1 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church Erected in 1936, the entire structure reflects the architectural style developed by missionaries, combining the building patterns of the Pueblo Indians with Spanish-Colonial design. Even the landscaping, with carefully selected shrubs and trees, is typical. Priest Fr. 2 Page One Reflection & Prayer Adoration "The Eucharist is connected with the Passion...To make sure that we do not forget, Jesus gave us the Eucharist as a memorial of his love...when you look at the Crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then, when you look at the Sacred Host, you understand how much Jesus loves you now." - Mother Teresa Prayer and meditation before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament are great ways to spend some special time with Him. You can ask Him for graces for yourself or for loved ones, reflect on His Word, or just keep Him company! And it s no bother for Jesus. In fact, He very much wants to see you! Adoration will be held every Wednesday during Lent, from 5pm to 8pm in the Main Church. Come spend time with our Lord. Stations of the Cross & Soup Dinners Fridays during Lent except Good Friday. Stations start at 6pm in the Chapel followed by Soup & Supper in the Parish Hall. Soup makers are needed. Please contact Sr. Kathleen Patrice at 805/ if you can make soup or sign-up on the sheets on the tables by all the Church doors. Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence from meat for everyone who is 14 years or older. Good Friday is also days of fasting for people between the ages of 18 thru 59. They are asked to eat only one full meal and two partial meals on these two days. Lenten Reflection Credo In Unum Deum So you say, whether you are an adult or child, that you say all of your prayers every day. You have a right to feel good about your Lenten preparation if you do. However, do you really know what all of those words mean? When you think about them, do they make a lot of sense? You know, there is one other prayer that you hear every Sunday that might make more sense to you. Do you know what it is? Yes! It is the Creed, or Credo. There are two Creeds. The Apostles Creed has been attributed to St. Ambrose in about 390 AD. It is said that he may have taken ideas from each of the original Apostles, but true origins are vague. The Nicene Creed was written after the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, as an effort to summarize the true teachings of the Church after a period of heresy. Usually, the Apostles Creed is said on Sundays and is the first prayer in the Rosary. The Nicene Creed is said on special Feast Days. Both Creeds are similar, and express our beliefs about the Father, Son, Holy Spirit and the Catholic Church. Either is an excellent prayer to include in your Lenten prayers. I believe in God, the Father Almighty creator of heaven and earth. HOLY WEEK SERVICES PALM SUNDAY March 25th The Blessing of the Palms is before the Vigil Mass in the side courtyard. Palms will be distributed at all the Masses. Thank You! Page Two Whole Community Faith Sharing Reflection Question: How do I think Jesus draws people to Himself? How can I help others whose words or actions say We should like to see Jesus? Faith Response: I will name one area in my life that I need to let go of, to die to, in order to rise with new life. Reflection: The simple thing we can do to help ourselves and others to know Jesus is to live a life based on servitude as much as possible. People whose lives are centered on service will find communion with Jesus in this life and the next. Jesus tells us there is suffering and sacrifice along the way in living a life of service. We shouldn t just do things for others when it s convenient for us but even in times when it s a sacrifice for us. Judgment begins in this life, not just after we die. The seductive powers of the world around us are strong. There can be no compromise. This truth should sustain us as we contemplate Jesus death and exaltation. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Year B of the Lectionary has the Letter to the Ephesians today. Ephesus, today in Turkey, was in the first century a great Greek city, the center for the worship of Diana, the goddess of the hunt. It was a vast city even by modern standards, having nearly half a million people in the time of Paul. Yet that was a time of economic recession and moral decay. No wonder Saint Paul stayed here the longest. It gave him an enormous and religiously curious audience. His preaching stirred up the artisans who depended on the pilgrims who came to honor (and buy mementos of) seventeen gods and goddesses enshrined in the city s temples. You can still see the open-air theater where Paul s homily triggered a riot. Paul did have success here, and many conversions among Jews and Gentiles. They seem to have struggled with hope, perhaps because of their suffering from economic woes and isolation. Some old traditions say that the Apostle John lived out his days here, and that the Blessed Mother was cared for by him. There s no biblical basis for this, but it is certain that a small house just outside the city has been treasured by Christians and Muslims for centuries as the last dwelling of Mary. Long ago, the harbor silted up and the city was nearly abandoned, becoming a small village. As is so often the case, that accident of history preserved the ancient city, so that archeologists have been very successful in revealing ancient Christian sites. One such site is the Church of Mary, probably the first church to be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, and the site of the Council of Ephesus in 431. Today, a visit to Ephesus is one of the most rewarding journeys for any pilgrim. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. NOT ENOUGH It is not enough for me to love God, if my neighbor does not love God. St. Vincent de Paul

Common Tricks Strangers Use to Lure Children Are you familiar with the news show segments testing children's safety knowledge? They often feature "strangers" trying to lure children with offers of ice cream, modeling contracts, or other goodies. They know that while many children are taught to avoid strangers, they may not be taught to recognize abduction tactics. For more information on common tricks predators may use to lure children from The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, visithttp:// TODAY S READINGS First Reading The wrath and the mercy of the LORD are revealed in the exile and liberation of the Chosen People (2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23) or 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a. Psalm Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you! (Psalm 137) or Psalm 23. Second Reading God, who is rich in mercy, brought us to life with Christ (Ephesians 2:4-10) or Ephesians 5:8-14. 8 Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel There is a tradition which may not be historical that Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, a leader of the Carmelites, and gave him a scapular, telling him to promote devotion to it. The scapular is a modified version of Mary s own garment. It symbolizes her special protection and calls the wearers to consecrate themselves to her in a special way. The scapular reminds us of the gospel s call to prayer and penance a call that Mary models in a splendid way.
