Page Two From the Principal's Desk Thanksgiving is one of my favorite times of the year! It is a holiday time solely dedicated to showing gratitude, gathering with family, and enjoying delicious food. As we approach the holiday this week, I am reminded of the story from chapter 17 of Luke s Gospel of Jesus healing the ten lepers. Although ten were healed, only one came back praising God. He threw himself at Jesus s feet and thanked Him. What a show of gratitude and humility to lie prostrate before Jesus! Meanwhile Jesus questioned why the other nine did not return. So often in our lives we display gratitude and praise God in big matters: the healthy birth of a child, a successful surgery, finding gainful employment, etc. But how many times do we act as the other nine lepers and take for granted the many blessings in our lives? Working with children everyday serves as a great reminder for me of the things that I easily take for granted. Our children in their innocence and awe can be models for us. They remind me to be thankful for the air we breathe, the ladybugs they spotted at recess, their peanut butter & jelly sandwich. I encourage you to take a moment to wake your inner child and reflect on gratitude for blessings big and small. 6 Whole Community Faith Sharing Gospel: Mark 13:24-32 SAFEGUARD OUR CHILDREN Page Five Reflection: Jesus tells his disciples of what will happen before His Second Coming. There will be great tribulations and the sky will darken. What makes it even more ominous is that nobody will know exactly when this will happen except for God Himself. The Great Thomas Aquinas was once speaking with his Dominican brothers who asked, "If the world were to end in 15 minutes, what would you do?" He answered, "I would continue doing exactly what I am doing right now." Clearly, Thomas Aquinas knew he was doing God's work and was confident in his faith. Question: How can I be ready for Jesus to come again? Faith Response: I will make changes in my life to ensure that I am living a life worthy to stand before Jesus at any given time. Get Your Family on the Same Page About Social Media Social media is one of the leading forms of communication and connection in our world today, but it has dangerous side effects if used carelessly or improperly. Social media platforms can be used to solicit minors, distribute drugs, share pornography and more. If your family does not have a social media safety policy in place, work to establish one immediately. Rules such as no direct messages from anyone you don t know in person and no private or hidden contact with anyone are important. Establish regular check-ins to make sure that the rules are being followed to see what your children are viewing. 7 Page Six Upcoming Events The Giving Tree Saturday, November 24th there will be three special Christmas Trees filled with ornaments. These ornaments will have a child s first name, age and their requests to Santa. If you wish, you can take one home, buy up to two gifts for the child, one need and one want, wrap it, circle the contents on the tag and bring it to church with the tag by Sunday, December 3rd. What a wonderful way to brighten a child s Christmas! Our Lady of Mount Carmel parishioners will deliver several of these gifts to families. Santa s Workshop Planning for our annual Santa s Workshop is well underway! On December 3 rd 6:00 8:00 pm and December 4 th 3:15 5:00pm, we invite children from grades 6 th 12 th to come decorate the parish hall so it will look like Santa s Workshop, help paint, repair, wrap, and tag toys. Christmas music and refreshments will add to our festivities. We are in need of gently used toys to be repaired or painted. Please check your closets once, twice for toys your children may have outgrown. The toys may be dropped off at the Convent Carport before Sunday, November 18th. These toys will be given to economically challenged children living in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara. Christmas Potluck Join us for our parish potluck on Saturday, December 15 th at 6:00pm. Please bring your favorite food dish, enough to serve 8 people. Drinks will be provided.
