I See You Shining! You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 Did you know the Bible is full of light? Over and over again, light is used as a metaphor for what is good, pure and holy and light is held up as an antidote for darkness, despair and evil. Not surprisingly, both God the Father and His son Jesus are described as light and their followers are called on to be light to the world around them. That is why I am so pleased to be able to say, I see you shining Netherwood! Here are just two recent examples of God being glorified by your lights shining before others. 1) We have had several memorial services in the last few weeks and the meals prepared and served for the families in love, the songs lifted up in mercy and the kind words and hugs offered in compassion brought God s light to hurting people in the darkness of their grief. 2) In the dark of Halloween night you brought God s light to our neighborhood when you dressed up, served children and demonstrated what love, unity and joy looks like in God s family. We are just one week away from another opportunity to brightly shine God s light before our community by showing His love and compassion to those who lack adequate food. Our Pack the Pulpit Sunday gives us a chance to restock our food pantry and to fill up holiday food boxes so we can generously provide what others don t have. So please plan on donating generously so God will be glorified as we keep our lights shining Netherwood! Walter THURSDAY LADIES CLASS 9:30am

4 Quarterly Elder Activities Summary July-September 2014 We continue to pray for each family at Netherwood Park, and for specific physical and spiritual needs of members of the congregation and for those of which we are aware that are not members of the congregation. We continue meeting, as an eldership and individually, with individuals concerning spiritual or physical needs or questions. Bible Bowl study and preparation was approved for Netherwood Park participation. State of the church was presented to the congregation on August 13, The first Outreach Sunday was approved and held September 7, Facility Use Ministry proposal and initiation proposed by Jim Guthrie and was approved. An attempt to have a member have contact with each of the organizations using our facility will be initiated and continued. We agreed to evaluate what it takes to be able to use the gym for temporary class rooms or meeting space. Mission of Motherhood (MOM) class, for young mothers, was proposed by Ashley Guerra and accepted by the elders. Ashley and several mature moms are planning and organizing this effort. Several possible issues related to the MOMs class are being addressed, they are: Do we need a focus for young dads? What are the space impacts that the MOMs class will have on other classes or class room space? Is the nursery prepared for the possible impact of the MOMs class? Should there be a congregational focus on family in conjunction with the MOMs class? Don t hesitate to use the elders private address, elders@netherwoodpark.com for suggestions and questions. Only the elders have access to this account. November 9, 2014 Netherwood Park Small Group Questions Intro Question If you randomly stopped a dozen strangers on the street and asked them who Jesus is, what answers would you expect to receive? Read aloud 1 Corinthians 15:12-19: 1. Why does Jesus resurrection occupy the central position in our preaching? In our faith? 2. Why was it necessary for Jesus to die and be resurrected? Wasn t there some other way to deal with our sin? 3. Why would Christians be deserving of pity if there is no resurrection hope? Isn t the Christian life worth living if there is nothing beyond this life? Application How does life lived with resurrection hope look different than life lived without?

The glorious light of resurrection. 1. Love is. 2. Darkness gave way to resurrection -! 3. Jesus light is brighter than the. A New Light for the Nations As we continue to look at how God has made it possible for His story to be our story, we will consider the church as it has been designed by God. It doesn t exist to be an organization but to be a living breathing organism comprised of people who have been forgiven of their sins and who are living as individual and collective lights for ALL people. Monday, November 10th, 2014 Read Hebrews 3:1-6 and consider the following quote by A.W. Tozer. One hundred religious persons knit into a unity by careful organization does not constitute a church any more than eleven dead men make a football team. The first requisite is life, always. What are some of the first things you consider when you think about the church? How does the congregation here at Netherwood actively function as God s house on a daily basis and how are you a part of this on a daily basis? Pray today that we at Netherwood would collectively seek to function as God s house day in and day out in the various contexts that God has made it possible for us to be in throughout our earthly lives. Tuesday, November 11th, 2014 Read Hebrews 10:19-25 understanding that verse 25 isn t primarily speaking about attendance at a service on the first day of the week but rather living as a community of God s people on a daily basis. Consider today what you bring to the table in regards to daily encouraging brothers and sisters in Christ to be a light exactly where God has put them. What are two ways in which you can more effectively do this today and the rest of this week for different brothers and sisters? Pray about these two ways today.

6 Wednesday, November 12th, 2014 Read Acts chapter 2 and consider the following quote by Francis Bacon. Nothing doth so much to keep men out of the Church, and drive men out of the Church, as breach of unity. Consider the following questions. What are you doing to contribute to the unity of this body here at Netherwood? What are you doing to detract from the unity of the body here at Netherwood? Pray today that you would take the unity of God s church seriously just as He does. Pray also that you would understand that being a part of God s church isn t about you but about Him and others being drawn to Him. Thursday, November 13th, 2014 Read Acts chapters 7 & 8 and consider the following quote by David Tracy and whether or not you agree or disagree with it. Essentially, a church is a community that keeps alive the dangerous memories of its classics. How did living dangerously allow the church in Acts to be a glorious light for the Lord? How do we live dangerously as God s church today at Netherwood? Friday, November 15th, 2014 Read Ephesians 2:19-22 and consider how you live in community with your brothers and sisters in Christ so that Jesus will be exalted as the cornerstone and so that others around you are able to see that the church isn t an institution that man has designed but a living organism that God has designed. What is God saying to you in this passage? How are you going to respond? Saturday, November 16th, 2014 Read Acts chapters 2 & 5 and consider how this body here at Netherwood can more effectively be God s light to the nations around us. What specifically would this entail and what would this look like? What are you willing to do in order to help Netherwood live out God s call for His people to live as lights? Pray today for the specific things that you said could allow Netherwood to more effectively be God s light. His Story - Our Story: The True Light Searching 1. The Old Testament ends with God s story in search of a conclusion: Where is the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace? *Isaiah 8:6 2. The next 400 years are a period of but political and cultural upheaval. 3. As the New Testament opens the Jews are a - geographically, culturally, linguistically and religiously. Silence broken. 1.
