1 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church Erected in 1936, the entire structure reflects the architectural style developed by missionaries, combining the building patterns of the Pueblo Indians with Spanish-Colonial design. 6 Whole Community Faith Sharing Gospel of Mark 9:30-37 Reflection: Jesus lays some hard truths on his disciples in this week's gospel. He tells them how he is to suffer and of his subsequent resurrection, but the disciples don't ask Jesus about this. Jesus knows that the disciples were discussing which of them was the greatest disciple instead. This completely incorrect thinking is immediately squashed by Jesus telling them that they must make themselves servants of all. Self-glorification is all around us. The "selfie" generation is upon us. We need to start placing others ahead of ourselves in order to inherit The Kingdom of God. Question: Sometimes, when we strive to be first or be the one that wins, we hurt others. When has striving to be first hurt others? What can I do differently in the future to help others to succeed? Faith Response: I will concentrate on finding ways to help people around me to succeed. Marriage Encounter Weekend Friday, November 16, - Sunday, November 18 Incarnation Parish, Glendale, CA The Marriage Encounter and Family Movement (MEFM) under the auspices of Of ice of Family Life will have a Marriage Encounter Weekend in November. 7 September 23, 2018 Page Six SEPTEMBER 27: FEAST OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL Saint Vincent de Paul, also known as Father of the Poor, was born in the French village of Pouy in He received his formal studies at the University of Toulose where he studied theology. Saint Vincent was ordained in 1600 and remained in Toulose for a time. In 1605, while on a ship traveling from Marseilles to Narbone, he was captured, brought to Tunis and sold as a slave. Two years later he managed to escape and return to France. Vincent went to Avignon and later to Rome to continue his studies. He started his first organization, the Ladies of Charity, an organization of women dedicated to assisting the poor, in 1617 when he experienced a personal conversion that led him to discover the need to evangelize and assist souls was so great and the demands beyond his own ability. Always depending on God's grace and the guidance of divine providence, Vincent instinctively looked around to see who was willing to join him with the strength of their arms and the sweat of their brows in this important mission. He founded a religious institute of priests - the Congregation of Priests of the Mission, commonly referred to now as the Vincentians and he cofounded the Daughters of Charity along with Saint Louise de Marillac. What these groups had in common and still have in common 400 years later is a shared mission to serve people in need and transform the world for the better by doing good and doing it well. Saint Vincent died in Paris on September 27, He left behind only a few meager personal possessions. Among these objects were his bachelor's degree from the University of Toulouse and his graduate degree from the University of Paris. His careful preservation of these two diplomas testifies to the value that he placed on his own education and his realization of how it had given direction and meaning to his life. Saint Vincent teaches us to see Christ in the poor and suffering, so much so that the poor become our Lords and Masters and we their servants. Vincentian spirituality is centered around this concept. Today, there are more than 250 congregations and associations who live out the Vincentian Charism in more than 90 countries.
