John 13: OPTIONS We live in a society and world in which we take immense pride in choosing from a variety of different options, options regarding what we eat, options regarding what movie to watch, options regarding what friends we have, the list could be and probably is endless. In Colossians 3:4, Paul says something to those Christians that to me is earth shattering and extremely sobering. When Christ, WHO IS YOUR LIFE appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Every time I consider that phrase, I am completely humbled; my life, my everything, not just an option of convenience among many other options but my entirety. I am more and more convicted every single day that I oftentimes treat God as another option among many options. I think about whether or not I live in desperation for Christ, thirsting for His movement, touch, and communication in my life. I am more and more convicted every single day that the church is oftentimes responsible for perpetuating this option mentality when it comes to following in the steps of Jesus. We desire that God increase in our lives but with the least amount of interference and inconvenience to us. We have all the time in the world to attend sporting events, to work, to be on Facebook or many other forms of social media, and to taxi our kids everywhere. But what are we teaching ourselves and others about what really matters when every other thing that is really just another option is stripped away? What about the Creator of the universe who deeply desires you and me? Is He really just another option to you and me or is He quite literally OUR LIFE? ~Anthony~

5 Wednesday, March 12th, 2014 Read Philemon 1:4-7 and consider in what ways you currently partner with other brothers and sisters in Christ in sharing your faith with those around you. What is God saying to you in this passage? How are you going to respond? Pray about these things today. Come, Follow Me-Into the Unknown The Text: Mark 1:14-20 The Key Point: Following Jesus is placing security in the who, rather than the. Thursday, March 13th, 2014 Read John 4:27-38 and consider the following questions. 1.) How are you currently being consumed by things that do not have eternal significance so that your eyes are closed to the opportunities that God has placed right in front of your face? 2.) How can you more effectively be available so that God can open your eyes to the magnificent opportunities that He has placed right in front of your face? Pray today for an eternal perspective and the eyes of Jesus. Friday, March 14th, 2014 Read Colossians 1:28-29 and consider in what ways we can and should do this for brothers and sisters in Christ around us and for those that don t know Jesus who are also around us. What does this tangibly and practically look like? Are you currently involved in this? If so, how and if not, why? Pray today that you would have a very deep desire to proclaim Jesus, not out of obligation but in recognition of what He has done and continues to do for you. Saturday, March 15th, 2014 Read Matthew 28:18-20 and consider whether or not this passage has become ordinary to you. In other words, have you heard it so many times that the freshness of its principles are gone? Consider how we live this passage out in new, exciting, and fresh ways. Pray today for the eyes of your heart to be opened to see the whole of a person, their souls (spiritual condition), their physical condition, and their mental and emotional conditions. So what? Jesus invitation to follow is for. 2. The only pre-qualification for Jesus followers is a. 3. Jesus call isn t to the prepared, but to those. Now What? 1. Determine what needs to be left. 2. Allow the one who knows and is known to. 3. Don t place pre-qualifications on others that weren t on his first followers.

6 March 9, 2014 Netherwood Park Small Group Questions Intro Question 1. If you were invited on a long journey, what three questions about the trip would you ask? Why? Read aloud Mark 1:14-20 & 2: If you were going to develop a description of an ideal disciple candidate, what qualifications would you include? How do the qualifications of the men called by Jesus compare to your ideal candidate? What do you believe was the primary qualification Jesus was looking for in his disciples? Why? 2. If you were in Zebedee s sandals, how would you have felt when your two sons dropped the nets a followed Jesus? What does their response tell us about James and John? What does it tell us about their view of Jesus? 3. While Jesus calling of the fishermen was unconventional, his calling of Levi (Matthew) was scandalous what message does Jesus deliver in selecting Levi as one of his disciples? Has that message changed? Why or why not? Application What in your life do you need to leave behind in order to follow Jesus without any encumbrances? What fears of the unknown do you need to set aside in order to confidently follow Jesus into the unknown? Born To Be Disciples How does the Great Commission in verses fit into the pattern of the rest of Matthew s Gospel? What is Jesus wanting of us in these marching orders? Jesus does not recommend such a mission. He demands it. It is his final charge. How can His church fail to keep it? Yet evangelism is the Cinderella at the Christian ball. We Christians are guilty of flagrant disobedience to our Master, and the coming of his kingdom is delayed. The Great Commission includes the baptism and careful discipling of new believers. Matthew is not satisfied, and Jesus is not satisfied, with any hasty profession of faith, any perfunctory baptism. The apostles are called not to evoke decisions but to make disciples. And that is an altogether tougher assignment. Matthew has shown throughout his book how slow Jesus disciples were to do and be what he wanted. The apostles are to baptize and they are to nurture people in the Christian path so that they in turn can go and make disciples themselves. The Letters of the New Testament show the depth and intensity of that discipling, and show up our modern five-minute sermonettes for the pathetic things they are. Finally, the Great Commission is always directed outwards, to the unreached. The Christian church must never degenerate into a comfortable club for the like-minded. It is always called to a discipling, teaching evangelism. And Matthew has provided not only for his own church, but for all time, a magnificent, well-organized tool for carrying out that Great Commission with which his Gospel ends. (David Nestor) Monday, March 10th, 2014 Read Genesis 1:26-27 and consider the following question. Do I see/view every person that I come into contact with as a soul, before anything else? Meditate upon why you answered the above question in the way that you did. Pray today that you/we would understand the importance of seeing/viewing every person that you/we come into contact with as a soul. Pray also for God to bring sweeping changes to your/our perspective(s) about how we look at all people. Tuesday, March 11th, 2014 Read Matthew 9:35-38 and consider the following questions. 1.) What does it mean to care for all of a person and not just their spiritual condition? 2.) Why is this important not only to understand but also do? 2.) In what specific ways are you laboring in the harvest for the Lord and not for yourself or because you feel obligated? Pray about these things today.
