SAFEGUARD OUR CHILDREN Safety Tips for Kids Playing Sports This School Year Sports seasons start early, even for young children, and while it s great that they re out getting exercise and learning new skills, safety is still a top priority. It s recommended that all children who are playing school sports have an annual physical, and relevant health information (allergies, conditions, etc.) should be shared with coaches. Parents should make sure their children have the right gear, and that it fits and works wells. Children should stay well-hydrated, well-fed, and well-rested to keep up their energy and strength. Student athletes should be learning to be kind and fair, too, no matter the outcome of the game. 6 Whole Community Faith Sharing Gospel: Gospel John 6:60-69 Reflection: Having Faith is not necessarily constant. Even great Saints experienced periods of doubt we are human and imperfect. Words of real life, eternal life is the ultimate offer that Jesus brings, sealed with His blood. In today s world, having Faith amidst all of the turmoil can be challenging. What we must remember is that Jesus is the light, and what he asks of us, once the layers of organized religion layers are peeled away; is to simply love Him, accept his love for us, and love ourselves and each other. Love and Faith. If we practice this with the people around us, show that our Faith is constant, unbreakable, and spread good will and love, what a glorious spreading of community that can be! Faith shared by Community begets strength in Love. Reflection Question: Why is it sometimes difficult to practice my religious beliefs when others do not share them? Faith Response: I will name one way people can show the kind of faith in Jesus expressed by Peter. 7 Our Lady of Sorrows The Church traditionally dedicates the month of September to Our Lady of Sorrows. The Feast of the Triumph of the Cross is on September 14. Like many of the lesserknown Marian feasts, the Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows is tied to an event in the life of her Son. On September 14, we celebrate the instrument of Christ's victory over death; and the next day, we remember the suffering of Mary as she stood at the foot of the Cross and witnessed the torture and death of her Son. Page Six Prayer to Our Lady of Sorrows: Prepare my soul, O Sweet Virgin Mary, to receive the body of your Divine Son in Holy Communion. Prepare my heart as you yourself prepared to conceive Jesus in your womb. Adorn my heart with all the merits of your tender love and compassion and good works. That I may conceive Jesus in my heart, as you conceived Him in your womb. May I be made worthy to bear the fruit of Christ. When I receive you into my heart in Holy Communion, O Jesus, make it a fit abiding place for your Body. Amen. Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray for us. The Seven Sorrows of Mary The Prophecy of Simeon: Behold this child is set for the fall, and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and for a sign which shall be contradicted; and thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed. (Luke.2:34-35) The Flight into Egypt: When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him. (Mathew 2:13) The Loss of the Holy Child at Jerusalem for three days: After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety (Lk 2:46, 48) Meeting Jesus on His way to Calvary: A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him. Jesus turned to them and said, Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children, for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.' At that time people will say to the mountains, Fall upon us!' and to the hills, Cover us!' for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry? (Luke 23: 27-31) Standing at the Foot of the Cross: Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, Woman, behold, your son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold, your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home (Jn 19:25 27) Jesus being taken from the Cross: After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took his body (Jn 19:38) The Burial of Christ: The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it, they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils (Lk 23:55 56)
