VALENTINE S DAY DINNER DANCE - The Italian Community is organizing its annual Valentine s Day Dinner on Sunday, February 9 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at the Church Hall, catered and served by The Brownstone Restaurant. Tickets are $65.00 per person, on sale at the rectory s office. FEAST OF ST. BLAISE The special blessing of St. Blaise for the throats will be given after the 7:00 & 8:00 AM masses this Monday, February 3. DAY OF THE SICK On Tuesday, February 11 at 7:00 PM, we will administer the Anointing of the Sick to all in need of spiritual and physical healing. There will be no CCD Classes on Sunday, Feb 9. Shoprite Cards are available after each Sunday Mass or during the week at the office. Our church will get 5% of what you spend. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE FOR COLLECTION AMOUNT PLEASE CHECK BULLETIN PAPER EDITION ~As good steward we give back to God what He has given us ~ 4th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A CHRISTMAS REPRISE The Church's celebration three weeks ago of the Baptism of the Lord signaled the "official" end of the Christmas season. Today's feast of the Presentation of the Lord seems to extend the Incarnation celebration a bit longer. In fact, some have called this feast a "second Epiphany." The first reading recalls the anticipation of Advent, as Malachi writes, "Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me." The reading from Hebrews reminds us of the Incarnation, proclaiming that Jesus had a "share" in our own "blood and flesh." The Gospel finds the infant Jesus on his first visit to Jerusalem and his human parents once again surprised and in awe over the events surround his birth. In the simplicity of the manger, in the grandeur of the temple, in the domesticity of Nazareth, Jesus comes. May we come to know him and so be filled with "wisdom" and the "favor of God." Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By Candlemas, forty days after Christmas, February 2, the season of Christ's coming has depleted our candle supply. Soon, the parish will order a new paschal candle from a catalogue or candlemaker, or in some communities, wax will be collected to be melted and molded. Last year's paschal candle shows the wear and tear of summer heat, or many funerals or baptisms. Paschal candles have been around since at least the fourth century, when Constantine's biographer Eusebius reported that the night of the sacred vigil was "transformed into the brilliancy of day, by lighting throughout the city pillars of wax, while burning lamps in every place so that the splendor of this night was brighter than the brightest daylight." Light was a precious commodity in the ancient world, and this lavish use of precious beeswax was a sign of the Christian's call to bear Christ's light into the world's darkness. In a pre-electric age, a whole city aglow from the paschal flame must have been a glorious sight, and a reminder to every baptized Christian of our vocation to "be the light of the world." --Rev. This is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on God s generosity to us. This year, our parish goals are as follows: Parish Goal 2014: $14, Parish Stretch Goal 2014: $18, This year s AAA will continue to support the many good works of the ministries throughout the Archdiocese. This appeal is meant to instill in us all a heart and spirit of gratitude, reminding us that God will always be there. Through this campaign, we are called on to answer the cry of the poor; to help those who are in need; to feed, shelter, clothe, teach, and bring the Faith to those who are in need of hearing the good news of the Gospel. Thousands of people in the four counties served by the Archdiocese of Newark are assisted each year through various programs and ministries funded by the Appeal. You may attend the 8:00 AM Mass. PILGRIMAGE RESCHEDULED Our pilgrimage to Rome and the Holy Land has been rescheduled. Due to the high cost of the trip, we were not able to reach the necessary number of people requested by the travel agency. We are planning another trip for October 27 and it will cost $ less. If you would like to go, please let us know by calling the rectory s office at NEW STATUE OF PADRE PIO Our Church will be blessed with the statue of our beloved St. Padre Pio de Pietrelcina. The statue was donated by the friends of our parish and will be installed on Saturday, February 22 with a solemn mass at 6:00 PM, followed by light reception in the Church Hall. BIBLE STUDY IN ENGLISH Those interested in attending this Bible Study group, please come and join us. The classes are held in the church hall every Friday from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. Due to the large group of parishioners and friends attending these classes we have relocated them to the church hall. Bring your Bible! 5 2014 Archbishop s Annual Appeal My Dear Friends in Christ, This year the theme of the Appeal is, When I called, You answered. It comes from Psalm 138 where the psalmist thanks God for hearing his prayer. God calls us also and we answer in many ways. The Archbishop s Annual Appeal is one way God calls and our participation is our answer to Him. The Archbishop s Annual Appeal provides the poor with food, shelter and clothing; makes religious education, spiritual guidance and CYO athletics available for the young; insures the future leadership of the Church with seminarian education and training; and most importantly, brings Christ s Good News to the people of the Archdiocese.
