IMMACULATE CONCEPTION NOVENA Our novena will start on Friday, November 29 with masses every evening at 7:30 PM, in English. BEREAVEMENT MASSES IN PREPARATION FOR CHRISTMAS These masses will be celebrated in memory of all those who have departed and are greatly missed. The masses will be on Monday, December 9 at 7:30 PM in Italian and on Wednesday, December 11 at 7:30 PM in English. RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR - We are planning a trip to attend the show on Tuesday, December 10 (Leaving the parking lot at 6:00 PM.) Tickets are $55.00 per person. Both the prophet Malachi and Jesus in the Gospel according to Luke offer graphic pictures of a terrible future. But we are missing the message if we use these passages to speculate about when the world will end. The troubles predicted have already occurred, and then some. In the last century alone we have seen devastation beyond anything the ancient prophets could have imagined. We weren't given these passages to strike fear in our hearts, but faith. The sun of justice will rise, Malachi assures us, for those who are faithful. And Jesus promises, "By your perseverance you will secure your lives." But it is Paul who brings the message down to earth. The Thessalonians were so sure that the end of the world was upon them, some of them had stopped working! Paul states his case clearly: "If anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat." We are not called to worry about how things will end, but to live today faithfully. Copyright (c) J. S. STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE FOR COLLECTION AMOUNT PLEASE CHECK BULLETIN PAPER EDITION This week second collection will be for the Black and Indian Missions Catholic Relief Services ~ SPECIAL COLLECTION ~ Philippines Typhoon Relief We all have heard by now about the devastation in the Philippines resulting from Typhoon Haiyan. The ties between the people and nation of the Philippines and The Archdiocese of Newark are many and strong. Today, close to 60,000 live within the four northern New Jersey Counties that constitute the Archdiocese. Filipino Catholics worship in and participate in the life of our parishes. The children of these parishioners attend our schools and religious education programs. His Grace has authorized an emergency collection to be taken at all Catholic parishes in the Newark Archdiocese, to aid humanitarian and institutional needs of the Catholic Church in the Philippines and surrounding area at this time, in line with the guidance issued by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. Stephen is gathering a group of parishioners, family and friends to travel in pilgrimage to Rome - Italy, to attend the canonization of Blessed Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII, leaving on April 24, The trip will extend to the city of Assisi and the Holy Land. ARMANDO s installation as the new Pastor of the Shrine Church of Our Lady of Solace in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY, will be on Sunday, December 1 at the 12:30 PM mass, followed by light reception. Fr. Armando is also celebrating his 15 years of priestly ordination that day, and invites all St. Nicholas parishioners and friends to come and celebrate with him. Vocationist Corner JUSTINIAN YEAR September 20, 2013 to September 20, 2014 Do not be content of harvesting some flowers of sentiment along the edge of this holy life. Advance on it with perseverance. Each step will appear similar to the previous one, but in the meantime you keep advancing (XV, 166). What is more helpful to the works of the Lord is holy boldness in starting them, and holy perseverance in carrying them to completion, even during trials, despite all the oppositions (VI, 298).
