In today's Gospel Lesson we have the familiar Widow's Mite story. Jesus sits near the Temple Treasury and watches the people putting money into Treasury. Many of the rich put in a great deal, Mark tells us. Then, a poor widow puts in two small coins, the equivalent of a penny -- everything she possessed, all she had to live on. Seeing this, Jesus says to His disciples, I tell you solemnly, this poor widow has put more in than all who have contributed to the Treasury; for they have all put in money they had over, but she from the little she had has just put in everything she possessed (Mk. 12:44). This episode is among the most familiar of the Gospel stories. And the poor widow has been remembered down through the Ages, not for the size of her tiny contribution, but for the spirit in which it was made. One writer has renamed the story as, 'Widow's Might' because her Faith was bigger than her own Needs. She takes a 'mighty risk', by giving both her coins ( in Greek 'lepla' - the smallest coin in circulation, the penny of Jesus' time), as she could have kept one as a security. This story fits well as a contrast to the preceding section of Mark's Gospel, in illustrating the true faith response so lacking among the Jewish authorities. Jesus himself observes the widow and later summons his disciples for the teaching" moment. The market value of the 'lepla' was minimal. The two coins could buy a scone of barley bread. Probably she went hungry, only warmed by the generosity of her heart. There is a wonderful thing that happens to us when our hearts are stirred by the experience of God's living, loving, caring Presence in our lives. God is with us! We respond to God's giving of Himself in this way by the giving of ourselves to God and to each other, generously and willingly. Consequently... Your generous giving to the Church comes straight from the heart, in the spirit of the widow at the Temple Treasury. May your generous giving of yourself to others come from the heart, in the spirit of Christian love. It is not difficult to find another person, more disadvantaged than you needing company to overcome loneliness, comfort to bear the pain, attention to know life is worth living and some cash to have food for a day. There are always those little people who preach the best homilies by their lives. They give of the little they have. They may light a candle for a sick friend, request a mass card for a cause close to their heart, contribute to a food kitchen or a clothing drive. They seek those who are poorer than they at every turn. Jesus' statement that the widow s was the major contribution requires explanation. Others gave with little or no sense of sacrifice. Even after their donations, their needs would be amply met. But the widow deprived herself and felt the pain in giving from the little that she had. Hers was the true spirit of generosity and religious dedication. The story of the "widow's mite" is not just an interesting insight into Jewish Palestinian life. It is really the type of generosity that we meet day after day. It is humbling to think of how people with limited resources and heavy financial responsibilities sacrifice themselves for others, whether at home or in foreign lands. And it is done with grace and a smile. Many times, writing a check is the easiest way to exercise charity. Certainly it is good in itself and not to be disdained. But so often a duty discharged through donation is forgotten ten minutes after it is done. There are people for whom it is much more important to give of their time than their money. Time is costly; we feel the pinch. Please hold a dinner time conversation with family/friends on how you can share your Talent, Treasure and Time (Triple T) with the Parish Family with the mind-set of the Widow of Mark s Gospel. Decorate the table with pennies, nickels and dimes and call the meal Widow s Treat. Children get to keep the dimes, if their ideas win! Have fun! Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

4 Ministry Weekend Our ministries are looking for As some of you may or may not know, Almeda Silva and Dcn Rob spend Wednesday mornings up in Spring Valley praying in front of the Plan Parenthood (PP) site. Recently when they were up there praying, a young woman approached them and wanted to share a story with them. She told them that 22 years ago she was pregnant and on her way into a PP facility. A group of pro-life advocates were praying nearby and one had seen her and handed her a brochure. As she was waiting in the PP reception area, she had time to look over the brochure. Finally, after her medical examination the PP counselor told her the good news that she was carrying twins and there will be no extra cost for the abortion (i.e., two for the price of one). At this point it wasn't about the money but her thoughts were about the brochure she had read and what the doctor was going to do to the two innocent lives she was carrying. She immediately bolted out of the PP facility and never looked back. Her message to Almeda and Dcn Rob was that their efforts are not in vain and not wasted. Because of people like them that she met 22 years ago had opened her eyes and conscience and she avoided a terrible mistake. She also mentioned that she had just dropped off one of her grandchildren at the day care center by PP and came over to share her story with them. She has three beautiful grandchildren from her 22 year old twin sons. 5 New Outdoor Nativity Set for St. John s We are in the process of raising funds for a new Nativity set for St. John s. We are grateful that our church continues to be opened. This Christmas let us light up our Church and let all know the Light of Christ is here to stay. If you would like to make a donation to the Nativity, please contact Janet Zahn or call the rectory. John Gannon, who served as pastor here at St. John s from 1973 to The chalice was gifted to Rev. John Gannon from Pallister Family, as it was heirloom from their family Priest Rev. Walter Pallister, who was ordained on June 1, This chalice is over 100 years old. Our Sacramental Life We celebrate Baptism: Please call the Rectory well in advance of the expected day of Baptism to arrange an appointment for an interview. Pre-baptismal meeting for parents is required. We require all Baptismal families to be registered at St. John s. Godparents must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Generally Baptisms are celebrated the third Sunday of each month at 12:00 pm. We celebrate Reconciliation: Confessions are heard from 4:30-5:00 pm on Saturday. You may also make an appointment with one of the priests. Spanish confessions is available 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month and from 12:30 1:00 PM on Sundays. We celebrate Marriage: Marriages should be arranged at least six months in advance. Participation in Pre-Cana is essential. Please call the Rectory to schedule an appointment with one of the priests. We celebrate Anointing of the Sick: Planning to enter the hospital for elective surgery or other serious treatment, and for those who have need of spiritual healing. In an emergency, call the Rectory at any time. We celebrate Holy Orders: Any gentleman interested in exploring the question of vocation to the priesthood or the permanent diaconate should contact Fr. Tom Kunnel. We would also be happy to direct anyone interested in living their lives as Religious Sisters or Brothers. We celebrate the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults: We welcome you to full membership in the life of the Church. The instruction for Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist for adults. If interested please contact Dcn Robert Pang. Parish Registration: All adults (over age 21) should register in the parish themselves and should use envelopes or parishpay.com. Tithing is 5% of income. This registration is our only means of certifying anyone as a member of the parish, especially for Baptism and Confirmation sponsorship letters and for scheduling Baptisms and Weddings.
