May she lead you now, throughout your life, TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The cathedral is a treasure in a diocese and in our tradition. It is not simply a big church, as some say; some parish churches are larger. What makes a cathedral is the presence of the chair, called a cathedra (Latin for seat) reserved for the bishop. There are many instances in our country of a local church (diocese) outgrowing a cathedral. In Baltimore and St. Louis, the former cathedrals are historic treasures in the heart of the old city, but new and larger structures now function as the seat of the bishop. When a bishop dies or retires, it is said that the seat is vacant, and when the new bishop is installed, the central ritual is the moment when the decree of the Holy Father is read and the new bishop is escorted to the cathedra. No one but the bishop sits in the cathedra during a ritual, but in Los Angeles the cathedra in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is accessible, and no one seems to mind when a visitor tries the cathedra out for the bishop s point of view. THE POPE S CHOIR FIRST-EVER U.S. NATIONAL TOUR JULY 23rd in LOS ANGELES At the MICROSOFT THEATER Tickets for the Sistine Chapel Choir s first-ever performance in Los Angeles are on sale. The Pope s Choir from Rome will perform during their muchanticipated U.S. National Tour at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on July 23rd. Tickets are available at SistineChapelChoirTour.com or AXS.com. Serving as the Pope s personal choir, today, the 1500-year old Sistine Chapel Choir is the oldest and most respected active choir in the world today. Officially known as the Cappella Musicale Pontificia Sistina, part of the Choir s significance is due to its endurance through several centuries, including the Renaissance, which was a fundamental period for the Choir as it found its theatre in the Sistine Chapel. The choir is comprised of a highly accomplished group of 20 professional singers, chosen from all around the world. The treble section, known as the Pueri Cantores, is made up of 35 boys aged between 9 and 13, who are selected through rigorous auditions. They are known for playing an active part during papal celebrations in St Peter s Basilica and in the Sistine Chapel itself. 7 Page Six SAFEGUARD OUR CHILDREN Did you know? Safety Trumps Good Manners SUMMER BEGINS!! The last day of school for our students is this Wednesday, June 13th. Please keep the students, their parents and families, and our teachers in your prayers, and ask that God keep them all safe this summer as they enjoy their break from studies. ~~~~~~ NOW ENROLLING We are still accepting applications for school year. If you are interested in hearing more about our school or know a family who would be interested in OLMCS, have them contact us at info@mountcarmelschool.net. As parents/caregivers, we teach children to say please and thank you, to play nicely, and to respect other adults. It is also key to stress the importance of safety, and let children know that it is okay to be impolite if they feel threatened or scared. Children should know that it s okay to say NO if someone is asking them to do something they don t feel comfortable doing, and that setting boundaries by saying things like -- Don t touch me there, or I don t like that -- are not rude, but in fact necessary for their safety. For a copy of the complete VIRTUS article Exceptions for Children on Society s Rules about Being Polite visit Community Faith Sharing archdiocese.org/org/protecting/pages/virtusreflection: Jesus explains what "family" means in a Current-Online-Articles.aspx re-defining of family. We are all brothers and sisters in faith. "Family" is really an expression of commitment to honor and love God as a community. This writing gives us a window of deeper understanding that might be consistent with the message Jesus is conveying. All of us who follow the teachings are "family" and we should treat each other as such. Reflection Question: In what ways can I widen the circle of my family to include someone in need? Faith Response: I will reach out in Faith to those, especially whose faith is being tested, and who are going through hard times.
