has a phrase in today s Gospel that he attributes to Jesus And this is the will of the one who sent me that I should not lose anything of what God gave me This day we remember, and we celebrate because we believe. by Sr. Anne-Louise Nadeau, SNDdeN
