1 Page 2 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 19, 2014 Pointing to the Lamb of God Our baptismal task is to deepen continually our own understanding of who Jesus is and to make him known, and to deepen our own understanding of our Christian identity as the beloved daughters and sons of God, as the Body of Christ. Like John, we go from not knowing to seeing to testifying. More than likely, we aren t called to testify to the Son of God by going out and baptizing or doing great things. We testify to Jesus identity and carry forth his saving mission by being faithful to the ordinary things in life, by doing God s will. The revelation of Jesus identity how he is made known in the world is mediated by the way we live every day. Thus we, too, must become more fully the Lamb of God. This means that like Jesus, we must be willing to die to ourselves for the sake of others. Like John the Baptist to whom Jesus came toward, opportunities to die to self come to us every day. Like John, we simply need to open our eyes to recognize and respond to opportunities to carry forth Jesus ministry to others. Our own testimony to Jesus presence and our own understanding of who he is becomes known through the good we do for others. Living Liturgy John the Baptist had the great honor of preparing the way for Jesus. Through John's preaching and baptizing, the people's hearts were ready for the coming of the Lamb of God. John had spent his entire life listening to God's word. And when Jesus, the Messiah, finally came, God helped John to recognize him. Very often we get so busy and noisy that God's voice is completely drowned out. We are not always prepared to recognize Jesus in our daily lives. What will you do to become a better listener? Happy 100th Birthday to long-time parishioner Jim Barnes! Jim will celebrate his 100th birthday January 21st. He has been a parishioner here at St. Didacus since 1953 and has served our community in many ways through the years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, Italian Catholic Federation, the Saturday work crew and was an usher. His faithfulness to our parish has been a blessing and we wish him all the best on his birthday. Jim was the first parishioner to try out our new ramp in Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children Wednesday, January 22nd St. Didacus will observe this day with Eucharistic Adoration from 9am-7pm The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has designated January 22nd as a day of fasting and prayer focused on the unborn. As a community we will make this our focus with a day of Eucharistic Adoration beginning at 9:00am and ending at 7:00pm. Plan to spend some time with us that day to pray for the protection of the unborn of our society. There is a sign-up sheet at the entrance of the Church if you can spend an hour in Adoration. Next Sunday we kick off Catholic Schools Week and the celebration of the 75th anniversary of St. Didacus Catholic School. We ll have a celebratory Mass on Sunday, January 26th at 10am with Bishop Flores. The PTG will host a reception following the Mass. 4 Kid s Corner Page 5 Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 19, 2014 Ordinary Time: Winter, A Sense of the Season What do the words Ordinary Time mean? Dorothy Day said, The words Ordinary Time in our prayer books put me in a state of confusion and irritation. To me, no time is ordinary. She was right. The Ordinary in Ordinary Time refers to ordinal counted time, not to a lack of something to celebrate. The Roman document, General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar, says: Apart from those seasons having their own distinctive character [Advent, Christmastime, Lent, Triduum and Eastertime], 33 or 34 weeks remain in the yearly cycle that do not celebrate a specific aspect of the mystery of Christ. Rather, especially on the Sundays, they are devoted to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects. (#43) How do we celebrate the mystery of Christ in all its aspects? We gather every Sunday. Sunday is our original feast day. Christians have gathered every Sunday the day of Christ s resurrection, the first day of the week ever since there were Christians. Each year there are two blocks of Ordinary Time, one in the winter between Christmastime and Lent, and the other in summer and fall, from Pentecost through Christ the King. When we gather on Sundays in Ordinary Time, as always, we hear the scriptures proclaimed. We systematically read through the gospels. The first readings from the first testament of the Bible were chosen for their relationship to the gospel passages. The second readings come from the various letters of the second testament of the Bible. The mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolds. What is the heart of our Sunday celebration? We do our Eucharist; that is, we do our thanksgiving. We praise and thank God for all creation; we pray for the whole world, as we remember Christ s life, death and resurrection. We share the bread and wine, the body and blood. We are sent forth to be the body and blood of Christ in our homes, our workplaces, our neighborhoods, our towns, our cities, our country, our world. What happens in our churches every Sunday is the fruit of our week. What happens as the fruit of the week past is the beginning of the week to come. Sunday is simultaneously a point of arrival and departure for Christians on their way to the fullness of the kingdom. This is not ordinary at all. This is the fabric of Christian living. This famous civil rights leader once made a speech in which he said, I have a dream He dreamed of a world where there would be justice for black people and no more prejudice, a world where ALL people would work together to help each other. Wouldn t that be a great world to live in? Do your part to make Dr. King s dream become a reality. Each day treat all people with kindness and respect, no matter how different they are from you. 365 Fun Facts for Catholic Kids An Attitude of Gratitude Stewardship, and sacrificial giving which is one form of stewardship, has more to do with a spiritual approach than with a practical program. It touches one s interior self and inner attitude. It should deeply affect the manner in which we live and ideally become a way of life. The American bishops pastoral letter Stewardship: A Disciple s Response, addresses this topic: Disciples who practice stewardship recognize God as the origin of life, the giver of freedom, the source of all they have and are and will be...they know themselves to be recipients and caretakers of God s many gifts. 5 Pagina 6 Segundo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 19 de enero de 2014 Éste es el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo Las lecturas de este domingo tienen como eje transversal la invitación de Dios a toda la humanidad a asumir como propio el proyecto del Reino, de retarle, en libertad y sinceridad, a una manera nueva ser hombre y mujer, de ser creación y sociedad. El texto que leemos en la primera lectura forma parte del segundo Cántico del Siervo (Is 49,1 50,7) en el que se identifica al pueblo de Israel como el servidor de Dios; este Israel mencionado aquí no representa la totalidad del pueblo de Dios, sino que, tal vez, se refiera a aquella pequeña comunidad creyente desterrada en Babilonia, a ese grupo reducido que mantiene viva la esperanza y la fe. Ese grupo que, a pesar de estar lejos de su tierra, mantiene su confianza en el Señor, que es el que traerá la salvación a todo el pueblo de Israel y al mundo entero, pues Dios ha puesto sus ojos en él y le ha asignado la misión de expresar a toda la creación su deseo más profundo: salvar a todos sin excepción. El profeta que escribe este cántico marca una gran diferencia en cuanto a la comprensión de la salvación prometida por Dios; siendo el tiempo del exilio, el profeta anuncia una salvación para todas las naciones, no únicamente para el pueblo de Israel.
