These themes run throughout t o d a y ' s scripture readings. The first reading from the Acts of the Apostles describes the joyful early days of the newly born church, when members devoted themselves to instruction, the communal life, the breaking of bread, and the prayers. The passage from Peter's first letter echoes that joy, and assures those who now believe though they never saw Jesus that their faith will lead to their salvation. But amid all the joy, the Gospel reading calls us to sober reality. Not everyone can believe so easily. Even an apostle can doubt this astonishing news of the Resurrection. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION One of the great Easter traditions is "mystagogy," an ancient word meaning "reflection on the mysteries." It is a style of catechesis, or passing on the faith. People who have shared an experience, in this case those who have been baptized at Easter, are urged to recall their experience, reflect on its meaning, and apply their insights to their new way of life. There is an aspect of an experience that is simply not available until you've had it. For example, you may think you know weddings inside out; you've been to dozens, seen hundreds in the movies or on television, but until you've said "I do" to another, there is a certain knowledge unavailable to you. Those who go down into the waters of baptism as adults have similar experiences; they have all taken baths before, but not like this one! Mystagogy helps such persons to uncover the deep meaning of the experience, their sense of a new beginning, of God's abundant love, of forgiveness, of community. It takes time for the power of the Easter Vigil to work its wonders for us. Those who are newly baptized are called "neophytes," meaning "newly planted." 4 COME TO THE FEAST OF THE DIVINE MERCY Sunday, April 27 th In the year 2000 after many years of study by the Catholic Church, Pope John Paul II fulfilled the will of Christ and officially established that Feast of Divine Mercy and named it Divine Mercy Sunday. What is so special about this new Feast of Divine Mercy you might ask? It is the promise of the total forgiveness of all sins and punishment for anyone that would go to Confession and receive Communion on that very special Feast of Divine Mercy! Why would Jesus offer us something so great right now? Jesus told St. Faustina that she was to prepare the world for His Second Coming and He wants to pour out His Mercy before He comes again as the Just Judge and as a last hope of salvation. We will celebrate the feast of the DIVINE MERCY at 3:00PM with prayer and the chaplet in English, Italian and Portuguese All parishioners are invited to participate VISIT OUR CHURCH S WEBSITE STNICHOLASRCCHURCH.ORG THE SANCTUARY OF OUR CHURCH IS GETTING A NEW LOOK - As you can see, the flooring has already been renovated and it looks beautiful. We are acquiring a new altar, lectern and tabernacle pedestal. The tabernacle has been moved to the center of the altar, as JESUS is the center of our lives. Come and see the changes already made. If all goes well, by the end of March we will have the sanctuary totally renewed. We extend a warm welcome to our new parishioners who have joined us these past months: Robert Dillon family, Luigi Zefi family, Terry Yim family, Kathy Margie family, Marie Esposito, Jose Luis Vidal and Steve Vernillo. Our hope is that you will always feel welcome here at St. Nicholas. We ask all of our new parishioners to please come to the rectory and register in the parish. 5 ~ Divine Mercy Sunday ~ Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one; I died, and behold I am alive for evermore (Rev 1:17-18) In the Messiah, crucified and risen, we recognize the features of the Lamb sacrificed on Golgotha, who implores forgiveness for His torturers and opens the gates of heaven to repentant sinners; we glimpse the face of the immortal King who now has the keys of Death and Hades (Rev 1:18). Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy endures forever! (Ps 117:1). Let us make our own the Psalmist s exclamation which we sang in the Responsorial Psalm: The Lord s mercy endures forever! In order to understand thoroughly the truth of these words, let us be led by the liturgy to the heart of the event of salvation, which unites Christ s Death and Resurrection with our lives and with the world s history. This miracle of mercy has radically changed humanity s destiny. It is a miracle in which is unfolded the fullness of the love of the Father who, for our redemption, does not even draw back before the sacrifice of His Only-begotten Son. In the humiliated and suffering Christ, believers and nonbelievers can admire a surprising solidarity, which binds Him to our human condition beyond all imaginable measure. The Cross, even after the Resurrection of the Son of God, speaks and never ceases to speak of God the Father, who is absolutely faithful to His eternal love for man. Believing in this love means believing in mercy (Rich in Mercy, 7). Let us thank the Lord for His love, which is stronger than death and sin. It is revealed and put into practice as mercy in our daily lives, and prompts every person in turn to have mercy towards the Crucified One. Is not loving God and loving one s neighbor and even one s enemies, after Jesus example, the program of life of every baptized person and of the whole Church? From Pope John Paul II s Homily on the 1st universal celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday, CANONIZATION OF POPES JOHN PAUL II AND JOHN XXIII The Roman Catholic Church is set for major celebrations around the world to mark the canonization of popes John Paul II and John XXIII this Sunday, April 27th. The Vatican discussed their sainthood during a Tuesday press briefing, saying, "Father Giovangiuseppe Califano, the postulator for John XXIII, said as a 15-year-old seminarian Angelo Roncalli was already making resolutions that were intended to help him become a saint for real. He said Pope John's sainthood was characterized by a deep humility and he was both a shepherd and a father," according to Vatican Radio. "Roncalli, he continued, opened new horizons to the Church by convening the Second Vatican Council and was a capable communicator who by using simple every-day expressions succeeded in entering immediately into the hearts of people. Father Califano went on to explain how the words 'obedience and peace' were not just Roncalli's episcopal motto but were at the root of his sainthood as they characterized his life at the service of the Church." Pope John Paul II's postulator, Monsignor Slavomir Oder, said that the two met at a university and he saw him as a "future saint" because of his prayer habits and reflections on the value of life. "He said John Paul's profound mysticism encouraged him to personally live out the mystery of God in his own life," Vatican Radio reported. "Man of God, Monsignor Oder said, is the word that truly characterizes a saint and this applies to Woytyla. He was a man who found the source of his life in God. Prayer for Karol Woytyla was his air, his water and his daily bread." The canonizations of Pope John XXIII and Pope John Paul II on Divine Mercy Sunday will mark a historic and highly spiritual moment for the Catholic Church.
