Most Reverend Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, Retired Bishop John McCarthy, Worthy Master, Reverend Fathers, Sir Knights and Ladies: Sir Knights Call to Action We have about 2 months to submit new candidates for the 4 th Degree Exemplification October 20, 2012 in Harker Heights. How are you recruiting in your councils? As I have said, this is the most important time to be part of the Patriotic Order with government actions pending in many areas that will impact your religious freedom and the wellbeing of our nation as we know it. Contact your council Financial Secretary and ask them to send a letter to 3 rd degree members or better yet contact individual council members and ask them to join. If we can get just 4 new members from each council we will make a difference. We will have a new membership information meeting September 25 and need all the Form 4s before this date. From 4s are available from our Faithful Comptroller Mike Moreno, be sure your council Financial Secretaries have Form 4s on hand. Prayers & Petitions In September your Faithful Navigator will be going on a Pilgrimage in Europe which will include stops at the Vatican, Medjugorje and Krakow. If you would like to write a personal intention and give them to me I will leave them at Holy Sites along the Pilgrimage. August 15 Assumption of Mary Did you Know The doctrine of the Assumption says that at the end of her life on earth Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven, just as Enoch, Elijah, and perhaps others had been before her. It's also necessary to keep in mind what the Assumption is not. Some people think Catholics believe Mary "ascended" into heaven. That's not correct. Christ, by his own power, ascended into heaven. Mary was assumed or taken up into heaven by God. Continued on page 2

The Church has never formally defined whether she died or not, and the integrity of the doctrine of the Assumption would not be impaired if she did not in fact die, but the almost universal consensus is that she did die. Pope Pius XII, in Munificentissimus Deus (1950), defined that Mary, "after the completion of her earthly life" (note the silence regarding her death), "was assumed body and soul into the glory of heaven." There is also what might be called the negative historical proof for Mary's Assumption. It is easy to document that, from the first, Christians gave homage to saints, including many about whom we now know little or nothing. Cities vied for the title of the last resting place of the most famous saints. Rome, for example, houses the tombs of Peter and Paul, Peter's tomb being under the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. In the early Christian centuries relics of saints were zealously guarded and highly prized. The bones of those martyred in the Coliseum, for instance, were quickly gathered up and preserved there are many accounts of this in the biographies of those who gave their lives for the faith. It is agreed upon that Mary ended her life in Jerusalem, or perhaps in Ephesus. However, neither those cities nor any other claimed her remains, though there are claims about possessing her (temporary) tomb. And why did no city claim the bones of Mary? Apparently because there weren't any bones to claim, and people knew it. 3 The Sir Knight News Page 3 F ROM OUR FAITHFUL CAPTAIN... The Assembly has participated in one Fallout since our last meeting in July, and that was on July 21 for The Mens Mass at The Cathedral. We had a very good turnout with 13 Sir Knights present. The next scheduled Fallout is: August 5, 2012 Major Degree Kyle Fallout at 7:15, 8:00 Mass This may have passed by the time your newsletter arrives, but you will have received a reminder from me by . In conversation with our FN, we would like to ask that when you are participating in the Fallouts that you make an effort to be on time. This would give our Color Corp Commanders enough time to give his instructions on the procedures we will be using for the day. Looking forward, there are no scheduled Fallouts listed for the rest of August, or September. That could change, and if so the Assembly will be notified at either the Business Meeting or by . This is not a full dress Fallout, but we will be in Social Dress only, no Regalia. That means Tuxedos and Social Baldric. We will sit as a group in the front of the Church in a spot reserved for us. 4 Page 4 Volume 9, Issue 2 RIGHT TO LIFE! A LEGAL OR MORAL ISSUE?. Brother Knights, I d like to voice my feelings on this subject. Much too long have we battled our Right to Life campaign looking at and worrying about the Legal side on whether or not a law will make it legal to have an abortion or not. Here is some food for thought; we have thousands of laws on our books and I would bet that every one of them have been broken, and by whom? Those who have little or no moral convictions or by good people that have been pushed beyond the limit. Even the simplest of laws to follow like speed limits and stop lights are constantly violated and people killed. Stop and look at the problem from a different prospective, if you are taught and believe something is wrong you won t do it. None of our current laws have stopped some women from having illegal abortions nor will a law to allow it make a moral woman have one just because she can. It also would not make a moral doctor perform one just because it s legal. Our efforts need to be geared toward restoring the moral fiber to this world so people do what is right and proper because they believe that is the moral thing to do. It is a foolish as believing banning guns will stop the killing, as they like all the other weapons (vehicles being the biggest), are only the instruments used by those who have lost or never had any moral convictions. What we do have a big obligation to stop, are laws that require us to kill weather in an abortion or the elderly or sick because of some health insurance plan that demands it! There has been a steady decline in the world s moral fiber since O Hara started the atheist movement and started removing God from our Nation, and now with the reach out and touch somebody that really opened the world to what was otherwise hidden from view. Some has been good but I dare say most has not. Again, is it our moral fiber that takes folks to the dark side of Cyber-space even though illegal, I think more the lack of! Pray God give us the strength to restore the morals in this world and our country. Remember He gave us free will so don t ask Him to do it, but to give us the strength to get it done by guiding that free will back in the right, morally right, direction! Since our founding by the Venerable Servant of God, Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882, the Knights of Columbus have grown to 1.8 million members around the world and have touched the lives of those in need every day. Because of this we have become a valuable resource to the Catholic Church and the communities that we serve. As an organization, our best work is in the parish serving our pastor or being the extraordinary influence that we have on a society because, We Are Called the Knights of Columbus. Texas has always been in the forefront of the Order and to borrow a phrase, we have not had our Best Year Yet, because we continue to meet our challenges head-on with a Yes We Can Do Attitude and working together as a team we will succeed. Our plan of action for this fraternal year is to continue growth at all levels and to be the best in the Order by June 30, Sir Knights we have a chance to reach out and make a difference in this world and also enjoy the fellowship of the other brothers.
