2 Page 2 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23, 2018 The Oscars. The Super Bowl. TV talent shows. Your son s Little League championship. We live in a culture set on competition. The desire to be the best goes beyond hobbies and into politics, the corporate world, and parenting comparisons at the park. This desire is as old as the human race, and it surely arose in Jesus day. While Biblical society was significantly less open and upwardly mobile than our own, power was attractive. From what we know, many of Jesus disciples had come from lowly backgrounds. Now they followed an increasingly popular rabbi who seemed primed to do something big. Jesus does his best to dissuade their high hopes by prophesying his own defeat. The Son of Man is to be handed over and they will kill him. Internalizing the message proves challenging for the disciples, and their attention remains fixed on earthly glory. They [discuss] among themselves on the way who was the greatest. True to style, Jesus flips their pretensions on their heads. If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. We have heard these Biblical principles before. Do we believe them? In our professional lives, do we do whatever we can to get ahead, or are we concerned with the entire team succeeding? In the lives of our children, are we more concerned with victory or with building character? Jesus doesn t condemn success, but he reframes it. Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me. Today s Gospel is a reality check. In God s eyes, our success will not be measured by worldly output alone but by how much love and service we offer to others in the process. Cycles of Faith The Gospel of St. Mark is generally considered the Gospel about discipleship. Jesus is presented as a teacher leading the new community of his disciples. Jesus taught them what the Kingdom of God was all about; and as a result he would suffer and die in the hands of the powerful. In this Sunday s Gospel episode Jesus taught his disciples the importance of living a life of service and humility as pathways to true greatness in the Kingdome of God. Jesus was aware that like in any organization there would be struggle for greatness and power among his disciples. The church, indeed, had gone through the struggle for power throughout the centuries. One very important element for a community or organization to survive would be the role of leadership. What should a Christian leader be like? Those who have been given the gift of leadership must imitate the simplicity of small children; desire to serve and not to be served. This is the call for all of us who want follow the Lord. Jesus tells us that we too can to serve and love him in our poor brothers and sisters. Fr. Rick CONVOCATION WEEK This is a special retreat week for Fr. Rick and all the priests of the Diocese of San Diego. They will spend the week together, away from their parishes in prayer, meetings and workshops. Please keep them in your prayers. PLEASE NOTE: We will have our regular Mass schedule this week. FYI...The Adams Avenue Street Fair is next Saturday and Sunday. Plan more time to arrive at Mass because of the extra traffic in the area. St. Didacus LECTOR Workshop Saturday, September 29th 9am-noon in the Parish Hall Loving God Through Service to Others Take some time today to walk around the Ministry Fair and talk to our volunteers and learn about all the wonderful things happening in our parish! See if there is a good fit for YOU in any of our parish ministries and organizations. All Lectors are encouraged to attend this workshop given by Deacon Juan Fausto. The workshop will be a refresher course in the Diocesan standards for Lectors. Daily Mass, weekend Mass and all Lectors are invited. You are in luck! A CION (Christ In Our Neighborhood) group is starting at St. Didacus Parish on Monday, October 1st in the Parish Hall 7-8pm. With lesson plans provided by our Diocese, we will reflect on the Scriptures for the upcoming Sunday and share in fellowship. In October, we ll meet on the 1st, 8th, 22nd & 29th. Divine Mercy Conference The 20th Annual Divine Mercy Conference will be October 13, 2018 at the San Juan Center at Mission San Antonio de Pala, doors open at 8 am, Rosary at 8:40 am and the Conference begins at 9 am. 5 Page 5 Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 23, 2018 Several parishioners dressed in festive outfits last Sunday to welcome Fr. Vincent Anadi who celebrated the 8:30am Mass. Fr. Vincent is visiting from Nigeria. He has spent time here at St. Didacus during his visits over the past several years. We look forward to seeing him again on his next trip to San Diego. V Encuentro Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel & Raphael, Archangels Saturday, September 29th On this day, we celebrate the feast of these three archangels who are the great heralds of salvation and defenders against the power of evil. St. Michael is guardian and defender of the Church, from its roots in Israel to the Church today and beyond. In Hebrew, his name means who is like God? St. Gabriel, whose name means hero of God, announces that John the Baptist will be born to Elizabeth and Zechariah. He is entrusted with the most important task of revealing to Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Then there is St. Raphael, whose name is Hebrew for God has healed. He is named in Tobit 12 as the one standing in the presence of God and in 1 Enoch (early Jewish writing) as the healer of the earth. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that, "the existence of the spiritual, non-corporeal beings that Sacred Scripture usually calls "angels" is a truth of faith. The witness of Scripture is as clear as the unanimity of Tradition." The Fifth National Encuentro of Hispanic/Latino Ministry (V Encuentro) is a historic ecclesial gathering of 3,000 Hispanic/Latino Ministry leaders/delegates from dioceses, ecclesial movements, schools, universities and Catholic organizations from across the country. It is taking place this weekend in Grapevine, Texas. We have 3 delegates from our parish community attending the national meeting. Oscar Rodriguez, Guillermina Delgado and Elena Platas are representing our parish at this important event. Let us pray for them that their attendance will bear fruit and new ideas to enrich the life of our community. Elena, Guille & Oscar look forward to representing our parish at this historic event.
