Greetings Sir Knights, Blessings to you and your families, may you be enjoying the Kingdom of God. Have you bought something for your wife yet? Bobba did, I asked Bobba whether he had bought his wife anything for Valentine's Day. 'Yes,' came the answer from Bobba who is a bit of a chauvinist, 'I've bought her a bag and a belt.' 'Why, that was very kind of you, Bobba' I said, 'I hope she likes them and appreciate the thought.' Bobba smiled as he replied, 'So do I, and I hope the vacuum cleaner will work better now too.' First of all, on behalf of the officers and members of Assembly 1855 I would like to congratulate and welcome our new Sir Knights exemplified January 24th at St Brigid Parish. (See photo on page 2.) I believe about 80 candidates were exemplified that day. Congratulations also to our new Master, SK Joe Rodriguez and his helpers for a near perfect exemplification. Try indifference, Pope says by Elise Harris Vatican City, Jan 27, 2015 / 05:35 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The globalization of indifference was at the heart of Pope Francis Lenten message, in which he urged faithful to fight individualism with merciful hearts that are more attentive to the needs of others. (Jesus) is interested in each of us; his love does not allow him to be indifferent to what happens to us, the Pope noted in his Jan. 27 Lenten message, saying that often times when we live a healthy and comfortable lifestyle, we forget about others. I was hoping we would have a response by now so we could have that done this Columbian year. We ll just keep praying for a response. I have heard that patience is a virtue. SHIRTS and HATS We have contacted a new embroider who promises to be quicker than the last one. We will be filling the already ordered shirts and will be taking orders for assembly shirts, hats and aprons. Please see Rudy Tabbutt, Faithful Comptroller, at the business meeting, February 12th, to place your order. SK EMIL KRUCIAK Brother SK Emil Kruciak Passed away Monday February 2nd. I ed the assembly members requesting a turn-out in tux regalia. Aside from the members called to be pallbearers there were seven others who turned out; SK Dan Peres, SK Henry Mendez, SK Rudy Tabbutt, SK SK Emil Kruciak, PFN Javier Martinez, Sir Knight Ernie Peña and SK Sam Kolodziej. The pallbearers were SK Al Berger, John Pollok, SK Peter Snoga, SK Gilbert Keller SK Jerome Bently and SK Theo Gerlich; Honorary pallbearers were SK Doc Sells and myself, Pedro Ybarra Brother SK Ysaac Cortez Hospitalized SK Ysaac had a heart attack January 29th and was in the hospital until February 2nd. Apparently he had a clogged artery in or by the heart, the doctors did a procedure to open it up and he says he feels fine now. But what a scare for his family and friends. As you know Ysaac just went through a major transplant not too long ago after going dialysis for a long time. He s just a tough old guy with a strong will to keep on living. Get well buddy and we ll keep praying for you. FUND RAISER HELPERS Thank you for helping in our continuous fund raising efforts Sir Knights: Gregory L Haag, Santos Estrada, Ysaac Cortez, Rudy M Tabbutt, Al Berger, Raymond Buyaky, Jesse Aguilar, Joe Moncada, Tommy Cavazos, Henry Mendez, Victor Quesnot. Also SK Jose Montez from Council continue to help out regularly. As I mentioned in last month s Beacon I would come up with a schedule of all members to help out in our fund raising effort, included in this beacon is the schedule I came up with. As I mention on the letter on the schedule, the schedule is not perfect because I don t know all of you but it s a start and it can be adjusted as we go along. If you find it difficult to work your schedule please notify me so I can make adjustments. It is also important that if you cannot make your scheduled time to call someone to take your place so we don t end up short handed as we have been many times. I had been relying on volunteers to just show up but that hasn t been working, I m hoping that all of you cooperate with the schedule we can all pitch in on helping. 5 Page 5 SK Greg Haag, Faithful Captain 2015; Wow. Greetings Brothers, Sir Knights, HAPPY NEW YEAR!! It seems like yesterday that the world as we knew it was coming to the end at Y2K! Do you remember that debacle? My brothers, that was 15 years ago and I think the world is still spinning! Most people start out the New Year with great expectations. As Charles Dickens said, "It was the best of times and it was the worst of times!" All at the same time! Most of us decide that the New Year is a good time to get our health straightened out, maybe lose a few or maybe start a new walking plan! We might even be swayed into joining a Health Spa or Gold's Gym. I mean every other commercial on radio and TV has some actor with perfect 6 pack abs, beautiful buns and a to-die-for body! All are explaining that you too can have this Adonis like body and dazzling bright smile!! Just join the club no contracts needed! There is an expression and it goes like this: Think Globally and Act locally! Right now it seems to this writer anyway, that the world is going to hell in a handbasket! We are living in a virtual slaughter house. We can't do much about that, but we can do a lot right here in our own community! So why not pick out one or two of the too-many-to-listhere projects that our brother knights are currently engaged in and join in! One doesn't know what one can do until one does it! Oh yeah, back to that health improvement thing. First, forget about joining a club. Save your money for a more worthy project. Second, mind your peas and cucumbers. Eat less meat and bread and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Three, do more exercise and eat less food! Four, start a simple walking plan. Outside is best, but don't get run over by a distracted talking or texting driver!! And finally and MOST IMPORTANTLY, SPEND MUCH MORE TIME READING YOUR BIBLE AND SPREADING THE GOOD WORD AND WHEN NECESSARY USE YOUR MOUTH!! If you do these (oh so simple things that everybody already knows) I guarantee that your MIND, BODY AND SOUL will improve far more than joining any club or spa! So what are you waiting for? Let's get started! 6 Page 6 Page 4 Continued from page 4 We are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure...our heart grows cold, he observed, saying that today this selfish attitude of indifference has taken on global proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a globalization of indifference. The Roman Pontiff s Jan. 27 message, titled after the biblical passage Make Your Hearts Firm from James Chapter 5 verse 8, was given as a precursor for the start of the Church s Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18. Lent, he said, is a time of grace in which we encounter the love of the Lord, who first served us through his life and the washing of the disciples feet before his passion, and ultimately in his sacrificial death on the cross. God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation, the pontiff explained, saying that one of the most urgent challenges of today s world and the one to which he dedicated his Lenten message is precisely the globalization of indifference. This globalization of indifference is a reality that Christians must confront by going outside of themselves, he said, and highlighted three biblical passages he said would help to resist the temptation to withdraw and remain closed inside of ourselves. If one member suffers, all suffer together from St. Paul s first letter to the Corinthians reminds us of the Church, the Pope explained, saying that the love of God breaks through the barriers of indifference we frequently put up. But we can only bear witness to what we ourselves have experienced, he said, and encouraged faithful to turn to the sacraments during Lent particularly the Eucharist in order to better imitate the Lord. During Mass we become what we receive: the Body of Christ. In this body there is no room for the indifference which so often seems to possess our hearts, the Pope explained. He then pointed to the verse in Genesis Chapter 4 when God asks Cain Where is your brother? This passage, he said, is representative of the various parishes and Christian communities around the world. Do these ecclesial structures enable us to experience being part of one body? A body which receives and shares what God wishes to give? Or do we take refuge in a universal love that would embrace the whole world, while failing to see the Lazarus sitting before our closed doors? the pontiff asked. In order to both receive what God gives to us and make it bear fruit in our communities we need to go beyond the boundaries of the physical Church, the Pope said, noting that this is first done through our prayers to the saints in heaven, who intercede for us with joy. Secondly, a particular parish or community can cross these boundaries by engaging in the life of the greater society of which it is a part, especially with the poor and those who are far away. The Church is missionary by her very nature, he said, and commissioned parishes and communities not to remain self-enclosed, but go out to every nation and people so that they therefore become islands of mercy in the midst of the sea of indifference! Pope Francis then pointed to the biblical verse in James Make your hearts firm from which the title of his message is taken, saying that it speaks to the temptation for individual Christians to become indifferent. Flooded with news reports and troubling images of human suffering, we often feel our complete inability to help, he observed. Both praying together as a community and performing small acts of charity are concrete ways that can prevent us from getting caught up in this spiral of distress and powerlessness, the Pope explained. He then drew attention to the 24 Hours for the Lord initiative of the Pontifical Council for the New Evangelization. Set to take place March 13-14, in the middle of Lent, confessions will be available for the entire 24 hour period. The Pope, who is set to preside over a penitential liturgy for the event, expressed his hope that it will be observed throughout the Church, also at the diocesan level (as) a sign of this need for prayer. Also noting the importance of conversion, the Bishop of Rome said that seeing the suffering of others inevitably reminds us of our dependency on God, as well as on our brothers and sisters, and encouraged all to ask for God s grace in accepting their limitations. If we do this, he said, we will trust in the infinite possibilities which God s love holds out to us (and) we will also be able to resist the temptation of thinking that by our own efforts we can save the world and ourselves. Pope Francis concluded his message by praying that during Lent, each person receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.

It has now been corrected so please pay your dues now and help us save stamp money. Membership Dues of twenty two dollars ($22) and Honorary Life dues of ten dollars ($10) are now due and are being collected. Our Assembly s Faithful Comptroller, SK Rudy Tabbutt had surgery on his shoulder and is now back. He will continue to collect dues. If you are disabled get a disabled letter from your doctor and give it to your Financial. He will assist you in getting you on the disabled list so you don t have to pay dues. Color Corps Certification The first twelve assembly members to sign up and complete their training for certification will qualify for District Fall-Out eligibility. You do not have to have cape and sword to join the prestigious Certified Color Corps Membership. Call SK Jesse Aguilar, CCC to sign up. It is mandatory that the CCC and the CCC assistants to be certified. All certified Color Corps Membership will receive a certified membership card and Honor Guard lapel pin for recognition. As well as be eligible to participate in district fallouts. As soon as the group has received their training they will be certified by the Master or one of his district marshals. Let s be first in the district to attain Certified Status. 9 Why I joined the Knights of Columbus I joined the Knights of Columbus because it is a Catholic organization that supports Catholic Social Teachings and supports the Bishops of the Catholic Church. And resources are dedicated to promoting that teaching on moral issues. It is also is a Catholic family fraternal service organization that provides members and their families with volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, their communities, families and young people. I joined the 4th Degree because it s primary purpose is to encourage active Catholic citizenship and fosters the spirit of patriotism in members and the community at large. The Certified Color Corps members exemplify all the principles of our Order: Charity - by the gift of their time and energies necessary to practice, perfect and perform the ceremonials and sword drill; Unity by the united efforts of Sir Knights to practice and perfect a coordinated drill for the good of the Church and the Order; Fraternity by expressing an Esprit de Corps, sharing a common desire for drill excellence and camaraderie; and Patriotism by performing precision drill as a salute to God and to country and visually exhibiting a love for both. The public appearance of Fourth Degree Knights as a Color Corps at religious and civic functions is an important activity of our assembly. The colorful capes and chapeaux add dignity and the pride of Church and country to any event. By our public demonstrations our loyalty bring credit to ourselves and to the Knights of Columbus as a whole. Helping out every once in a while at our assembly s main fund raising function is a demonstration of us taking advantage of our volunteer opportunities in service to the Catholic Church, our communities, families and young people. That s where the funds go that we raise aside from the Chalices we will donate to priests to remember you when they say Mass when you go home to be with the Lord. Please keep the schedule on the opposite side for your reference. If you cannot make your appointed volunteer time to serve, please be responsible and call someone to take your place, as your help is really needed. Also your scheduled time will appear in the Beacon calendar and you will get a phone call and/or an as a reminder. This will be a cake walk if we all do our part.
