ADMINISTRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS Baptisms: On any available Sunday during the 11:00 AM (Italian), 9:30 AM or 12:30 PM (English) & 7:00 PM (Portuguese) Masses. Please, contact the rectory at least one month prior to desired date. Confessions: Saturdays 5:00 to 5:45 PM, or during the week by appointment. Marriages: Please contact the rectory at least six months prior to desired wedding date. Sacrament of the Sick: If you are hospitalized or unable to come to Church for health reasons and would like to be visited by a priest for Confession, Communion, or Anointing of the Sick, please call the rectory. Religious Education Program (CCD): For children 1 st to 8 th grades who are not attending Catholic School. Classes are held on Sundays from September to May at 11:30 AM, with attendance to the 12:30 PM Family Mass. Confirmation: Teens will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on 8 th grade. They will attend classes at 11:30 AM from September to December; and from January to April classes will start at 11:00 AM in the church hall, with attendance to the 12:30 PM Family Mass. Remember our deceased: Carol Ann Caola (8/27) and Susan Pallotta (8/26) FOLLOWING CHRIST If you've ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God "good one--you duped me." We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is "duping" him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God's will for him by trying to shut up; Peter--who has just been made the foundation of the church--out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named "Satan" today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week's Gospel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when it means following him to our very death. That is because so many families have supported it throughout these years. It began on times when there were no computerized printers, when everything was done by hand, and every contract was made personally. There was a lot of work involved in the creation of each Journal. And the same commitment continues to this day. We invite you to once again or for the first time be part of St. Nicholas history by sponsoring a page in this 2017 ANNUAL JOURNAL. You might sponsor: 1) - a memorial in honor of your deceased; 2) - a business ad; or 3) - a congratulatory tribute. WE NEED NEW SPONSORS If you know businesses, friends or members of your family who would like to participate, present the idea to them. You will be surprised by the great response you will have by asking people to support our Saint Nicholas Church. The 2017 Annual Journal will be presented at the 52 nd ANNUAL DINNER DANCE to be held on Saturday, October 14 at The Brownstone Restaurant in Paterson. It will be a great evening of elegant dinner, dancing and lots of fun. Over 200 parishioners and friends of St. Nicholas are expected to attend. A ticket for the dinner is $75.00 per person and can be reserved by calling RELIGIOUS EDUCATION All children of our parish, grades 1 to 8, who are not enrolled in Catholic School should attend our Religious Education Program. Please come to the rectory office to register your child for the CCD Religious Education Program. Classes will be held on Sunday morning at 11:30 AM starting September 24. Vocationist Corner We are limited and successive beings. We cannot simultaneously satisfy every duty, but one at a time. Great means of perfection is to concentrate ourselves totally in fulfilling the duty of the passing moment as if we were, so to speak, with no past, no future, in an eternal present (VI, 242). We are limited and successive even in our freedom! For our freedom in our state of way and probation is essential that we be allowed to choose between a greater and a lesser good (III, 251). Fr. St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 834 South Orange Blossom Trail Apopka, FL Dear beloved parishioners and staff of St. Nicholas Church: It is with humble gratitude that I thank you for the wonderful farewell Mass and party celebrating my time at St. Nicholas. Thank you, also for all of your thoughtful gifts. It was my honor and joy to serve you these past six years. You have brought a multitude of blessings to my life. I am even more thankful to God for having given me the opportunity to make memories and grow in faith within your presence. As you probably know by now, I have been appointed to serve the community of St. Francis of Assisi in Apopka, Florida. I wanted to take this opportunity to inform you of my upcoming installation as Pastor of St. Francis of Assisi. The installation will take place on Sunday, October, 29th, 2017 at 10:30 AM Mass. Please pray for me as I follow God s will in this new chapter of my life. I will continue to pray for all of you.
