2 Page 2 Pentecost Sunday June 4, 2017 Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, Peace be with you. Then, he said it again. And then, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Jesus brings peace, and he brings the Holy Spirit. Peace, in fact, is one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Today, on this feast of Pentecost, we remember the dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit that came upon those first apostles and the peace that came along with it. But we do more than remember. We also celebrate the presence of this same Spirit in our midst. Through the sacrament of baptism, every Christian receives the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in his or her soul. Thus, the gift of peace is already ours! The question is whether or not we have really begun to appreciate and utilize this most precious gift. Like the apostles who had locked themselves up for fear of the Jews, we too are capable of imprisoning ourselves in our own anxieties. We fret and worry about the future, about our sufferings or our disappointments, and too often let these concerns stifle the true peace that Jesus offers us. But the Church today urges us to rejoice and to step out in faith like the apostles who left their fears behind them. Peace not only alleviates our fears, it also frees us to live our faith to the fullest, to have the courage to take risks, and to leave our comfort zone for the sake of the Gospel. This is what we are called and, not only that, empowered to do. Anything less is a kind of spiritual poverty we bring upon ourselves. God has given us the gift of himself, present and available in every moment, every place, and every situation. May we recognize this most wonderful gift and give thanks with grateful hearts. Cycles of Faith YOU HAVEN T MISSED IT! The Altar Society s Sale is TODAY! Stop by and do some shopping after Mass! Congratulations to St. Didacus School s 8th Grade Graduating Class! This month s lunch is a potluck provided by the members whose last names begin with the letters M-Z. Father s Day Novena of Masses June 9th-17th Thank You Religious Education Teachers! Our parish community is blessed by so many loving, dedicated teachers. They give their time, talent and treasure each Wednesday throughout the school year to ensure that our children learn to love and serve God. We are grateful for their service to our parish. Kid s Corner Remember your father or the men who have filled a fatherly role in your life at our Father s Day Novena of Masses. We will pray for these men each day at Mass for nine days. Envelopes for this Novena are available at the entrance of the Church. You can return them in the collection basket or to the Parish Office by Thursday, June 8th. Pentecost is more than celebrating the birthday of the Church it celebrates our birth into risen Life and being sent forth armed with peace to forgive others. We can speak of a birthday of the Church (the Church being the Body of Christ) only when we make the Church a reality through forgiveness of one another. Then every day is a birthday - a birthing of the risen Life of Christ in each other. Forgiveness is the Church s CPR. Forgiveness is sometimes the most difficult thing we do; so many simple acts in our everyday living demand that we seek and give forgiveness. This is why Jesus sent the Spirit: to empower us, through the common risen Life we share, to forgive, to heal divisions in the community, to be peacemakers. We overcome our fears and unlock the doors of our closed relationships when we reach out to others in forgiveness. Living Liturgy Congratulations to Msgr. Robert Ecker Father Bob on the 66th Anniversary of his Ordination to the Priesthood on June 9th! Our parish is blessed by Fr. Bob s faithful service as our regular Monday Mass celebrant and by his many other generous ways. Thank you, Fr. Bob!
