Dear Parish Family, Sunday s First Reading reminds us peacefully and beautifully to watch for God at dawn; to keep vigil because Wisdom (the Holy Spirit of God) is searching for those who are waiting. God's wisdom meets them with all solicitude. The Responsorial Psalm boldly names our craving for God. The antiphon says, My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God. And the Gospel adds, Stay awake! Make preparations. Do not be foolish. Do not forget to be ready. Let s face it. You and I desire God more than anything else. At the center of our souls is a thirst that will never be satisfied unless the God of all creation comes in person to be living water for us. We live like parched ground without rain. We have huge fractures in our surface. Our souls ache for the gentle, courteous and tender outpouring God wants to provide not like hurricanes or floods, but like a mother with her newborn. Jesus is always telling us to wake up, to stay awake, to be vigilant, to be more alert to a deeper reality. What s meant by that? How are we asleep? All of us know how difficult it is for us to be inside the present moment, to not be asleep to the real riches inside our own lives. The distractions and worries of daily life tend to so consume us that we habitually take for granted what s most precious to us, our health, the miracle of our senses, the love and friendships that surround us, and the gift of life itself. We go through our daily lives not only with a lack of reflectiveness and lack of gratitude but with a habitual touch of resentment as well, a chronic, grey depression, as Robert Moore calls it. We are very much asleep, both to God and to our own lives. How do we wake up? Rev. Ron Rolheiser gives us this insight: Today there s a rich literature that offers us all kinds of advice on how to get into the present moment so as to be awake to the deep riches inside our own lives. While much of this literature is good, little of it is very effective. It invites us to live each day of our lives as if was our last day, but we simply can t do that. It s impossible to sustain that kind of intentionality and awareness over a long period of time. None of us can live seventy or eighty years as if each day was his or her last day. Or can we? Spiritual wisdom offers a nuanced answer here: We can and we can t! On the one hand, the distractions, cares, and pressures of everyday life will invariably have their way with us and we will, in effect, fall asleep to what s deeper and more important inside of life. But it s for this reason that every major spiritual tradition has daily rituals designed precisely to wake us from spiritual sleep, akin an alarm clock waking us from physical sleep. It s for this reason we need to begin each day with prayer. What happens if we don t pray on a given morning is not that we incur God s wrath, but rather that we tend to miss the morning, spending the hours until noon trapped inside a certain dullness of heart. The same can be said about praying before meals. We don t displease God by not first centering ourselves in gratitude before eating, but we miss out on the richness of what we re doing. Liturgical prayer and the Eucharist have the same intent, among their other intentions. They re meant to, regularly, call us out of a certain sleep. None of us lives each day of our lives as if it was his or her last day. Our heartaches, headaches, distractions, and busyness invariably lull us to sleep. That s forgivable; it s what it means to be human. So we should ensure that we have regular spiritual rituals, spiritual alarm clocks, to jolt us back awake so that it doesn t take a heart attack, a stroke, cancer, or death to wake us up. Fr. Tom Kunnel C.O.

4 TODAY'S READINGS WISDOM We consider wisdom today. The first reading from the book of Wisdom presents this precious gift as a feminine spirit, a very desirable virtue sought by many and graciously present to all who seek her. In today's Gospel, Jesus tells a parable to illustrate wisdom in a practical, measurable way. The wise will conserve their resources, use them prudently, and mark the passing of time. The foolish, on the other hand, not planning ahead, will be in the dark. Both of these readings tell us how accessible wisdom is to all who simply and honestly seek it. Paul's words to the Thessalonians are not about wisdom, but describe one result of true wisdom: To the wise person of faith even death holds no terror. Our faith in Jesus' resurrection tells us we will all one day rise to new life in Christ. 11/5 $5197 Will be reported next week 10/22 #331 Mary Armstrong 10/29 #40 Brenna Henry 11/5 #202 Paul Johnson First Reading -- Wisdom is easily discerned by those who love her (Wisdom 6:12-16). Psalm -- My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God (Psalm 63). Second Reading -- Since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 [13-14]). Gospel -- Stay awake! You know neither the day nor the hour (Matthew 25:1-13). CDA Holiday Boutique The Catholic Daughters are preparing for their annual Holiday Boutique. If you would like to donate to their White Elephant Table, items can be dropped off at Connelly Hall on: Saturdays 11/4, 11/11 from 10AM 12 Noon Please make sure all items are cleaned and in good working order. NO Books and NO Clothes. Thank you for your donations. Holiday Boutique Saturday, 11/ AM 3PM The Outreach Ministry is beginning their annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Drive this weekend. Every year many families have enjoyed a wonderful holiday due to the generosity of our parishioners. After Mass members of Outreach will be taking names of those who are able to donate full baskets. They will also be happy to receive donations of any of the items on their list which is found in today s bulletin. All donations will be collected in Connelly Hall before and after all the Masses on the weekend of Nov 11 and 19. Congratulations to the parents and godparent of beloved child of God, may Baptism be the beginning of a life of faith and a heart full of goodness and love. The word Halloween itself is a shortened form of "All Hallows Eve," the day before All Saints Day. This holiday, properly understood and celebrated with all of its fun trappings, can be a way for us to deepen our understanding of faith. The purpose of the feast is to remember those who have died, whether they are officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church as saints or not. It is a celebration of the communion of saints, which reminds us that the church is not bound by space or time. Mr. & Mrs. John Cincotta Congratulations to you and may you be blessed with love and happiness forever.

For these blessed souls are His eternal spouses, and most grateful are they to those who obtain their deliverance from prison, or even a mitigation of their torments. When, therefore, they arrive in Heaven, they will be sure to remember all who have prayed for them. It is a pious belief that God manifests to them our prayers in their behalf, that they may also pray for us. It is true that these blessed souls are not in a state to pray for themselves, because they are atoning for their faults. However, because they are very dear to God, they can pray for us, and obtain for us the divine graces. Saint Catherine of Bologna, when she wished to obtain any grace, had recourse to the souls in Purgatory, and her prayers were heard immediately. She declared that, by praying to those holy souls, she obtained many favors which she had sought through the intercession of the saints without obtaining them. The graces which devout persons are said to have received through these holy souls are innumerable. But, if we wish for the aid of their prayers, it is just, it is even a duty, to relieve them by our suffrages. I say, it is even a duty: for Christian charity commands us to relieve our neighbors who stand in need of our assistance. But who among all our neighbors have so great need of our help as those holy prisoners? They are continually in that fire which torments more severely than any earthly fire. They are deprived of the sight of God, a torment far more excruciating than all other pains. Let us reflect that among these suffering souls are parents, or brothers, or relations and friends, who look to us for succor. Let us remember, moreover, that being in the condition of debtors for their sins, they cannot assist themselves. This thought should urge us forward to relieve them to the best of our ability. By assisting them we shall not only give great pleasure to God, but will acquire also great merit for ourselves. And, in return for our suffrages, these blessed souls will not neglect to obtain for us many graces from God, but particularly the grace of eternal life. I hold for certain that when a soul delivered from Purgatory by the suffrages of a Christian enters paradise, she will not fail to say to God: Lord, do not suffer that person to be lost who has liberated me from the prison of Purgatory, and has brought me to the enjoyment of Thy glory sooner than I had deserved.

The daughter of the King of Hungary, Elizabeth chose a life of penance and asceticism when a life of leisure and luxury could easily have been hers. This choice endeared her in the hearts of the common people throughout Europe. At the age of 14, Elizabeth was married to Louis of Thuringia, whom she deeply loved. She bore three children. Under the spiritual direction of a Franciscan friar, she led a life of prayer, sacrifice, and service to the poor and sick. Seeking to become one with the poor, she wore simple clothing. Daily she would take bread to hundreds of the poorest in the land who came to her gate. After six years of marriage, her husband died in the Crusades, and Elizabeth was grief -stricken. Her husband s family looked upon her as squandering the royal purse, and mistreated her, finally throwing her out of the palace. The return of her husband s allies from the Crusades resulted in her being reinstated, since her son was legal heir to the throne. In 1228, Elizabeth joined the Secular Franciscan Order, spending the remaining few years of her life caring for the poor in a hospital which she founded in honor of Saint Francis. Elizabeth s health declined, and she died before her 24th birthday in Her great popularity resulted in her canonization four years later.
