1 Page 2 The Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time September 9, 2012 The Speechless Will Sing When Jesus heals the deaf man in today s Gospel, he is clearly fulfilling what had been prophesied by the prophet Isaiah: when God comes, the ears of the deaf will be unstopped, and the speechless will sing for joy. This is all well and good for the deaf fellow 2,000 years ago, we might say to ourselves, but what does it matter to us today? One way to reflect on today s readings is to consider the ways in which I myself am deaf and mute to the presence of God in my life: how I am too distracted to hear the beautiful sounds of creation; too preoccupied to pay attention to the goodness, the love, and the wisdom of others; too busy to listen to what the word of God is saying to me in my day-to-day life. We believe that because of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, God truly is present in our world and in our lives. This is the reality being pointed to when Jesus heals the deaf man in today s Gospel. Let us, therefore, listen attentively for God s presence in our lives, in the Scriptures, and in the Eucharist. For the more we come to know God s love for us, the more will we, like the speechless in Isaiah, sing for joy bringing this loving presence of God to our families, friends, and communities. Rev. Armand Mericer, OFM, Living with Christ of the faith. With his Apostolic Letter of October 11, 2011, Porta Fidei, Pope Benedict XVI declared that a "Year of Faith" will begin on October 11, 2012 and conclude on November 24, October 11, 2012, the first day of the Year of Faith, is the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council(Vatican II) and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge St. Didacus Parish is offering parishioners an opportunity to deepen their faith by attending this class: A Catholic Approach to Scripture (C hrs) taught by Barbara Kearns, M.T.S. Mondays, October 1 October 22, :30 p.m.- 9 p.m. in the St. Didacus Parish Hall This class is an introduction to the entire collection of books we recognize as God's Word in light of recent Church documents, to encourage familiarity with the Bible for today's Catholic. The cost for this 4-week class is $20 plus $10 for materials. There are two ways to register: You can register now at sddiregister or call the parish office and ask for Cindy. REGISTER NOW the class is just a few weeks away! September 11th Taize Prayer Service with the Choir Tuesday, Sept. 11th 7:30pm Join us for this special time of reflection as we gather to recall the need for prayers for peace, interfaith understanding, and remembrance. We think of all who lost their lives in the tragic events in New York, at the Pentagon and in that Pennsylvania field. We also hold in prayer those who lost loved ones parents, children, spouses, friends, co-workers and associates. Let us come together to remember their sacrifice and to pray for peace in our world. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. There are a lot of things we don't hear because we don t want to hear them. And more we don t say because of the cost of saying them. Take the cry of the poor, which Scripture assures us God hears plainly all the time. The poor will always be with us, and they ll never stop appealing to heaven for the help they need. But how often do we hear them? Do we attend to the news of their latest plight or turn it off as too depressing? Do we hear them out, but not respond? Do we have, but not share? No one is expected to give what they don t have, but all of us are expected to give what we can. That may be money, time, prayer, our voice, or our vote. It may even be our kindness in looking them in the eye with respect when we tell them we don t have anything in our pockets to offer. What may God be saying to you now, that you don t want to hear? What may God be asking you to say that you prefer not to utter aloud? exploring the Sunday readings

The items we use the most are: canned soup, canned beans, canned tuna or meats, macaroni and cheese and canned fruit. You can bring your donations to the Parish Office. Living by the truth takes time, effort, and perseverance: it has to begin in our own hearts, in the small daily sacrifices required if we are to be faithful to God s law, in the little acts by which we demonstrate that we love our neighbors. Mary, standing at the foot of the cross, participated in her Son s work of redemption by uniting her pain and sorrows to those of Jesus, thus offering her life as a spiritual sacrifice to the Lord. Today we look to her as an example of how to suffer well, and we ask her to pray for us and offer us her motherly comfort and support. Sourcebook 2012 Are You Registered to Vote?
